C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Peter Case

Peter Case, who you might remember as the guy from The Nerves and The Plimsouls, has his 10th solo album coming out tomorrow (Tuesday), Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John. Yesterday's L.A. Times gave it a rave review and kept comparing him to Woody Guthrie. What more could any serious singer songwriter want? When his producer, Ian Brennan, played it for the CLLN Music Club staff last week, we asked for a YouTube clip. Peter did us one better and did a short film for us on Pico Blvd, after hours. It includes 3 of his new songs: “Ain’t Gonna Worry No More,” "Every 24 Hours," and "Getaway Blues."

Is there a clip, or is my pc f*cked up again?

YouTube is having a temporary melt down.

Funny you should mention not worrying anymore... I've been listening to Braddah Iz all day in my attempt to stop worrying just for a few minutes.

Yes, Nicole. It's here.

It would be sweet if you could get them to upload real vids of Zero Hour and Million Miles Away, Howie Klein. I hate the cell phone versions on you tube...

I cant see it...hear it...darn..I will come back later....now I am intrigued anyone that is channeling Woody is worth the wait....

Woody Guthrie? No, more like a cross between Dave Van Ronk and "Weird Al" Yankovic

Well, my cousin wrote (or co-wrote) a song called the 'Pico Shuffle', about the same street. I think it was one of the first things he wrote when he moved to LA so long ago.

Hey Peter, that's quite a friendly gesture! Special thanX from the "Early Late Night Wake Up Club" (tm)!!!!

LOL! That is me, gaping at the map and looking up aghast, looking back at the map, almost running into something, checking the map again... throwing my hands up and taking whatever freeway has a number on it I'm certain will get me out of that dread city!

Domo's picture

that's dangerously close to perfection....

yeah, damn right. I always wondered what the guitar was for, man. Brilliant, wondrous. I'm in love with the flow of my blood again.

This city has gone down the drain since I grew up!

I thought the Lebrea Tar Pits reference was cute ... from oil becomes oil waste becomes oil ...

I'm listening to Braddah Iz so much today because I keep worrying about this:

...California Uber Alles?

So you see why I'm trying to stick to the sweet Hawaiian dude....

I assume the title is a reference to Sleepy John Estes:

Kind of reminds me of Tom Morello, the guitarist for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, who does acoustic political music as "The Nightwatchman."

Thanks, lafin. For Clapton it was pretty good. But I think the Hawaiian blows even Judy Garland out of the water. Maybe it's because there's no way to associate him with the ugliness of the world... or maybe just because he captures the song's (songs') truest meaning(s) -- maybe truer than even the writer/s had in mind -- in his rendition somehow. I love it so much because there isn't a jaded split second in it... not a tone that goes off the fundamentally real. (Not to be a "Zen fascist" about it or nuthin'.) It's part of what has me SO upset: IT'S A BEAUTIFUL WORLD! Look what we're doing to it. :-(

99, I totally agree. IMHO that rendition is the best. Also, that song reaches into the human heart no matter who sings it.

Loved the Plimsouls in the 80s (before I ever moved cross country to LA) and now love Peter Case as he winds through middle age on his guitar. Sort of our West Coast Paul Westerberg. Time for a McCabe show, Peter!

Oh, good, sphinx. I like it when someone agrees with me! It's so, so... agreeable.... I don't know about you guys, but I find myself tearing up at least once an hour lately. Things are so deplorable for so many and it's almost completely us doing it to them, and too few seem to be ready to do something about that... a few more willing to gripe our fool heads off about it... but it's not stopping. It's not slowing. It gets so much worse with each passing day. Maybe that's part of it: people so appalled for so long that they've forgotten even to cry about it. So I get in these little music grooves....

Thank you for the introduction to Braddah Iz. The merged pieces are starkly rich and hauntingly of life. minimalist beauty. thank you.

Were you aware of this YouTube memorial tribute? There lacks the handsome mounting site, as of the one you posted, and it's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," alone. You might, however, find the conclusion cathartic, and that is not such a bad thing. I did, and thanks to you, I've only just learned of this soul full man.

Apologies! Apologies! The comments were not visible. I am VERY sorry for all the duplication. I'm sorry.

Are you talking about this one, Horst? It's the medley too, but it is a much better video.

I decided to post the other one because the sound is better, but this one is beautiful too.

He was a resistance leader! Now I want to marry him! Even if he's dead.

Plimsouls - One of my all time favorite bands!

I must have seen them 50 times - 20 times at Wong's Chinatown alone.

I was even at their farewell show at the Whiskey - with special guest, Tom Petty.

Peter, if you're reading this - keep playing and writing such beautiful songs.

And Howie...

When are you gonna do a CLLN with Johnette Napolitano/Concrete Blonde?

Still In Hollywood

Ahh, the inimitable Peter Case. Have loved his singing and songwriting for many years. "...Blue Guitar" is still a classic album. Thanks Howie.

So you're back on the streets

Peter Case is one of the most unappreciated singer/songwriters out there. Grab a copy of The Man With Blue PostModern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar or Full Service No Waiting right after you finish reading these comments, and you'll wind up buying his entire catalog. He's also a great guy who always takes the time to talk to a fan, even those with large piles of stuff to sign. Many thanks to the good folks at Crooks and Liars for remembering that feeding the soul is as important as feeding the head.

Peter Case's blog is great too...it's not "just" a music blog, it's more like a salon - think Paris in the twenties. Lots of raging political and philosophical discussions, and sneak peeks of his works in progress. Peter is also an author.

Hi Sphinx!

Terrible's picture

Thanks for the video Peter! YOU ROCK!

i saw Peter Case with a friend open for Huker Du in Minneapolis in the late 80s and it was fantastic. Peter has been a favorite of mine ever since! He's personal, soulful, bluesy, but still carries a message. Woody Guthrie seems an apt comparison! Thanks John! I'll be picking up his CD soon!

My Five-star Peter Case:
Breakin' the Chain: Addiction(Cigs in this case) a great metaphor and an addictive hard-driving song.
Workin' for the Enemy: Story Blues...
"You don't know it, but its plain to see
you can't tell it
but your working for the enemy."
Turnin' Blue: Just a beautiful story song
satellite Beach: Beautiful
Moves Me Deeply: Almost a whisper
More than Curious
Echo Wars
Poor Ol Tom
Two Angels
Underneath the Stars(Find it here...)
Beyond the Blues...
And that's not the Plimsouls, etc...

Peter, You gotta play the Twin Cities again... One of the top concerts I have ever been to. I don' think you were directly responsible but a good friend of mine proposed to his wife the night of your concert in the 80s(with me in the backseat of his car....awkward ;->). A magical concert.

you just gotta love Peter Case. simply amazing.
