C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Mana

noriega_afghanistan.jpg Last week I interviewed progressive Texas Rep. Rick Noriega. He's running for the U.S. Seante against the absolute worst, rubber-stampingest and most reactionary senator from anywhere, John Cornyn. Tomorrow, Jane and I will be hosting Rick over at FDL at 11am, PT (1 pm in Texas). Come over and meet him; he's really an extraordinary guy-- one of the most outstanding political figures I've ever met in my life.

As a kind of cultural touchstone, John and I asked him to host tonight's CLLN Music Club. He and I immediately bonded because of our shared affinity for Clapton's "Change the World," which I was busy releasing on my label, Reprise, while he was listening to as he was getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan. Other songs that Rick considered for tonight were "Let It Be' by the Beatles, "Imagine" by John Lennon, Sting's "Alien in New York" ( "I used this all the time for my background music for my presentations to groups when dealing with immigration," he told us.) He works out to "Everything Is Coming My Way" by Santana and a special love song for his wife, "Yellow Rose of Texas." But tonight's featured song is "Justicia, Tierra y Libertad" by Mana, a song Rick and two of his legislative colleagues, Joe E. Moreno and Jessica Farrar, used to always listen to while driving from Houston to Austin to try to deal with Tom DeLay's shenanigans around the Texas redistricting session.

"While I was in Afghanistan Joe died in an auto accident. I was like losing a best friend and a brother but I was in a combat zone and couldn't get back to bury him. This was the song we shared."

Thank you Mr Noreage, I have been writing for months about Texas not having any representation from either Senator. The one your running against has told me via his staff he Votes WHAT HE IS TOLD to vote and he votes ONLY the party line.

The Ding Bat in San Antonio Texas has Never answered her phone either in Washington or in Texas and as fopr a email I have Never EVER received a acknowledement of their haveing received one.

I told this Piece of Garbage Cornyn two yesra ago to start looking for another job now Please make it a reality.

Great.
Terrific.
Awesome.
Not as good as Salieri, but someone who might have met a friend of one of Mozart's descendants would have been blown away!
Gosh darn, we've come a long way!

That song hit the spot. Thanks.

Could it be that the revolution will not be televised, but you can find it on Youtube?

And, perhaps, the troubles of the common people are global in their impact?

What a profoundly beautiful song. Check out the translated lyrics here http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.letrascan...

John Cornyn may be the emptiest suit, phoniest member of the whole empty suit, phony GOP-Chickenhawk party.

Texas voters need to cut through the BS and elect someone worthy enough to represent the Lone Star State.

Good choice. Best of luck to you in your race against Cornyn, Rep. Noriega.

I can't think of anything the Senior Senator in Texas hasn't rubber stamped either. Cornyn's just following her upskirts. ;-) YUCK!!!!

You got my vote Mr. Noriega.

Let me see if I can recreate this (I lost my parody songs in a disc crash) ....

All The Smell Things - Stan and the Sequencers
parody of All The Small Things by blink 182

All the, smell kinks
Lose care, foos bring
I'll take, one hit
Your smoke, best trip

Always, I know
You'll blow, at my show
Snorting, shooting
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooollllllllllllliiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnn', scoobies

Say it ain't blow
I don't do coke
Turn the keg off
I want some smoke

Later, evening
DORKs suck, they blow
Fat left a bottle on the bar
Drank it 'till it was done

Say it ain't blow
I don't do coke
Turn the keg off
I want some smoke

Say it ain't blow
I don't do coke
Turn the keg off
I want some smoke

Keep the pipe still
Or it will spill
Pass the bowl on
And I will refill

Say it ain't blow
I don't do coke
Turn the keg off
I want some smoke

Keep the pipe still
Or it will spill
Pass the bowl on
Pass the bowl on
And I will refill

But you know if we don't fight the terrorists in Iraq that they will follow us here. That's what Bush has been saying. All part of the White House's propaganda machine. They know it works because they did it before the Invasion of Iraq and it worked. We have to start calling Fox News Fox Propaganda. Bush's poll numbers have gone up since he started linking Iraq to Al Queda again.

Fine. So since we're in Iraq so we don't have to fight them here, then we can get rid of the Patriot Act. And any other legislation that we've (like recently passed) to allow spying on US citizens.

Great choice; good luck.

btw, it's "Englishman in New York", not alien (in the title)

And if you like the pogues version of "and the band played waltzing matilda" try the original version by Eric Bogle (who wrote it). Also, there's "I was only 19" (original version by Redgum and recent cover by The Herd.

Rick Noriega is the real deal. I had the pleasure of working with him on Jessica Farrar's re-election.He is a person you can talk to and you know he hears you,I have spoken with a lot of politicians here in Texas and that is a rare commodity.I hope the people of Texas realize the asset we have and vote Rick in.

Wacko in Waco's picture

I will work very hard to spread the message about Rick Noriega. The 2 Senators we have now are just about the worst that can be imagined. Texas was once a proud Democratic state with progressive leaders but has suffered under too many years of Republican dictatorship. The time is right to elect Rick Noriega to the US Senate!

i saw maná at radio city early in their career
always thought they were too derivate of many other pop acts
especially the police (given the singer's voice)

but this is good stuff.
they're definitely getting better.

still say café tacuba is the best mex group.

Stevie Winwood really (really, really, really) is a genius. A great singer and songwriter, piano/organ player, and a great guitar player too. Traffic was a great band. Check out Stevie singing/playing guitar on Mr Fantasy (YouTube).
