Late Night Music Club with Paolo Nutini

....but he's just a boy! My favorite song from this year, however. The boy's got a set of pipes, and this one, well...

He is just a boy. Who's going to keep Mark Foley at bay?

He's good, but he's got nothin' on this guy.

I agree with you. Good not great. I've seen just as good on third rounds of American Idol (yes I watch American Idol, my guilty pleasure).

I think Paula, Randy and Simon all would have all put him through the first round but Simon would have defected on the second.

He's got nothin' on this guy, either- but no one ever has. Not even anyone from American Idol.

Effortlessly!

You guys are crazy. He's got a really good solid crisp talent. Very bluesy. Very good.

He also got a record contract and an extremely successful tour without being on %&^%*$*&$% American Idol.

Oh, he's good. But don't let yer moistened panties cloud yer judgement.

;)

Yeah, I said it! :D

Bright Eyes is the singer for this generation.

He's got nothing on Cat Stevens. Or Otis Redding. Or Joe Williams. How many of them were 19 when they recorded these samples you guys posted?

The kids a very good talent. Hopefully he'll mature into a greater one.

Jacob Dylan, like father like son.

Whoa!! LH&R rulez! I think this one predates any record I ever owned of them. Many thanks for the link, Andy K

No comments about silly love songs and such. But, since the guitarist is wearing a DK shirt:

It's nothin'! I'm always on the lookout fer L,H&R at YouTube & DailyMotion. Fer the longest time all ya could find was "Avenue C" on a fan vid/travelogue of downtown Manhattan. More's always croppin' up. I'll share as I find it. :)

As an old white guy he has nothing on the above mentioned because every one of them created their own sound just like this person. I like what I heard and the best of luck against the machine that NY talks about in Get a song writer and a cheese burger because we have a Hit.

Not to mention Janet Weiss (ex-SK) on drums... w00t!

I love it when I see new young talent come out and debut.
I hope this excellent young group doesn't sell out to the mainstream record companies.
If they have the patience to build their own reputation without letting a rubber stamp record company package and sell them like a product, they have a chance to be as rich as the Rolling Stones... and that's no chump change.

I hate the record companies. They ate America's youthful talent and bastardized it with baby tits and sold it back with kool aid spilled all over it, making it unpalatable. They killed a generation of sound. There has been nothing since. I am glad to see today's artists steering clear of them... and YES I BUY THEIR CDs and support all young talent.

All us oldies who loved our rock and roll should do that and support the youth so they can sing real music and not be killed off by the recording industry.

Life's too short to listen to men sing.

Women's voices always make me feel so much more elated.

He needs coaching. He needs a band. Look out Mick. (Surfed around to a few of his vids and I note the teenyboppers of today are too cool to scream and squeek and faint.}

I wish somebod could tell me what is up with this monster nasalization, sort of tuneful whine, that EVERYBODY is using for a "singing" voice nowadays. I mean, I like some of it, but this is getting ridiculous.

Pipes? I gotz yer pipes!

Yeah, that cross between monster nasal and baby-talk thing seems to be called "singing" nowadays. All kids, young men and young women, are doing it, even when you can tell they have great voices. What is up with that?

Oh, well... nobody bother trying to answer my question. I'm on this going to bed at night and getting up in the morning kick, so I won't be around to hear it. It's just a fad, I'm sure. Nighty night all.

He's from my home town! Paisley, in Scotland - very close to Glasgow Airport, the attacks on which posted my first comments on this blog.

He's got such a soulful voice and style for one so young, I'm really impressed by him...plus it's nice when your favourite blog run from SF shows a kid from your home town from thousands of miles away ;o)

Good stuff, nice one Paulo

Yes! I love Nutini!

My favorite and his first big hit was this tho... and it is a blast:

Paolo Nutini - Jenny Don't Be Hasty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogepRpymMT4

Paolo Nutini does not sing that well.
But then it is not how well you sing, but the songs that you sing.
Some of the greatest musicians could not sing very well. Dylan et al.

But in times like these where a singers behind or irrelevant stuff like that counts more then the songs, people like Dylan will never make it again.

If your a blond bimbo (no disrespect) that can moan and jodel like some mountain goat in heat, music labels are bashing down your doors to get you to sing for them.

Nutini can thank his looks more then his voice.
Honestly, if he looked like Dylan he would have never had gotten a chance.

bleh

Another pretty-boy flavor of the month with a passable voice and looks to make the ladies (and the gents who go that way) cream their drawers. Really part of the ongoing corporate conspiracy to make the 98% of the population that isn't cute like this kid hate themselves and buy more body-image-enhancing products, whilst simultaneously furthering the homogeno-stupefaction of our once-proudly-innovative culture.

Why can you put this crap up and it's years already and you haven't put up King Crimson, perhaps the most influential rock band on other players outside of the Beatles? I mean, Fripp's only been at the cutting edge of Music for almost 40 years, unlike the 40 minutes this kid is gonna be famous for. Shame on you, you're supposed to be a musician, John.

Paolo was 16 when he got discovered, 18 when he cut his first album. He writes his own songs, and this guy can do cover songs from any artists and makes them his own. Heck, he even sounds better than the original. Here's a few samples.

Gnarls Barkley Crazy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fCDkk79ek0&mode=related&search=

He has talent unfortunately the song really sucks hard. Then again there are thousands, literally thousands, of very talented singers, songwriters, and performers who just fall under the radar because they don't fit the mold of corporate ideals.

Great song and esp. nice to hear a bit of his Scottish accent coming through.

And will agree, he is (very) lovely to behold.

re Voice Fads: Reminds me of the Mariah Carey sound -- I'm so sick of hearing the copycats, esp. as evidenced on American Idol, right down to the hand gestures. Gak.

Stunning! Thank you for this.

Those kids are pretty good. My daughter likes the way his voice characteristics change during the song.

Just saw Slow-Children live in So. Or. They quit school in their Jr. year, moved to Vegas, and have been playing together for 10 years...apparently, they're now the most requested band in LV. Four guys, and the sound that came out of them live was amazing. The songs on their myspace page are from their latest album, Smoke the Evidence...and I did buy the cd before they were done with their third song.

If that dosen't move you check your pulse.

His song "New Shoes" is so catchy. I find myself singing the chorus. And he is a young cutie, that doesn't hurt.

he has the makings of a good singer, but he does need some coaching. he tends to sing to his shoes and needs some stage present. and his cute little face and accent don't hurt one bit. his first album is not bad; he could really mature into quite an artist. i'm drawn in by his gravelly yet honey smooth voice.

He's got his own appealling authentic sound and doesn't require anything more. (imho)

Damn, listen to all these old farts moan about the good old days!
I'm 45, and never heard the song before, so I'm not sure how it'll stand up to repeated listening, but he's got good range, and can sing both sweetly (a la Paul McCartney, but better) and with a harder edge (a la John Lennon, but better).

Agree with #43, he's got his own thing going on. Fuck coaching, not everyone has to be a cookie-cutter "performer". The Grateful Dead had no between-song banter, no dance steps or guitar-smashing, and they were the biggest selling concerts in the world for about 20 years.

People! People! People! I am 67 years old (woman) and I first saw this young man sing at the Live Earth concert. I was so enthralled with his performance I started investigating via internet and found out who he is. He's from Scotland and had his first album come out at age 19. I love music, all kinds. Not jazz, opera, and not much country, but most other music. I've been finding new groups from my son and grandsons and the internet. Anyhow Paulo is an excellent singer (his voice is so good) and his songs written by him are very good. I think my favorite is "Last Request", but "Autumn" (a tribute to his grandfather) is great. "Jenny Don't Be Hasty" is great too. In fact, I like all the songs on his album. As for the "singning to his shoes", I think it's probably some shyness to his immediate fame, or a part of his singing process. When he does look up it is a really powerful moment. I'm so glad to see him on Crooks&Liars. He's really big in Europe and I've noticed that most of his concerts here in America coming up in September are sold out.

Oh. My.

Another old woman chiming in with great praise for this kid: Great voice, great style, great song beautifully tinged with the Scottish accent!

For godsakes quit comparing him to your all-time favorite singer and just listen to those pipes! So what if he's just a kid? Good grief. This is exceptional, soulful-beyond-his-years talent.

He's not that great and is much loathed amongst the younger set in US high schools. He's perceived as a pretty boy artist with a great look/sound but little to no artistic talent. Your crush on him is appreciated but give the rest of us a break !

I cannot understand anyone who believes that their opinion is the final authority on this young man's talent. I would think the fact that he can indeed sing is enough to temper the criticism of those who claim others think he is a "pretty boy" among the highschool set. Who cares?! He can sing and has apparently written some of his own music. That's real artistic talent, despite these phantom highschool naysayers.

Some people like him and others do not... there is no reason to argue with those who do like his style.
