Late Night Music Club with Tom Petty

(Blogged by Howie Klein) Tomorrow's Blue America congressional candidate is Dan Maffei from an upstate New York district that encompasses all of Syracuse and goes right into the suburbs of Rochester. You can find out about all the political aspects of Dan's race against rubber stamp stamp Republican incumbent James Walsh tomorrow at Firedoglake at 2pm (EDT). Tonight has nothing to do with politics per se. I asked Dan why he's using Tom Petty's song "I Won't Back Down" as his campaign theme song. Dan is a big Petty fan and he loved "Free Fallin'" when he was in college but the choice of "I Won't Back Down" wasn't just about his own personal battle for this congressional seat.

Dan is like a walking advertisement for the beauty and liveability of his area of the country, an area hit hard by bad economic policies that have depopulated once thriving communities as "Free Trade" extremists like Bush gave tax breaks to American companies for exporting union jobs to China and other slave-labor countries. Progressives in areas all over America in small cities and towns that have been economically devastated by terrible policies and agendas of greed and selfishness are fighting back and they really and truly will not back down.

Sweet...

Couldn't have picked out a better call to arms standard....

Best of luck Dan Maffei....

Good pick!

Man... I wish I had a bank of amplifiers the size of the Great Wall of China to blast this song to the millions of go-along-to-get-alongs who are not stopping these scum.

I forgot, play this game whilst you listen to that Camel song I posted above -

Every democratic congressman and senator needs to listen to that song and take it to heart. It is shameful that they still let proven liars tell them what to do, and they give the crooks the benefit of a doubt when they have proven they don't deserve it. Not all, but some of our reps just don't have a pair.
By the same token, we should take that song to heart also, and those that do not represent our progressive values, repug or dem, be up in their ass like a jalapeno suppository.

I'm listening to Won't Back Down now, the game works pretty good with that too!!!!

Tom Petty completely kicks ass. My favorite song is "Love is Long Road", although "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Listen to Her Heart" are right up there...

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Theme

Posh!

Hushabye Mountain

Campaign theme songs. Hmmm.

Karl, we used to cover Petty's Listen To Her Heart in my old band ('Nobody's Business'). It's a *FUN* tune to play!

Hmm, Association doing their act they did on the Smoes Broes but apparently in a different live situation -

Excellent 2 posts there, but did I miss Dick Van Dyke dyin' or somethin'? Loves me the Julie Andrews, but Dick wasn't any good as a children's star, imo. That horrible accent was so disingenuous. He peaked early with The Dick Van Dyke Show, and you can give the supportin' cast much of the credit.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has always creeped me out in its sterile clammy hands, that freakish Child Catcher guy...Both Broccoli and Fleming shoulda stayed outta that genre.

But the music in both films is strong, that's why I dig yer posts...Just sayin'...

So, seriously, does anyone want to discuss how weird it is for politicians to have theme songs? What are we buying into here? If it's a good thing, here's a song I've posted before:

You do know that the "White Limbaugh" (tm) has a theme song, of course. His is especially relevent, he uses The Pretenders. :-)

Let's tear it up!

...The Johnny Cash version has more soul...

Julie Andrews, My Fair Lady

Wouldn't It Be Loverly?

The story goes that on opening night, the first number of the show left the audience rather indifferent. The producers nipped across the street to the bar for a quick belt, fearing it would be a long evening. They got back just as the show was coming to a screeching halt after Loverly brought the crowd to its feet demanding a curtain call from Ms. Andrews.

Just nostalgia. What a pity the video for Hushabye Mountain is truncated.

Isn't this the same Tom Petty who played at the bat mitzvah of a war profiteer's daughter?

No TN is not to my liking.....just trying to keep a common link through the thread......and I'm not really a fan of the Wilburys either....but I do think that all those guys together at one time is special.
