C&L's Late Night Music Club With Bo Diddley

I'm A Man

This is C&L's 500th music post! Give a listen to our past music selections and enjoy...

Get well soon, Bo:

Bo Diddley suffered a heart attack during a medical check-up in a Florida hospital and is now in stable condition, his spokeswoman said today (August 28).

The 78-year-old rock pioneer felt ill during his checkup at North Florida Regional Medical Center, and was transferred to the emergency room where the heart attack occurred.

He then underwent a surgical procedure to help the blood flow to his heart, reports Reuters.

I saw Bo Diddley perform at a "festival" in the Sierra foothills in the early 70s (hey, don't ask for details, it was the 70s!). Erm, something something Amador County. I remember riding up to the festival in a (ooops, stereotype!) VW van with no heat and the vent stuck open so that we were all blasted with cold air the whole drive. Bo Diddley did, well, he did Bo Diddley in that bump ba bump ba bump classic, with the V-guitar and all the lyrics were "Bo diddley Bo diddley Bo diddley bump ba bump ba bump" . . . and, being the professional that he was, he was the least stoned performer that weekend and it was, quite honestly, an incredible thrill to see him perform.

I wish him well, and hope he gets past this bump ba bump in the road.

Makin' me homesick Bo.

in 1969, Bo was the manager of the band I was in.
I played bass at the time and we used to rehearse in his garage in Granada Hills, Ca.
I haven't seem him since and I'm sorry to hear about his condition.

Mudshark,
Great link to the Jeff Beck. I saw Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan in Sacramento late '89 early '90. Stevie Ray actually opened for Jeff Beck that night, but I heard they alternated for different tour dates.

On the flip side of Humble Pie

Buddy Guy and the future of blues. Even if you're not into Chicago blues you gotta see this kid (8 years old).

Get well Bo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wniGFm_jgRI I'm afraid of Americans......Bowie........last one...gn folks

hey fiver...looks like we have something to look forward too....thanks for that.....I'll keep my eyes and ears open for the kid...........he definitely has got talent......gn all

Best wishes to Bo Diddley and he OWNS that song . . . although the Brits like The Yardbirds and Keith Relf did a GREAT uptempo version of it that I can NEVER shake off . . . The Bo Knows, Though!

Wait. The cat who said he played bass and Bo managed.
How did that happen?
You had to be intimidated.
Were it not for Bo Diddley and Berry, modern rock would have never happened.
It would have been pre-Army Elvis, Frankie Avalon, and Bobby Rydel.
The CIA would have offed Brian Wilson even before Surfer Girl.

Excuse me.
I ment to say it would have been post-Army Elvis.

Well ... I suppose if you're going to have a heart attack, he did it in the smartest place.

Incidents like these must be laughable within other elite-leadership circles and conversations around the globe.

Maybe when American politicians travel the world to negotiate treaties and to converse with other worldly leaders, they should all take a Portable-Potty with them.

Everytime I hear news concerning American leaders trippin' around the globe, I will always picture them negotiating from within a Portable-Potty.

Calm

Bless you Bo. Get well soon.

Question(s) for any musical geniuses (geni ..?) out there:

1. Two songs that sound live -- "Bennie and the Jets" (Elton John) and "I Want You to Want Me" (Cheap Trick)... they aren't REALLY live, are they? Are there any versions that sound studio-ish?

2. In the lead guitar part of "Fool in the Rain" (Led Zeppelin), what effect is Jimmy Page using? My friend and I had an argument many years back about this. He said it was/is a guitar synth and I say it's an octaver (a device which splits the signal into different octaves).

Anyone on either or both?

Gratze!

"I Want You To Want Me" is live, Bennie & The Jets isn't.
As for what Page is using, no idea.

After Wiki-ing it, I found that "I Want You to Want Me" "...is a song by Cheap Trick, originally recorded in 1977 for their album In Color, though the version from the band's 1978 album At Budokan subsequently became better known than the original."

I listened to a clip from the original (off In Color) and it SUCKS!! No wonder the live version became better known!

Also from Wiki:

"After recording the song in the studio, John and the band worried that it was too plain and unoriginal. According to guitarist Davey Johnstone, "'Bennie and the Jets' was one of the oddest songs we ever recorded. We just sat back and said, 'This is really odd'." The song was sent to producer Gus Dudgeon, who added the "live" sound to the track. Dudgeon added applause and audience sounds from John's previous concerts, plus whistles and a hand clap on the off beats. According to Dudgeon, "English audiences always clap on the off beat, they're always on when they're supposed to be off, which drives me crazy."

The use of live sounds has the effect of using the audience itself as a musical instrument."

And you know that everything in Wiki is true. :-)

And, wouldn't you know it...

"Page uses an MXR Blue Box effect pedal during the solo to produce the octave sound."

Why didn't I Wiki it to begin with?!?!?

if you must have a heart attack, I'd say that's the place to do it...

Theres actually a pre-In Color version of I Want You To Want Me on Cheap Trick's Box Set. Much heavier and more like the live version or should I say the live version is more like it. In other words blame In Color's producer!
