Late Night Music Club with Luciano Pavarotti

Pavarotti, as part of his "Pavarotti and friends" series, sang with everyone from Bono to Barry White. Since we've already done the honorable thing and posted Nessun Dorma, let's show him at his happiest, singing "Viva Forever" with The Spice Girls in 1998. It's not as bad as I expected it to be, and the guy looks genuinely happy:

Sorry, couldn't finish it. It's WORSE than I thought it would be. It's like he's backing them up, when it should be the opposite.

talk about odd pairings. he looks TOO happy. this couldn't be 1989 though, Spice Girls weren't around then.

Ooh thanks for the catch. 1998. Fixed. Thanks again. - BG

He's more concerned about us now then we are of him.

From a metaphysical perspective.

He lived large. It was beautiful.

RIP.

Oh, who cares about art (for a mo'). The guy was having fun.

To Luciano (raises glass)

What? Did he die or something?

Yesterday. - BG

A friend of mine long ago when Pavarotti ruled and Reagan reigned, remarked that the Gipper was so out of touch he though that poverty was an Italian tenor.

skippy's late nite music club has not only has luciano w/the spice girls, we've got mr. pavarotti livin' large w/barry white & bono (as mentioned in your post) as well as james brown, mariah and meatloaf.

pavarotti was a great voice and a great believer in music, all kinds of music. he leaves a large void to be filled, in more ways than one.

Yeah Skippy I thought Pavarotti and Meatloaf was too much of a good thing, even for LNMC. - BG

That was atrocious! Pav was great, as usual, but I had forgotten how horrible the spice girls were.

Greg @ 6:

No he escaped. We're still here. Uggh

'Viva Forever' is apt. It sure felt like forever to me.

Them spice ladies can't sing for dogshit. Ouch.

L.A.,
"No he escaped. We’re still here. Uggh"

Ha!
Barry White, Bryan Adams, Meat Loaf, Alex Britti, Joe Cocker, Jovanotti, James Brown, Michael Bolton, Dolores O'Riordan, & Elton John all appearing with the master of voice...

His generosity is certainly as vivid to me as his big smile and amazing range.

When my first son was born, he was colicky. And I don't mean, oh the poor thing, he's just colicky. I mean, oh my God, why does he sound like someone put him in a blender, colicky. I even had a pediatrician specializing in colic, turn to me after observing him for a few minutes and ask "Is he always like this?" Yes, he was always like that. When he wasn't attached to my boob, he would screech until he collapsed from exhaustion. And one morning about 1AM we were driving him around the neighborhood, trying to get him to sleep, when Pavarotti came on the radio...silence, blissful silence. I love Pavarotti, he saved my young son's life.

It was lovely seeing Pavarotti so happy.

Pancreatic cancer is the worst.
I've seen it close up, and I am sorry for all his pain.

Now he can teach the angels how to make beautiful music.

Strawberry,
I love Pavarotti, he saved my young son’s life.

A story worth retelling my friend. If the US would or could figure this out we'd pipe his voice everywhere and begin to heal.

I implore you: Run naked in the sprinklers while there is still time...

Thanx for the link. I've already sent a few of these around. My favorite was the duet with Joe Cocker - short but sweet.

Ow! Watch your step. That wasn't a garden hose. Darn tourists.

Umm - I appreciate his smile, but this is not how I want to remember Pavarotti.

He wanted to bring opera to the masses, with all his pairings, I think he did just that.

I can remember the first time I saw/heard him, Richard Thomas had brought him with him for an appearance on "The Tonight Show" hosted by Johnny Carson. 1979

If my memory is correct he came with Richard Thomas (John Boy Walton) ..

Richard was a scheduled guest on the Tonight Show that night, but he really wanted to introduce this man, this voice, to the American public. This was so unplanned that I don't think Johnny was even aware of what was going to happen.

Moments after Richard was introduced he introduced Pavarotti, the curtain opened and he was standing by a piano. Then he sang and I became a fan.

This is how I remember it. I may be wrong, but I hope not.

...let’s show him at his happiest, singing “Viva Forever” with The Spice Girls in 1989.

I think you mean 1999. According to Wikipedia, "The Spice Girls are an English all-female pop group, which formed in London in 1994."

Missed the correction browsing through the comments, nevermind.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but it seems appropriate to link to this beautiful and profound song again. It's Luciano Pavarotti and Zucchero at the first 'Pavarotti and Friends' concert, singing "Miserere."

Here is the translation of the Italian lyrics. (Andrea Bocelli also did a version of this song with Bono, that some o fyou may have heard. Bono rewrote the lyrics, but this is the original).

"Miserere, miserere,
miserere, miserable me,
but I toast life!

But what a mystery my life is,
what a mystery!
I am a sinner from the year
eighty thousand,
a liar!
But where am I and what am I doing,
how do I live?
I live in the soul of the world
lost in the depths of life!

Miserere, miserable me,
but I toast life!

I am the saint who betrayed you
when you were alone.
I live elsewhere and observe the world
from the sky
and I see the sea and the forests,
I see myself…
I live in the soul of the world
lost in the depths of life!

Miserere, miserable me,
but I toast life!

If there is a night dark enough
to hide me, hide me,
if there is a light, a hope,
magnificent sun that shines inside me,
give me the joy to live
that is not yet there.
Miserere, miserere,
that joy to live
that perhaps
is not yet there."

One more, from the same concert. A duet between Pavarotti and another Italian Singer: Lucio Dalla. This is Dalla's song, "Caruso."

Once again, here's a translation of the lyrics:

"Here, where the sea shines
and the wind howls,
on the old terrace beside the gulf of Sorrento,
a man embraces a girl
he wept after,
then clears his throat and continues the song:

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know;
it is a chain by now
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know…

He saw the lights out on the sea,
thought of the nights there in America,
but they were only the fishermen’s lamps
and the white wash astern.
He felt the pain in the music
and stood up from the piano,
but when he saw the moon emerging from a cloud
death also seemed sweeter to him.
He looked the girl in the eyes,
those eyes as green as the sea.
Then suddenly a tear fell
and he believed he was drowning.

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,
it is a chain by now
that melts the blood inside the vein you know…

The power of opera,
where every drama is a hoax;
with a little make-up and with mime
you can become someone else.
But two eyes that look at you,
so close and real,
make you forget the words,
confuse your thoughts,

So everything became small,
also the nights there in America.
You turn and see your life
through the white wash astern.

But, yes, it is life that ends
and he did not think so much about it
on the contrary, he already felt happy
and continued his song:

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,
it is a chain by now
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know…

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,
it is a chain by now
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know…"

Okay so this isn't Luciano's best piece. But I like it because it shows the world clearly that he was NEVER a snob.
I was one of the lucky people on the planet that actually got to meet him and spend a little time in his company.
It was at an afternoon gathering at a private home in Beverly Hills, California where a group of talented musicians from the local area gathered for a little friendly chamber music. The food on the table and the wine was PAR EXCELLENCE!!!

Luciano did not entertain that afternoon, but rather sat in the audience alongside me and my friends in a group that totaled about 50 people counting the musicians. I believe the lovely woman he was with later became his wife. My sincerest condolence to her for her loss should she read this.

Luciano showed me how to wrap a piece of Brie cheese within a date to cover the sharp taste and after a couple of chews, wash it down with wine. It was delicious and so was his company. He was real. He was warm. He was friendly and big as a mountain. I honestly could feel the power coming from this man. I never forgot that afternoon and I have always cherished Luciano. He was a gift from heaven, whether you believe in the place or not. He was gregarious and generous; a man's man to the end. There wasn't a woman who could come near him that wouldn't take a second, third, fourth, (and more) look. He had that personal magnetism, that charisma that Bill Clinton has. I have seen him in person too. I know.

What can I say about his voice. It sends chills down my spine like few artists can. Not once in a while; but ALWAYS. His sound is so familiar I can pick it out any time any where. Whenever I have heard him sing; I stop whatever I am doing and take in the music. I can't do anything but stop and listen. I can't read, write, drive; I can't do ANYTHING until he stops. It is that stunning to me. I am in love with his voice; his art. He was a master. And that is no exaggeration.

I love him and will miss him always. This piece of music shows the playful, non stuffy aspect of his nature. Luciano was brilliant. He will stand in the annals of human history forever... a great artist... a great man.

Thanks for letting me share. I am very sad at his loss and have been crying since I heard last night. Maybe if I can talk about it I will call in Malloy and share my story.

Here's something similar to Pavarotti. Dedicated to the upcoming formal announcement of our permanent occupation of Iraq.

He indeed looks happy -- happier than the girls -- who're so busy being that fake-pouty-sexy, which is a LOT of work. Except for the black woman, who does look naturally sexy, not forced. (Spoken by a gal, yeah.) The girl second from right looks like she *really* hates the job.

Pavarotti is so cute when he starts bopping a little bit.

Grateful to you for giving us a glimpse of him in his "sharing" phase.

I read and I can 'hear' your story being told. Maybe I'm up too late, but I am happy for the depth of sensitivity you bring to your stories. So much of what we rail about makes us irate and borderline incoherent. But that story right now is like beautiful lace trimming as I look out through the window of life. Thank you Ma'am.

And yes, Pav is the BOMB. You should hear Enrico Caruso, if you haven't already.

I have a similar story, but it was Bon Jovi (Bad Medicine) that saved my daughter's life.

Funny how that works, eh?

If thats the worse of Pavarotti with the spice girl, then I want to see the rest of him. I didn't know he did music with pop stars. He is a living musical instrument.

Sad night - a giant amongst men and an amazing talent passed ...

Among his charities were a 1995 "Concert for Bosnia" that raised $8.5 million and other concerts that raised $3.3 million for refugees from Afghanistan and $1 million for refugees from Kosovo. The 2003 Pavarotti & Friends concerts in Modena were
dedicated to victims of Iraq war (SOS Iraq), specifically children, who were always Maestro's favorites, with children choirs participating in annual Modena, Italy, concerts.
It is not known at this point what will be the fate of the "War child" fund he established and sponsored generously.

Andrea Bocelli Zucchero Miserere
Piazza dei Cavalieri in Pisa.
Zucchero wrote this song especially for Pavarotti, but Luciano wanted to listen to the song already recorded. Therefore Zucchero asked an unknown lawyer (Bocelli) to record it for him. When Pavarotti heard the song he was very surprised and said " why do you need me. You have already found one to sing the song"

"After working for a year as a lawyer (Bocelli graduated as a Doctor of Law from the University of Pisa) he undertook singing lessons from Maestro Luciano Bettarini, taking up music full time. Bocelli has never stopped his vocal training, attending a master class with renowned tenor Franco Corelli in Torino.."

Back when I lived in "civilization", I had a nextdoor neighbor who would play heavy metal so loudly 24/7 that it shook my house. Finally, I threw my windows open, with my speakers aimed at his house, and turned Luciano loose on him... all the way up to eleven. His house went silent.

I wish I could turn this all the way up to eleven right now. :-(

I truly enjoyed the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live (Dec. 12, 1998) with host Alec Baldwin and Vanessa Williams. Sounds funny, but Pavarotti and Williams sang a duet of "Adeste Fideles," whatever that is. (Sorry, I'm more "Beavis & Butthead" than Pavarotti.) All I know is that the duet worked surprisingly well, and was quite beautiful.

SiteMonitor,

am trying to post, and although it seems to be going through, it's not appearing. "Refresh comments" brings: "No New Comments!" . Could you check your 'spam' collection ? I stopped coming to the site since almost any time I tried to post my post would be going to your spam dump - for some unknown reasons, as SiteMonitor(s) on duty stated. (They did fix the one-time situation, each time, fished out my post from the spam-bin, and had it posted. Why would this be happenning ? I don't see other people having this problem. Extra work and annoyance on both sides. Thanx in advance.

i'm not a big fan of "popularized" classical music, such as the "3 tenors" or various groups such as "Bond." I wouldn't buy one of their CDs unless, perhaps, it was being sold at a yard sale for $2. But Pavarotti does exemplify the best tradition of concert performing by his evident lack of ego when it concerned his "image." And it's interesting how many people who profess a liking for him and his singing just don't get it. As Peter Schickele used to say on his radio show (quoting The Duke), "If it sounds good, it is good." Refreshingly, in public at least Pavarotti never used musical preferences as a mechanism for snobbery. While we are reflecting on his passing, some people should reflect on how his attitude contrasts with theirs. Somehow, I don't think he would appreciate a eulogy leavened with sneers.

Thanks.

Really, some of you (well at least one person who's page I just visited) should consider using the youtube custom players like the ones in the right margin of my page. The one like I used for Pavarotti yesterday holds up to 48 clips if you think you need that many. To me it's easier than embedding four or five players down a page. Of course I reduced the size of the one in my margin. Just a suggestion.

There is much to dislike about Pavarotti, both personally and artistically, but when he had the right repertory and was really on, there was nobody better. Some of the most thrilling moments in classical music in the 20th century are due to him, and he helped bring a lot of people to opera.

Man, so many insults. A man has died and everyone wants to run around talking about how he got paired with people with no talent and who aren't attractive (the latter sounds like a personal thing to me). I guess him looking happy and creating music and all makes no difference when he's paired with music you don't like.

Listening to his wonderful voice simply makes me tear up.

RIP Pavarotti.

You are the best opera singer of all time.

I spent the whole morning on a post to my blog but here is something to consider

. . . in attempt to persuade Luciano Pavarotti to record the song [Miserere]. Zucchero recalled: "Andrea was just unbelievable! He had something not one of the other tenors possessed. He had soul." When Pavarotti received the demo, he was extremely impressed with Andrea's voice, "Zucchero!, Who is this guy?" Pavarotti demanded. "Thank You for writing such a wonderful song. Yet you do not need me to sing it - Let Andrea sing Miserere with you, for there is no one finer."

what a contrast. years ago my brother said that Rock was the only nusic wherein one could absolutely suck and be a huge suc-ces.

Perhaps Strawberry's colicky babe heard in Pavarotti's voice all the pain and beauty in the world.

I always do.

A moment of happiness. Everyone should have moments like that. Look at that smile.
