C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Book of Love

If you're a Book of Love fan-- or an 80's Texas X victim-- you already know the band's best song is any one of the remixes of "Boy." It's a shame that so few people ever heard what they did with Mike Oldfield's classic "Tubular Bells." (Of course Mike did a pretty rockin' remix 30 years after the fact!)

My favorite part of the album-length "Tubular Bells" is near the end of side one, when the late, great Vivian Stanshall (of Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band fame) starts introducing various instruments as Oldfield layers them on. It's great music, but having Viv there just makes me smile.

"I came home late, very late. What could I say to my wife? 'Darling, I've been beaten up again.' Let's face it, she's credulous as hell." - from "Big Shot" by the Bonzos.

Howie,

I don't know if you read these comments. Nevertheless can I do a piece about you for a Madison, WI centric blog? You have so many stories and such great views that I think would appeal to my readership. Get back to me at jaushua_t@yahoo.com.

I used to love love love this song! I grew up in Texas back in the 80s when X was cheap, pure and pretty much legal. I mowed the lawn to get the 10 bucks to buy my first hit. Ahhhhh...memories :)

Since it's '80s night, here's Talk Talk, which I consider one of the most underrated, underplayed '80s bands. The singer has one of the most distinctive voices, kind of like an '80s Steve Winwood, and in fact Winwood produced one of their albums. Recently, one of their songs, "It's My Life," was covered by Gwen Stefani, who made it a hit again. But, I hate to post the ones everyone knows, like "Life's What You Make It," but this is a pretty on live performance (even though the bass player is having a hard time staying on key) of "Such a Shame." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g3dUHqj4pA

What the F, it looks like it is really big hair '80s night, so I will post another well underrated, underplayed band, Japan, with "Quiet Life." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhSPHm5AnHQ

Ah, Tubular Bells.

I saw Mike Oldfield perform about 20 years ago.

That boy could really play.

Too bad he seems to be spending so much time with synthesizers now.

In some ways, Mike Oldfield is responsible for Richard Branson's success.

Branson was basically a hippie businessman who had "Virgin" record stores and mail order record business, and he decided to expand it into a record label too.

While lining up some talent, he let Mike Oldfield (who was a young guitarist in Kevin Ayers band who couldn't get a deal with anyone else) use his newly acquired studio in the off hours.

There, Oldfield laboriously overdubbed all the instruments for what was released as "Tubular Bells," Virgin's first album release. It recorded 16 million in sales and set Branson on his way.

I thought Book of Love was the greatest. They were the darlings of alternative music dj's during their heyday. Especially the song "Boy". I always thought their first two CD's, were their best. I watched them perform live in downtown Gainesville, FL, reknown for such dubious distinctions as having Police Department's that taser students that ask 'uncomfortable' questions of former Senators.

This is a great song, and I just downloaded to ITunes the other day in my on-going effort to get songs I have on cassette only into a digital format. Some othes downloaded:

Regina (The Sugarcubes)
So Alive (Love and Rockets)
In a Big Country (Big Country)

I'm sorry but I just can't sign on with "Boy" as the best Book of Love song. You Make Me Feel So Good will always be my favorite, mostly because of its sincere, gentle sweetness which was a fairly radical statement in the jaded, ironic alternative music scene of the 80s. I also loved Die Metrosen but damned if I know why.

It's a shame none of their subsequent releases came close to that fantastic first album, though I admit they had some good tracks.

Why are 9 out of 10 songs posted on Crooks and Liars just total and utter crap? Once again, stick to the politics!!!!

Shout outs on the pastes: That was awe-inspiring, Jess. You taught me something. Good call, Beth. Mudshark, dig a little deeper. Andrew, are you one of those guys who missed the '70s, 80's, 90's, and '00s? Post or zip it.
