C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Tom Waits
A couple days ago John did a short piece here on Bruce Springsteen and a song he wrote called "Living in the Future." If you missed it, it's worth going back and checking out. Springsteen's written a lot of great songs. The first time I heard him do "Jersey Girl" I assumed he had written that too. After all, he's a Jersey boy. I liked the song well enough but the version that I absolutely love wasn't written by Springsteen or by the other Jersey boy (Bon Jovi) who covers it.
No, the version I listen to all the time is the original version by a California boy, who wrote it for his Jersey born wife, Tom Waits. And what a version it is:

Tom Waits is probably the most underated songwriter & musician of my lifetime.

Bruce also added in an extra verse that's not in the original Tom Waits' recording. I think the extra verse really compromises the song.

He's one of the most wonderful there is.
Tom Traubert's Blues, another Waits classic! Great stuff!!

nice voice, nice feel ... she could actually pull off this Waits cover album
I, uh, thought his wife was from Illinois? (And a different song) Or maybe that's a different wife. Or she moved, who knows.
Tom Waits is a jersey girl?

Well there you see the perils of rewriting the last half of a paragraph without looking at the first half. G'night folks!
Tom Waits is an over rated pianist or should I say penis!

Tom Waits is great. I love "Earth Died Screaming".
I play with the current bass player for Tom Waits. Waits is an interesting guy.

Bless you Tom
Tom Waits has more talent in one finger than everybody else on the current Billboard Hot 100...have you ever seen him in concert, this guy makes the hair on my neck stand up...I have every CD he's ever made. To me he's up there with Dylan...He should run for president with maybe Paris Hilton as his vice president...they'd make a lovely pair.. :) JCB
Hah! I used to play this song at campfire time on college geology field trips. (Way back in the '80's, when I still had a guitar and a little talent, anyway.) One of the "Really Smart Kidz" insisted that Springsteen wrote it, and bet me $10 bucks on it. Took a few weeks, but he payed up! Thanks for the memory! (I probably could have won ten more for "Ol' '55," but didn't play it that time.)
(Note to Bozzo -- just go put on a "New Kids" CD and calm down...)
"There's good music out there, if you look for it... If you don't, the bad (stuff) will hunt you down." Guy Forsyth, on Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Roots and Branches of Americana" KNBT Radio, Deep in the Heart of Texas.
What can you say about Tom Waits.....He's one of a kind...

That song is about how much the Waits impersonator was paid by Frito/Lay to do his Waits Frito Bandito thing that ended up winning Waits almost 2 million in his successful suit against FL. LJM did end up meeting Waits, his wife and his lawyer after the trial, and Waits lives 'Happily Ever After' -

But I don't recall LJM ever telling me where Waits' wife is from.

Hey sphinx!
Hi Stanley! :) :) :) Missed you. Hope your move went smoothly!
Yep, Tom Waits is a National Treasure. A gifted songwriter. Not a bad actor either. This post has given me a hankering to hear some of my personal fave Waits tunes: "Frank's Wild Years" (“Never could stand that dog”), anything else from Swordfishtrombones, "Emotional Weather Report", "The Piano's Been Drinking (Not Me)"...I might have to dust off some vinyl tho'

Moved smooth, life on the other hand? It has it's ups and downs. ;-)
GNA!
Here's a nice musical sample platter and a twist on tonight. Sinead's got a new 2 CD release called "Theology". Here's a great sample of videos and site for it. First video is a terrific video of Sinead talking about the making of Theology.
Sinead O'Connor - Theology
Personally, I agree w. everyone here that Waits is a national treasure. Closest I ever got to him was sharing a baggage carousel for a NY/LA flight that got in around 3AM LA time. I thought that was appropriate considering he's the king of the night owls.
I love Tom's ballads and solo guitar songs but his avant garde disonant material doesn't appeal to me as much. Does anyone know if he's ever put out a compilation album of his best ballads/love songs?

Better than that Kraftwerk crap
i always wondered one thing about waits, how did a black jazz/r&b/blues singer from new orleans end up being born white in pomona california?
when other artists run to cash in on their art and sell their souls to the man....tom has continued to move to smaller and smaller labels and would rather sue than even allow an impersonator to make it sound like he is selling some shitty product
the man has alot of zappa in him
Awesome stuff. Love Tom Waits. Thanks for posting this, C&L.
Too bad I couldn't find anything live video.. But here's a beautiful, beautiful song by T. W.

They say Tom Waits is a perfect example of a "you either love him or cannot stand him" musician. I'm grateful I got to be in the "love him" camp.

Holly Cole does a lovely, slinky version of "Jersey Girl" too. Her album "Temptation" is all Waits covers and it's a perfect introduction to this wonderful singer.
After 20 years of collecting everything Tom's ever done, I finally got to see him live at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Holy god, what a night. That man sings with every cell in his composition.
I've always wanted to do a poster for him, but I most likely would just fuck it up.

Waits is truly one of those artists that has to be seen in concert (if you can call it that... more like an "experience" if you get my drift) to truly be appreciated. I've been a fan for years but it wasn't until I saw him a few years ago in a fairly small venue that my appreciation for him went through the roof.
The most glorious three nights of music in my life were in 1978 at a small bar/club in Madison, Wisconsin called "The Church Key".
Night 1: Leon Redbone
Night 2: Bonnie Raitt (the woman finished off an entire bottle of Jack Daniels during her performance)
Night 3: Tom Waits
I've been a fan ever since. If you've ever had a broken heart, you can't help being moved by Ruby's Arms.
A short look into his creativity.....
Finally, the man is an amazing raconteur....here's an appearance on Letterman.
A National Treasure in capital letters, no doubt.
About 10 years ago, I wrote an Onion-type satirical work of dystopian satire called "The Mutant's Almanac" -- just this thing I printed and photocopied myself -- and I mailed copies out to a bunch of artists whose work I enjoye and admired.
A few months later, I got a handwritten letter in the mail:
"Dear John,
Thank you for the Mutant's Almanac. Thank you for the enlightening info on Creedence Clearwater Revival [this is in reference to a joke in the book, proving he at least opened it].
Sincerely,
Tom Waits
P.S. There should be more people like you in the world."
Naturally, I framed the letter and stuck it on my wall where I see it every day as I leave/enter my home, so it can enervate me periodically.
I mean, is there anything cooler on Earth than being complimented on your artistry by TOM fucking WAITS?!?
Tom also sued GM a couple of years ago for the same thing Frito Lay tried to pull. They sttled out of court early this year....
I had the great pleasure, some 20 years ago, of seeing Waits join Springsteen at the L.A. Sports Arena for a version of Jersey Girl
If you like Tom Waits, you might also enjoy some of the music by Moris Tepper.
He's played with Tom Waits, Frank Black, PJ Harvey and is famous for his work with Captain Beefheart.
Check him out.

tom is the man. i have everything he's ever put out, and seen him twice, in one night! oh what a night it was...
Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits---the holy trinity of popular music songwriting in the twentieth century and continuing into the twenty first.
Sorry Peeps.... I like the SPringsteen version better... not saying i am not of fan.. but love Bruce's better...
