C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Penelope Houston

Penelope Houston has put a version of the Avengers together again and they're on tour. I just noticed they're coming to my neighborhood on October 11. This is the old Avengers at the Mabuhay doing a now-famous show as a benefit for miners on strike. Win an Impeach Cheney cap by telling me about the bass player (Send your answer to downwithtyranny@aol.com)

My Avengers LP is a treasured artifact from the hey days of Punk Rock. I'm a little stunned but pleased to hear that Penelope has reformed the band. I seem to remember reading an interview with her saying how she regretted her Punk Rock days. I guess it must have just been because of the over the top self destructiveness of the likes of Darby Crash and bad drugs that afflicted the LA scene.

Sorry, I meant EP. That said, I see they have a 16 song CD out called "Died for Your Sins." I'm on it as soon as I can find a copy. Oh wait, it's out of print. Damn! How'd I miss that!

The Avengers will go down in history as one of the best Punk bands of all time. I went to so many of their shows I couldn't possibly remember. Penelope's good friends the Mutants will also be one of my favorite bands, along with the DK'S, No Alternative, Contractions ( thanks you Kathy Peck and many others for Dirkfest last June!!!) and many others, just to many to list.

I would like to thank Howie Klein for 415 records and all the great bands that were on that label, without 415 so many great bands would've gone unheard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxr7wYFDKvU&mode=related&search= this is better, the other one got cut short.

I know the e-mail I sent Howie told at least part of the story of the bass player in question. Many people might be surprised who he went on to play guitar for.

Check out their tour dates on myspace. They aren't coming to the mid west which sucks. Almost makes me miss LA.

Oh wait, I guess they'll be in Chicago and Cleveland. Anyone driving from Indiana?

Gary Floyd is the rockingest, huskiest, glbt punk rock survivor in the whole wide world.

I would like to give all the John Lennon friends a heads up, Tuesday Oct. 9th would have been John Lennon 67th birthday. Check out whats happening this year in his honor

Thanks to JCB.

Penelope is very nice. And the Avengers are very, very good.

But Flipper rules, OK.

SF punk rock.

We are super, super enthused to open for the Avengers, and Pansy Division.

I'm a daily enthusiast of your site, so I'm astounded to see that you're promoting the punk rock show we're opening.

Please, show up to the Spaceland show early to see us open for what guarantees to be an outstanding night of punk rock splendor.

And check us out on MySpace if you wonder whether we'll match up (we'll try our best):

Yeah, Flipper is more like it. I don't know. It seems to me the DKs and Flipper were the only decent bands from SF back in the day, and even the DKs were a little artsy. Saw the Mutants, and they sucked. The best punk shows I saw in SF were all from elsewhere. DOA was there for a while, and they were worth seeing. Black Flag would come up sometimes. DKs were great, though. I saw them at The Sound of Music in the Tenderloin in the Rock Against Reagan time period. There was this other band called the Scarz that wasn't punk, but it was great, though. I would love to find out if there are any recordings of them. Very slow grooves, long songs, totally psychedelic, and the punk rockers would actually go see them, unlike the Avengers. If you look at the Avengers' audience, that tells you everything you need to know. The Mab always had these nights where all the hippies would tuck their bell bottoms into their combat boots, tie their hair back in a ponytail, stick a safety pin through the wide wide lapel of their blazers, and bounce up and down because they thought they were supposed to pogo to punk. If those guys had seen the crazy war dance struts some of the real punks were doing, they would have gone home to their bongs. Like someone posted the Dickies. The night the Dickies played at the Mab, I was at a show in the Mission at the Rat's Palace, a Philipino community center that the punks rented for a Black Flag show way before Rollins. They played under the basketball hoop. Fucking great. Great dancing, too. Real energy. Unlicensed beer for a buck out of a cooler full of ice. Fuck the Mab. I mean, I guess it was okay sometimes, and Dirk was funny. There was a new wave band called Bob that was pretty great. Before I got there, the Young Marble Giants had kind of taken everyone by surprise. TSOL was pretty good back then, but seriously, I never even heard of the Avengers back then. Maybe I was just lame or something.

I saw Penelope perform at a club in SF about fve years ago or so, she still rocks. The Avengers together again won't be just another

cheap tragedy

Gee, lyrics are very important but what about musicianship and melody and tempo changes and dynamics and presence? These guys have not got it.

Oh well, it seems like Mr.Klein doesn't want to answer the e-mails about the bass player from the Avengers. Funny thing it says e-mail an answer for an impeach Cheney cap but no response from Howie. Oh well, next time I wont bother, what a waste of time.

Jimmy Wilsey is his name and he played guitar for Chris Issak for 10 or 11 years.

No problem getting the cold shoulder from Mr. Klein and C&L, its kinda something I thought might happen.

What about Crime? Incredible band. Or the Nuns? And especially Chrome, though not strictly just punk.

Thanks for the tip, didn't know the Avengers were touring again.

Just think.......................

Someone, somewhere, someplace actually told this young lady she actually had talent....??

You're...serious...aren't you? To each his own I guess. Penelope's actually spent a considerable amount of time as a well respected singer songwriter outside of the Avengers. I prefer the latter, but a lot of people who heard the solo material told her she had talent. And rightly so. Give some a listen here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/penelopeh

Me, I'm gonna go crank "The Amerikan In Me" one more time.

Anyone remember the SSI.?Pre-Dead Kennedys ,D.H. was the drummer.

Oh well, 24 hrs later and no response from Mr.Klein. FUCK OFF HOWIE

I was most likely there.
One of the best punk songs ever.
Definitive.
