C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Elvis Costello
By Howie Klein Friday Oct 12, 2007 10:02pmThe Goo Goo Dolls played at a Hillary rally in Boston a couple nights ago. But on October 25 Hillary celebrates her 60th birthday at the Beacon Theater in NYC and Elvis-- not the one her husband is always compared to-- is headlining the bash. Tickets go from $2,300 to a mere $250. Or you can hear his first greatest hit free here at the LNMC:

Elvis Costello is the best!! He is NOT a pretender. By the way, Chrissie Hynde was another "best" until her ticket prices went through the roof a few months ago in NYC at some club, not even a concert venue. They were charging $175 for a ticket. Unbelievably steep for those of us who are just "In the Middle of the Road". I'll stick to the old CD's and concert DVD's.
Hey Muddy! Funny, I never even considered Hillary...until i saw the foamimg at the mouth from the righties...and then the lefties....it's the rebel in me....
I saw Elvis last weekend open up for Dylan. He put ol' Bob to shame. Would've preferred a whole evening with Costello as opposed to the off-key warblings and incoherences that make up a Dylan concert these days.
Watching the Detectives...always liked the arrangement.

Sorry sitemoniters...just read the post, thought it would bring out the Hilliary haters...thought I was on topic...sorta'. But I do love Costello. Made it one of those "must listen to" in my kids' music edjamacation. Pssssst. Charlie Rose, Erik Prince, George Clooney...pass it on.
[It's ok. I just don't want the Saturday Night LNMC thread to turn ugly...We have plenty of other threads for that ;) . I already binned a hata comment-Sitemonitor]
Elvis Presley, sorry guys, was the pretender. He stole his style from black entertainers. I saw him in 1971 and everyone I was with agreed the warm up act...Stevie Wonder...was 10 times better.
Elvis Costello is one of the best songwriters ever. And if you look at how many other artists record with him, you'll see the respect other artist have for him. He and his musicians are incredibly talented.
Costello fans, please bring us your Elvis puns.
aaaaahhhhhhhhh...just what I needed. a little anger, a little alienation, a little anarchy and a whole lot of great musicianship.
I had "Back to School Days" by Brinsley Schwartz playing on the iPod today. hard to believe that all the best songs were written more than 30 years ago.

For some reason i can't think about Elvis Costello without thinking about Warren Zevon. Here is Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner.

Is there still classic Elvis? New Elvis' jazz composition was performed at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis about 4 weeks ago.
Ms. Chalk 'n Talk @ 10:
Hey, It could be worse. They could have restricted ticket sales to American Express or Mastercard ticketholders like The Who and Clapton did.

Reminds me of my highschool years...WTG LNMC!
Jackson Browne
I like Elvis, but I lurve his wife, Diana Krall.
Elvis thumbs his nose at Lorne Michaels and "The Man" while performing on SNL. They told him he couldn't do "Radio Radio"

So, how many people think Watching the Detectives would be the perfect opening number for Hillary's shindig?
Spoon sometimes gives me that Costello feeling:

Film right here in Austin, the blue island. You can see the Loop 360 bridge in the reflection in the office windows.
Elvis Costello's real name is Declan McManus. It is not that long ago when the Irish had to hide their Irish Origins in order to be accepted. Jim McKay, of sports commentator fame, said that he has always regretted having changed his name from McManus to McKay. His son is Sean McManus of CBS.
Mike Douglas was born O'Dowd, so we are not very far removed from the era when "No Irish need apply".
The lesson in all of this is: when are we going to stop forcing people to hide who they are!. It serves no useful purpose, and merely creates the Larry Craig's of the world.
how depressing that Elvis C. and the GooGoo dolls would put their cool on the line for such a hawkish hypocrite like (pro-war, pro-death penalty) Hilary.
wordpress keeps eating my posts
Site Monitor: Don't take it personally. The servers are not syncing up properly and it's eating comments and posts alike. We have our tech people trying to fix it now.
I saw this Elvis - THIS version - way back in the day, and I am sure I paid less than $20, to hear THIS music, not schmaltzy covers of Gershwin tunes or whatever the heck he's doing today.
In other words, when he was sorta a punk.
Yeah Elvis stole from black entertainers, and Chuck Berry stole from the hillbillies so what. Goo dolls are incredibly bland and in general, suck. This reminds me of Tom Petty doing a private show for some war profiteer's daughter a while back. uncle joe, if you think that's a dystopian vision of the future you need to look up the defintion of 'dystopian'. This is dystopian:

Hillary and the Goo Goo Dolls suck, Nine Inch Nails rulez...I'm out.
i'm just finishing up an album i recorded w/ elvis c's rhythm section (pete thomas is one of the greatest drummers EVER, unreal timing and feel. and davey's a damn fine bassist)...EC is one of the all time great songwriters, no matter what he may be like as a person. and frankly, if some jerk (on the left or right) offered me mucho $$ to play at a party, i'd say "hell yeah!" just because i disagree with someone's politics doesn't mean i can't take their money...
Sorry this is off topic.

What a friggin' racket.
Mudshark, Gotta love that Carlito tone eh ??
Ever since that came out in ‘89 I’ve played it UMPTEEN times !!
Check out Carlos’ other collaberation with JL Hooker called CHILL OUT !!
And for some mean Wah Wah peddle work check out DEEPER , DIG DEEPER from Carlos’ solo LP BLUES FOR SALVADOR !!
Simply sublime 7 minute wah wah attack.
Elvis Costello gets his ass kissed too much.
Well, Elvis is getting ready to sit on the throne. I don't care if Hillary Clinton got The Who, the Beatles and the Stones all together I would still see her as just another wing of the National WarParty!
Yeah, I think Elvis C. is still pining for some kind of public (or elite) acclaim he thinks he hasn't received yet. Playing a benefit for somebody is an implicit endorsement, and it's hard to believe that the "Tramp the Earth Down" Elvis wouldn't recognize Hillary as New Amsterdam's Thatcher. Like Henry Rollins says, there's nothing like money to cool MFers out.
Also, calling Elvis P. a pretender because he stole from black entertainers is foolish. The black entertainers were stealing from black and white entertainers themselves in a lineage that could be traced back at least 100 years. The drugged-out Presley of 1971 was nothing like the Elvis of 1954, who was a red-hot singer and player with a phenomenal voice and fierce stage act. If he'd been pretending, The Man wouldn't have been trying so hard to censor or silence him.
