I bet there are a lot of Bob Dylan fans at C&L, and probably a few Bette Midler fans as well. But how many have heard the two of them together. Have you heard this duet they did of Bob's classic "Buckets of Rain?" It was first released-- the original, I mean-- in 1975 on Blood on the Tracks and the following year they recorded this duet for Bette's Songs For the New Depression. He only performed the song live once after that, in Detroit in 1990. It sounds like he and Bette totally mangled the lyrics on this version.

Oy veh. I'm a huge Bob fan, and I like Bette OK, but that was truly hideous. I had to shut it off after about 40 seconds.

Oops, I meant Thunder Road! Doh! This is an amazing performance by the hyperactive kid Boss.

nope, never heard it before (that i can actually recall). thanks.
i enjoyed it. guess that makes me a pretty indiscriminating dylan fan.
no, wait, his duet with patti smith on 'Dark Eyes' was something i couldn't completely enjoy. (but serve up nonetheless. love 'em both.)

Dylan's a fraud. Anybody remember Sinead O'Connor performing at the MSG show honoring Dylan where she was booed for her speaking out on behalf of children sexually abused by the Church? Where was Dylan? The ONLY artists to defend her were Lou Reed, Willie Nelson & Kris Kristofferson.

i wouldn't call him a fraud, not nowadays anyways, maybe in some ways many decades ago, but he's also a cat that's wrestled, more n' anything. but still, yeah, he's a pissin' pistol that can mightily provoke. them two aspects, hell, that's half his career right there or ain't it, huh. yeah. it's hard to indict someone for what they didn't do or say, but still...

i did that for some post a year or two back, and try as hard as i can, never quite regretted (to myself) makin' and posting it.

shrug.

I lost all respect for Bob Dylan after seeing his commercial for Cadillac - for a gas guzzling Cadillac SUV. And after reading he doesn't believe in global warming.

Wenner: What do you think of the historical moment we’re in today? We seem to be hellbent on destruction. Do you worry about global warming?

Dylan: Where’s the global warming? It’s freezing here.

- What a prick! And I use to be a big fan, but he's such a fraud.

I'm a big Dylan fan and this version of this great song is utterly terrible. Bette sucks.

Mean Bunny's picture

See, even the best and most important songwriter of modern times (all time?) can occasionaly suck, too. And this version of this song really blows. Nice to know he's a human being, just like the rest of us.

You want a stunning, magical Dylan song duet? Try Stevie Wonder and Glenn Campbell doing "Blowin' in the Wind. If this doesn't give you chills, you voted for Bush:

dylan sucks. i dont get him. clever lyrics, but a comical voice and a face only a mother could love. and now he looks like vincent price and sells cars and underwear. what a joke.

'Buckets of Rain' is one of my favorite Dylan songs. It sounds like the original lyrics weren't flubbed but changed. The original is smarter and funnier. But I loved hearing this one too. Maybe another instance of Dylan refusing to be what he's supposed to be. I'd love to know why he doesn't perform this.

Wow, that was really horrible. Dylan was always overrated. I think when you look up "inauthentic" in the dictionary, that track should start playing. If you want to listen to some real folk music to get that song out your head, try Uncle Earl:

Can you imagine him and Middler not getting along.
Can you imagine Dylan talking about recent politics?
Q: Ah Bob, what do you think of the current situation in Iraq?
A: Iraq? It's the way it's always been only worse.
Q: Worse? Would you expand on that?
A: Well, um, it's worse then it's been. Everythins worse
than it's been, even me.
Q: Right Bob. Do you think the worlds gonna make it past 2012?
A: 2012, 2023 don't make any difference to me.
Right Bob.
Sounds like a Tom Tomorrow cartoon.

Sinéad O'Connor - War (Live @ Bob Dylan Tribute)

What were those morons thinking. Kristofferson was wonderful, 'don't let the bastards get to you'. We need more Sinead O'Connors.

"Dylan’s a fraud. Anybody remember Sinead O’Connor performing at the MSG show honoring Dylan where she was booed for her speaking out on behalf of children sexually abused by the Church? Where was Dylan? The ONLY artists to defend her were Lou Reed, Willie Nelson & Kris Kristofferson"

Dont get me wrong, but wasn't that whole show a tribute to Dylan? Ie: A show to celebrate Bob? I admire what Sinead did and think, in retrospect, it was a brave move doing it in such a forum. But I dont blame Bob for not rushing to her rescue. Who even said Bob was anywhere near the stage?! This was during his "dark times", hell, going by various stories I've heard he could easily have been down the road somewhere in a local bar waiting for his "5 minutes till stage Mr Dylan!"

As for all the people rushing to attack him re: the "comments" over global warming. Dont you people understand Dylan at all? You claim to be fans yet when he throws up a light hearted AMBIVILANT comment in response to the question, he's suddenly your public enemy #1 ?! Dylan never answers these sorts of questions with a straight face. He's just doing what he always did. And while I'm at it, do you only listen to music on the basis of weither the musicians themselves are eco friendly? Wel jeez, good luck. No doubt your entire playlist consist of some watered down, hippy dippy bullsh@#. I dont look to my musicians for answers on global politics (especially not Dylan), nor do I expect them to be morally superior. Nor do I expect them to share my political beliefs. Get a grip people!

Trent's picture

I should also add with regards to the two advertisments he's participated in of late. If you note interviews with Dylan circia mid 60's, when asked if he'd ever agree to his music being used for commercial purposes he replies more than once with "maybe for womens underwear..". Well, hey, hence Victorias Secrets. As for Dylan advertising the car, does this also mean that I cant ever listen to the Rolling Stones because they allowed Bill Gates/Microsoft to use one of their songs, thus always equating jagger and Co with endorsing a company whose history is littered with dodgy dealings...?

So Dylan is a fraud. A fraud what? Guru? God? Iconoclast? Revolutionary? Leftist? Genius?

To be a fraud, it seems to me you have to claim to be something you're not. What has Dylan ever claimed other than being a "song and dance" man?

Just because he's not your personal (or group) savior doesn't mean he's a fraud. In fact, it seems to me, he sometimes behaves the way he does just to remind everybody that he is not the Savior and isn't claiming to be.
