C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson will be 75 next year. I used to be a dj in a country bar in San Francisco and he was always a national treasure to me. Great singer, great songwriter, great spirit. He did this duet with Susan Tedeschi on the first of his three 2000 album releases, Milk Cow Blues. I'm not going to Kansas City on this trip, but I thought you might like to see what it looked like.

I would love to smoke weed with Willie :)

A great man he is, but I have to put him third in the list of great country singers:

Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash take the top two

Years ago I didn't like him.

Robin Williams had a great bit about Willie. Goes something like, "Willie's so mellow, if the Buddha ever met him, he'd be like, 'Whoa, that dude is laid back.'"

I got to see Willie and Emmylou Harris in concert, soon after Red-Headed Stranger was released. When Willie sang, "he cried like a baby, he screamed like a panther in the middle of the night," the men in the audience went wild and roared, as if to say, I know how that feels, I know exactly how that feels.

I'll never forget that night, the way Willie could touch people down to the marrow of their souls.

Yeah, Emmylou was incredible, too.

I don't usually get this far at the late night music club, I guess I'd have to say Willie brought me here. I'm not a member of the WN cult club but I'd like to say I think he's a high quality human.

On some recordings his voice is just not listenable, particular bad digital stuff. "Milk Cow Blues" is an exceptional recording, one which I sometimes pull out when doing equipment comparisons.
In my opinion, "Red Headed Stranger" (I've only heard the original vinyl) has to be one of the top 10 country albums ever.....on any ones list. It is a complete album in every way. The sound of the vinyl is sweet, an audiophile recording.

Others must also have an understanding of his timing that I can't grasp. Sometimes his guitar pickin' throws off my swayin while I'm listening.

I highly recommend the the two albums I've mentioned, to anyone. I hope someone who doesn't know Willie to try some, and I hope he makes a few bucks. I know you don't know me but trust me on this one.  willie

I never got into hardly any country music. But Willie is great. Seems like such a good person and I enjoy his music. This is my all time favorite country song, and these are the guys I consider the cream of the country crop:

Willie's a treat and so are the regular folks here in KC.. but too many Chamber of Commerce pics in that for my tastes.. so many of the regular folks here are African American and others of color.. I didn't see any in this video so that part was very disappointing and too many of the crazy women just looked like calculating voguettes.. and none of the cowboys and bikers that 'me Says' writes about above.. Folks that just had to be goin' to Kansas City weren't going to the Plaza..12th St. and Vine was wild and diverse, man!

Well, in particular Wille would never aprove of Reefer Madness but it sure as hell explains a lot of my parents' generation and it sure as hell is pathetic and hilarious and sad as it can possibly get. REEFER MADNESS!

NOT.

Banning the growing of hemp is a crime against humanity.

You know why? Hemp doesn't even get you high. It's an all versital weed that can be used for almost anything from soap to clothes.
This isn't even talking about the tiniest percentage of THC to get someone high.

So let's keep growing clothes and goods in plastics! That translates to a form of petroleum! But hey!

Don't get high! Take xanex, klonopin, zoloft, ritalin, vitalin and lots and lots of cocaine, GHP, heroine, opium, liquer and avoid pot at all costs.

Do it! Big Pharma will love you!

Oh Willie. One of my favorite moments of the '06 campaign was when Willie Nelson stopped by Missouri, endorsed Claire McCaskill, and took a picture with her. So awesome =)

Makes me miss my lovely KC home...can't wait to go back soon!

I guess I misinterpreted Neil Young's song, "No Wonder," with the line "Willie stopped singing."

I thought, wow, Willie stopped singing? Too bad.

Glad to hear I was jumping to conclusions.

From "No Wonder":
That song from 9/11/ keeps ringing in my head
I'll always remember/ something Chris Rock said
Don't send no more candles/ No matter what you do
Then Willie stopped singing/ And the prairie wind blew

Country SINGERS? If you don't put Loretta Lynn ahead of him in your list, it's bullshit. She could sing the socks off of Willie, and he'd readily admit that.

Larry Kings Orgasm's picture

Kansas City is one of the most anti marijuana cities in the nation. You can't buy paraphernalia, it's hard to even find rolling papers.
It's a cradle of neo-cons and it's a bad place to be.
Best advice to all is to avoid that place, seriously.

alex valgus's picture

Cash and Nelson, song writers of renown. Singers they are not. Just like Kristofferson, Neil Young, and Dylan are not. Merle Haggard writer and singer. Jerry Garcia writer not a singer. Emmy Lou singer. Loretta Lynn More writer than singer. Dianna Krall singer. Robin Williams writer, singer, and sweet guitarist.

The confusion seems to be between a song writer and a song singer.

Paul in LA's picture

alex valgus @ 36 "Loretta Lynn More writer than singer."

What?

You are in the lower percentile of opinion on that, alex.

Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter singing," her vocalizing, is an internationally recognized icon of country music.

Paul in LA's picture

alex valgus @ 36:

Cash and Nelson, song writers of renown. Singers they are not.

They have been both stupendous singers, iconic singers. Johnny Cash's voice is known from farthest Tahiti to the cold frigid depths of Siberia.

Willie Nelson is a different kettle of fish because his voice is so strange. But his top songs are sung with such a unique tone that the instant correlary is Neil Young. Neither has the kind of voice that you'd think would be melodious. And yet....

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
And what's on the other side?

Rainbows are visions. But only illusions and rainbows have nothing to hide.

So we've been told and some choose to believe it.
I know theyre wrong wait and see.
Someday you will find it...the rainbow Connection.. the lovers, the dreamers and me..

Willie is a survivor, to be sure. Especially for someone who made a pretty decent career as a pop singer and couldn't sing a note in tune if his supply of ice cream depended on it.
