Late Night Music Club with Krishna Das

A few years ago a friend invited me to his house to meet Baba Ram Dass, someone whose book Be Here Now changed my life. I had actually met him before, in Amsterdam when I worked in the meditation center there in the 70s, but I was eager to meet him again. I was the first guest to arrive and soon after me Ram Das and his friends got there. One guy walked over to me and said, "You remember me?" He looked familiar, but I didn't. "I'm Jeff Kagel," he said and then I remembered. I remember that every girl I ever wanted to go out with in college was in love with him. He was a folk singer then; now he's Krishna Das, the master of kirtan, Hindu chants to the glory of God. I wound up going to see him do a live show and it was great and I've been listening to his uplifting music ever since. This track, "Namah Shivayah" (translated as Pilgrim Heart") I found on a 2004 release, Greatest Hits of the Kali Yuga but it was originally released on one of his earliest albums, Pilgrim Heart in 1998.

“Namah Shivayah” does not translate to Pilgrim Heart

“Namah Shivayah” translates to "I salute/bow to Lord Shiva"

Maybe Godsmack took their sound from this song.

I thought Dr. Richard Alpert wrote Be Here Now. No wait. ZOMG!!! How old am I??

I have to ask, but, where is the love, where did it go and what did you do with it? Perhaps I should rephrase that. Are you or have you ever been a member of the Republican Party? There, that sounds more like it.

Ram Dass is a saint and beloved human being.

Thank you for mentioning him, Howie, and offering Das' track tonight. Namaste!

Old enough to remember Leary.

Ram Dass was previously known as Richard Alpert, Timmy Leary's old acid buddy. he lives in a beautiful place in Maui off of the Hana Highway. we dropped in on him there last year and had an amazing experience.

Krishna Das is a different person, yes Jeff something. I love his music but had to stop going to his shows because I didn't think it fit with the whole sensibility for me to get so turned on by his incredbily sexy voice LOL

Howie, someday we have to meet up. Everytime you put up one of these threads I it's like living part of my life over again. I was there at so many of those happenings from Family Dog to Pearl Harbour and the Explosions at the Mabuhay Gardens, and now this one. Peace and Love,

Susan P in Raleigh

a tremendous intro HKlein

I loved John McLaughlin, then Govinda and now Krishna Das. What an uplifting and transcendental rendition. Many many thanks for this.

The images were stunning too, the respect for life nature and beauty is conveyed. However, I cannot help wonder how Baba Ram Das's theologic insights have contributed to challenging the utter neglect of children in this civilization even in the best of times. Too many positives in the music so I cant elaborate further now

Best. LNMC. Ever.

Thanks so much. I love Krishna Das & I think we all need to remember love, now more than ever.

And I'm a jaded ol' agnostic, to boot. :)

Thanks for the soothing music. After a day that included listening to Diane Rehm talk about the rise in food prices & world hunger with a guy from the IMF, a guy from the Farm Bureau, & a guy from some industrial agriculture support group, I didn't much like the discussion, needless to say, I needed something to calm me down. I also spent some useless time on a purportedly Democratic Party supporting blog that would rather sit there preening rather than actually do something for the country. Yikes, I've just about had enough. Thanks again, my aging & slightly damaged heart appreciates you.

I've heard some Buddhist chanting and mantra songs that sound similar to this. Different language of course.

What I mostly remember about Baba Ram Dass is the superb parody column that Natlamp had under the byline Baba Rum Raisin. Philosophically it made about as much sense.

as liberals shouldn't we be against all religions? lol.. jk.. I am a Hindu (used to be one before I turned atheist) myself, so dont bother writing to me, save your crayons..

I liked his Om Namah Shivay and his Hanuman Chalisa...I used to be a Hanuman worshipper and have never come across a rendition of Hanuman chalisa that was sung with such intensity and heart... Hats off to Krishna Das (people stop spelling it with two s's like in ass)..

I think "Pilgrim Heart" is one of his best. I love Mountain Hare Krishna from that CD. Sting lends his voice as well. Namaste!

you are very correct - Be Here Now - its first chapter is the record, if you will, to the transformation of Dr. Richard Alpert, (a Harvard Professor and cohort of Timothy Leary's), toward Baba Ram Das (not only an intellect but a being of spirituality, compassion and hope). The remaining chapters discuss spiritualism, meditation, yoga practice, various methods to explore our own life aka the "cookbook" of life, as well he offers books to consider reading (or as he states to "hang out with"). Very interesting individual whose website is http://www.ramdass.org/. Namaste

I just introduced this to my husband as my new favorite song. He thought I was making fun of him but after our daughter and I danced around joyfully he was convinced. He said, "Do you know that this is Krishna Das? Where did you find this?! I have this album!" Sweet. We do very well considering that he is a Late Boomer (Ram Das, 70's Guitar Guys, Jazz) and I am Gen X (Jello Biafra, Bauhaus, Buthole Surfers, Smiths, Argentine Tango). But we both love Krishna Das, Kate Bush and Ani Difranco!

Howie,
Is there any chance you have red hair and used to be a camp counselor on the east coast??
