Late Night Music Club with Brendan Perry
By Howie Klein Monday Apr 21, 2008 10:00pmBrendan Perry is the other half-- Lisa Gerrard is probably better known-- of Dead Can Dance. He started out, though, in his native New Zealand as the leader of a punk outfit called The Scavengers. In 1993 Brendan, already a 4AD artist as part of Dead Can Dance, contributed a cover of Tim Buckley's haunting "Happy Time" for an ultra-limited edition 4AD compilation The 13 Year Itch, which was sold only at a five night live festival in London, reportedly Brendan's first solo show. Several artists I worked with-- Lush, Kristin Hersh, Red House Painters, Wolfgang Press-- were also on the compilation so I wound up with a copy. I figured people here might enjoy it and find some relevance in Buckley's lyrics.

Howie,
Were all the songs covers of Buckley? Could you post the tracklist?
Big Buckley fan -- both Tim and Jeff, but Tim was the pure poet, the magician, the starsailor. Long may the melody find the rhyme.
B.
No mistake that Hal Ashby used Tim Buckley's "Once I Was" for an iconic scene in "Coming Home." Howie's edit, with its juxtaposition of Vietnam and Iraq vets, reminds me of that, and that recent stories of the VA coverup of military suicide attempts. Sad, sad world. "I'm coming home to stay" sure has a different meaning in this context, doesn't it?
Thanks again, Howie.

The Scavengers - Mysterex (you think you are but we know you're not)
When I first heard them, I assumed that a lot of it was electronic BS. Then I saw them. Not this, but similar. It's quite amazing.
My favourite Dead Can Dance... Very sad though... for JTM

Benvolio @ 1:
This was the only Tim Buckley song on this album
Without a doubt, the clearest, cleanest, most dynamic live DCD recording ever - from their last tour in America late 2005:

Thanks Howie.
It brought a bitter tear to my eye. Brendan Perry's voice is extraordinarily compelling and honest. The video broke my heart and focused my anger on one man -- the last frame, that portrait, I wonder if he's wearing a flag pin? I wonder if he'll wear it when he vetoes the new GI Bill?
Great video. I had not heard that version of this song. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, and Skippy the Chimpster is a douche bag, in case you were wondering...
Many may hate me for saying this but I have always found his voice almost indistinguishable from Neil Diamond's. I've seen DCD live four times and every time just confirmed it more.
Mind you I don't consider it an insult, but I know a lot of ND haters are breaking out their Newbie Voodoo Dolls™ right about now. Ouch!
Hey Howie-
Consider this a request for a Wolfgang Press post. Maybe Louis XIV?
Kristin Hersh is one of my all-time favorites...both as an artist & as a person.
Tim, god how I miss you and your son. And Brendon thanks for the cover. And Howie, thanks for the post. It's weird to find I have kinship with others that I have never met and probably will never meet.
good times from the past: seeing Kristin Hersh and Brendan Perry on the same bill - i think Great American Music hall in SF?....feels odd to say "KH opened for" -- this would have been one of her 'firsts' post-Throwing Muses. K Hersh is awesome!!!! and Brendan Perry too!
Thanks!
If you have not heard it, you should listen to the song SEVERANCE by Dead Can Dance. Brendan Perry is amazing.
THE SERPENT'S EGG is a must have in any music collection.

Yup, it was those two and John Doe on that tour. Really good show. Perry did a mesmerizing version of "Song to the Siren." Too bad Hersh is sort of flying below the radar again, her last album was quite good. Saw her do a great in store at a tiny DC record shop last year. What a label 4AD once was.
