C&L's Late Nite Music Club with The Brecker Brothers
By John Amato Wednesday Aug 06, 2008 10:00pm
One of my favorite all time bands. You know how I feel about Michael. He's one of my heroes.
'Dennis Chambers on Drums, Mike Stern on Guitar, and James Genus on bass, and George Whitty on keyboards.'
Brecker Brothers Live In Barcelona - Some Skunk Funk

Certain this doesn't relate but as I just posted it on a wing nut site I thought I'd share it with friends...
Ah, it is reassuring to know that I can always rely on C&L every night to deliver some fine music.
Most excellent !
I confess I have never heard them before ( yeah I live under a rock I guess...) they are great..thank you....( if you like Blind Faith I have Eric Clapton and Nathan East "Can't find my way Home" up over at watergate...your band here kinda goes nicely with a little Blind Faith...)
Cinco estrellas!
Chambers is a scary drummer.
regardless of whether one doesn't like his style of
music, M.B. for me is/was the best technical saxophonist
on the planet, just simply amazing what he could do on the horn...!
As a working saxman myself, he's just nth degree inspiration.
Damn, that boy could play !!

enigma, me too .... I had never heard of the Brecker Brothers either. I don't have a lot of spare time to be online during the day and that is why C&L is always such a nightly treat.
Congrats on your special celebration today !
I have been a huge fan of the brothers since the 1970's when jazz fusion was just beginning. This is one of my all time faves. Although I have it on vinyl, and, of course, I've seen them live a lot in the 1970's, it is nice to have the video.
Chambers: Just filthy.
Good call, bro: this was a SMOKIN' band.
Deeeee-yaaaaaammmmm!!!!
Michael can start a solo at ELEVEN and then go way, WAY up from there.
I saw the Michael Brecker Quartet in 1989 and I can still remember every single note he played. He gave a clinic earlier that day and it was just beautiful. A day I'll never forget.
Ahhh, I had to turn back on Steppenwolf. Chirpy jazz does nothing for me.
There awesome musicians obviously, but if there is no pain or struggle intertwined in there somewhere, I drift elsewhere.
I just don't get it. Obviously good chops, but not something I would ever consider listening to. Thanks for posting it though!
Good chops-Uh-are you listening to Michael's Improvisation? he gives you the history of the saxophone in a 2 minute solo-From Trane to Funk
Way way beyond just chops
I really miss him
I always felt sorry for Randy when he had to follow Mikes solo
Dennis Chambers-he is just to baaad
BTW-The Hiram Bullock memorial in NYC the other night was very moving and spiritual-Hiram was an incredibly gifted musician
True story: Sometime in the 70's I drove 1400 miles straight through (took 24 hours exactly) from south Florida to northern Illinois... alone... with only two cassette tapes in my car. One was Best of Steely Dan, and the other was a tape someone had made with the Brecker Bros. on one side and Tony Williams Lifetime on the other.
I'd never been exposed to the Brecker Bros. (or Williams) before that time, and what a way to pick up on them. To this day I know EVERY freaking note of every freaking song on both tapes. I must have listened to both of them dozens of times over and over.
In addition to being just great music, I'll say this.... it's hard to find better music to drive to..... kept me going through the Smoky Mts. in the dead of night and right on through.
Thanks for sharing this great vid.
Smokin and Tight ....how I like it!
I wasn't familiar, as some others have noted, but wow!!!
Try a little Maceo Parker while you're at it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABLwmYI09Lw
Death to all EWIs!
we saw them at a free show on Penns Landing philadelphia. the heat index was 120+ but the brecker bros. were hotter. it really doesn't get much better than this.
thank you brecker bros.
That was pretty hot.
Love me some Brecker Brothers, too, John.
One of my fav's:
If you Want to Boogie
Good taste John.
Good jam. Here's a little more jazz.
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Lila's Dance
Sweet jam, I think I like them better than Liqued Soul.
Awesome.
One of Michael's greatest solos is in Funky Sea, Funky Dew

Michael Brecker was stunningly funky.
Sorry, I just hate that sort of crap.
Are they brothers of Breck Girls?
http://blogs.chron.com/txpotomac/kaybayreal.jpg
Don't forget the shit-loads of Aqua Net
"sooth Hussein" should be hanged for saying this is crap. I saw Michael several times (played with Randy once). The last time I saw him was at the Blue Note Tokyo, back when.....fungi were in style in Japan and my friends and I were partaking. He, Calderazzo, Minh-Doky, and Tain took me to a different planet!!!
Saw 'em a couple of years ago with Tony Levin on bass. Levin was awesome but the rest of the band put me to sleep. Every now and then, Tony would lay down some angular & edgy Crimsonesque base line amidst the funk and the crowd would roar. The man is awesome!
john you're killin' me here with the brecker brothers and alternatively, billy cobham stuff you spotlight.
in the late 60's-mid 80's i used to shuttle between clubs 'n' venues between boston, storrs (remember the shaboo inn? *tons* of big acts hid out there to avoid crowds. hell bonnie raitt almost had her name carved into a bar stool.)
i'm dying to post a good vid of a band called Dreams that Michael and Randy Brecker, Billy Cobham, and John Abercrombie were in from 1970 to 1972 or 3.
they were a jazz/rock fusion band with a dose of funk. technically spot on as you can imagine.
i've been scouring my contacts for leads on *any* good vid of dreams performing"medicated goo" (i thought you'd get a charge out of it as opposed to the traffic version by steve winwood). can't findd a peep of a good vid yet. as a bonus both lps were re-releleased as audio cd's in 1997, and now at itunes and mp3.
the neat thing on the 2nd lp however is the cover art was done bynone other than the cartoonist/artist gahan wilson who featured odd and funny characatures of all the musicians on the cover...in a very very strange place indeed.
amazon sells 'em.
they released two lps
dreams in 1970:
