could somebody please explain beck's appeal? i have never been able to understand his music's popularity. i find it dissonant and contrived, and at times a rip-off and absurd (devil's haircut?!?! WTF?). maybe it is something lacking in me, but no matter how hard i try i cannot find any redeeming qualities in his music.
I think it's a hipster douchebag thing...Not that the guy has never done good things, because there are songs I like, but at some point the hipster douchebags annointed Beck as the savior, and now they just won't back off the annointment.
RE: Greg@9 & Andy@12 -- I agree it's a hipster douchebag thing, but perhaps also a Scientology thing. I get the creeps when I hear Beck, wondering how the hell he can believe in that crap, and about the real inspiration for his music. How a Scientologist can be an idol of hipster douchebags is beyond me.
Beck was born into Scientology, so he didn't really have much say in the matter growing up. And, according to his late friends, the filmmaker couple who committed suicide, Beck was desperately trying to get out. He denies that now.
I don't like Modern Guilt much, or most of his newer stuff.. He released two indy, lo-fi albums earlier in his career that were really great. "Stereopathetic Soulmanure" and "One Foot in the Grave." Johnny Cash and Tom Petty both covered songs from those releases. Highly, highly recommended.
I'm no hipster, but I love Beck -- despite some songs of his that I find hard on the ears, and the fact that he's a Scientologist. (Which I find really bizarre.)
One thing I love is his sense of humor. I saw him play at the Santa Monica Civic years ago, and I have never laughed so much during a concert. He was hilarious, break dancing, wearing goofy costumes, etc.
Second is his mastery of many different styles of music. Though he doesn't focus on blues or rock or hip-hop or cocktail lounge music, he could do well at any of them.
Sea Change? Great music, but probably the most depressing album I've ever listened to.
Dissonant, absurd? Yes! An aquired taste? For sure. A rip-off? Not at all. Beck's one of the most creative and original artists I've ever heard.
FUCK OFF! Beck is the shit!....and who cares if he's a scientologist, thats his business.
All his albums are great and so is Modern Guilt. Beck creates good original music which is sorely lacking in the music world today.
And give some props to DangerMouse for producing this album.
How pretentiously annoying of you. Hipster douchebag?
Give me a break.
Hee hee....There was no small amount of intended irony in my statement there. I comment here a lot, too, where the term "hipster douchebag" is tossed around- and worn with glee- like a string of mardi gras beads.
So I'll admit to some pretentiousness, just not in the manner you probably meant! :D

Spoken like a true fanboy. While it's true that Beck does hit the refresh button more than most bands/musicians out there today, he doesn't do so enough, IMO. Frankly, every now and then he seems like he's treading water.
Sampled George H.W. Bush ('I'm a fighter. I'm a winner...) on 'Loser'. Always thought it was obvious that Beck (or SOMEBODY - ANYBODY) should do a 'Loser' remake/cover sampling George W. Bush (I'm the decider. Fool me once...). Doesn't that just seem WAY obvious? Anyone out there up for making 'Loser '08'?

Listen, if someone has to EXPLAIN it to you, you just don't have what it takes. It is definitely something lacking in you.

Beck is so Vain that he probably doesn't think Carly Simon should het songwriting credit got this one. Jeez, could you be a little less obvious!!!
I got 2 e-meters and a brainwashed clone
There's only one Beck, and his first name is Jeff.
