C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Ian Dury

We have a new contributer here at C&L: Cernig of Newshoggers.  Since I am ramping up after being a beach bum for the last week with my family (still trying to get the beach tar off my feet--ask me how much I appreciate off shore drilling.  I also had a great dinner with Howie Klein, Digby, John and the other indispensable woman in Amato's life, but I digress), I asked Cernig if he had a choice for tonight's Music Club and he gave me Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, available on the CD, The Very Best Of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

So join me in giving Cernig a big C&L welcome, won't you?

Welcome to C&L where people are more than willing to tell you if you're doing it wrong (even if you're doing it right).

Amato has other indispensable women in his life?

Who knew he was such a player?

Can I be his wing-man?

Prob'ly you know that not all the tar-seeps on the Pacific coast are related to drilling. I usta surf Devereaux Point at Isla Vista, aka Coal Tar Sands National SOmethingorOther. We always carried big bottles of baby oil and rags with which to clean the tar bubbles and slicks of ourselves and our boards and wet-suits...The indigenes who lived along the coast before the Spanish came harvested tar there since time immemorial...it was plentiful, in sizes from pea-sized globules to chunks the size of a dead perch...the earlier inhabitants apparently didn't surf, but their loss. when it was pumped, there was a really nice right that went around--pretty close to--the rocks on the point and swept into this sweet, deep cove. it was, unfortunately, seldom pumped so we usually screwed around in the beach break on the left side...then la jicora ('the Hic") for a grande chorizo burrito and a bohemia... i was down at the Santa Barbara fishing dock the day Raygun got shot. When the news came that he'd live, I wasn't the only one who expressed the opinion that a boy shouldn't have been sent on a man's errand...ahhhhh... good times, early '80s...

Hit Me, Hit Me, Hit Me.

I don't remember the dinner. Must have been black out drunk again.

Welcome to the House Cernig.
Great Choice.

Pretty sure that he's always looking for additions, CalLady. Few are able to resist the Amato mojo. ;)

Actually, I'd say that my husband has dibs on my real life, but jokes that I'm Amato's cyberwife.

We were "summering" in Santa Barbara, as a matter of fact. The hubby did undergrad work there in the 70s and still retains fond memories of IV. The beach tar wasn't as bad on the uppity beaches of Santa Barbara proper, but boy, were the soles of my feet black from hanging out as the kids body surfed in IV.

I know it's not ALL from the oil platforms so conspicuously placed off the coast, but I grew up on the beaches of SoCal (LA & OC) and I didn't know what beach tar was until I started spending time in Santa Barbara. Luckily, I'm a painter and have constant access to paint thinners, which work on the tar as well.

Ian was such a talent, overcoming polio, star of television and stage, magnificent voice, great piano player and better lyricist.

Grab a Blockhead album, rent a Cortina and grab your Hyena.

You're truly missed from this end of the wire.

If you come down to Southern California, I will make sure to be there too, miss k, and we'll force Amato out of the bat cave again. Do you eat sushi, by any chance? The last two times I've had dinner with John, we've gone out for sushi.

You two sound like a "Real Wild Child".

When I pass off this mortal coil, I shall not be regret being denied such a thing if it exist, because got to live in Santa Barbara between 1980 and 1984, making aroun $20/hour as a carpenter with a LOT of overtime. Even for Santa Bruta, that was pretty good money in those days...I was becoming involved with my future wife, who was in grad school there, and in whose wake I would contentedly follow for the next 17 years...a long, not unpleasant story...

Hey Nicole, Did you make it into the Ranch?

I love sushi.

yeah! early eighties or late seventies-- dury opened for lou reed. and then when reed was too fucked up to even walk they handed the rest of it over to dury- fantastic!

mudshark @ 17:

Hey Nicole, Did you make it into the Ranch?

Ranch? Whose ranch?

Woody, Santa Barbara is absolutely heavenly. The best part is going with someone who lived there and knows all the yummy hole-in-the-wall places to eat and little treasure places to discover. As big a foodie as I am, I like those little places that do food very well far more than the four star fancy places. Give me picnics on the beach over tea at the Ritz any time.

miss_kitty @ 20:

I love sushi.

Come to LA then. We'll make it a threesome. ;)

Great music, mudshark. Especially that tune at number 7.

Fucking brilliant! An all-time fave.

A pretty good fan video. ...great band from my hometown, Austin.

I have always liked Ian Dury and his son Baxter Dury isn't bad either.

Hey all,

Thanks for the warm welcome and thanks Mudshark for the extra tunes! I'm looking forward to getting to know the regular commenters and to getting the hang of the C&L scene.

Round about Dury's time I had a six inch purple mohawk :-)

Here's one I was actually there for - The Clash, London's Burning, Rock Against racism '78. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPcjkgYS-cU

Welcome back, Nicole. You were missed on C&L.

Welcome Cernig!

Tell Em I said "Wacka wacka". She'll know what that means. ;)

OMG! Ian Dury! You just made my day! Now I wanna go dig out "Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3"!
Thank you. I'm going to get back into bed now.

Thanks for posting WAKE UP MAKE LOVE TO ME dat' was'da shit from Ian. That bass player had that unique British funk style.

This song is just a vehicle for that INCREDIBLE bass line. Thumbs down to the video editor for not having the bass video sync with the audio. Thumbs up to the lyricist for the international flava -- I love songs that take you all over the world ("from the vineyards / of Bordeaux / to the slums / of Idaho"); Joe Strummer did a lot of that too.

Sure, Ian Drury and the Blockheads, but never the Mekons, the Waco Brothers, Sally Timms or Long Jon Langford. how long was Drury's career?

If it ain't Stiff, it ain't worth a fuck!

Right On! Ian Dury Rules! It was very sad when he passed on a few years back. One of the great ones.

oh man, i loves me some mekons - one of my fave shows ever was them opening for camper van beethoven at the metro in chi-town. jon broke 2 strings, and his hand was bloody by the end of the set...then camper van came on, did a great set, did an encore, then the place had cleared out. they came out again (maybe 25 people left), played for another 1/2 hr. THEN they came out a 3rd time for another 1/2 hr...only 10 of us in the joint. i see jon every year down in austin for sxsw - he's EVERYWHERE. does at least 5 or 6 gigs w/ his various groups (plus the bloodshot showcase/boozefest). what an awesome guy, super nice and easy to talk to - esp. if you buy him a drink...

kool and the gang. the blockheads had the vibe.

nickmagoo.

My two favorite Mekon shows were at Maxwells in NJ after So Good It Hurts was released and at CBGBs after Rock and Roll came out. They tore the roof off of CBGBs!
