C&L's Late Nite Music Club with the Angry Samoans
(guest blogged by C&Ler Andy K)
Lights Out from The Unboxed Set
When do fads become trends, and when do trends become stale?
Why hasn't the Segway caught on? Why did Karl Rove's stepfather become enamored (allegedly) with piercing? Faux-hawks- why?
I ask these questions because I recently found out that my Uncle Denny and his wife got matching tattoos (his first and only, afaik) on their lower backs when they wed. The tats are tasteful, I suppose: they're claddaghs, an Irish symbol of love, friendship and loyalty. Tasteful, and discrete, too- unless they go to the beach to sunbathe.
Did I happen to mention that Uncle Denny was 69 years old when he took the needle?
Enough is enough, already. Could be worse, I guess. The "Lights Out Way" might have caught on.
[Full disclosure: Andy K does not have any piercings, tattoos or implants. And he uses a cereal bowl to cut his hair.]

On the plus side, for your Uncle Denny, his tat is unlikely to have time to blur and stretch from cute kitten into blurred distorted tiger as it were, the fate of so many tats.
As usual, the LNMC brings us a great band I hadn't thought about for a long time.

Stretching and fading aside, Uncle D's current missus is his fourth, and when he married her, she was the third inside of ten years- or was it five?
On the upside, he's had a good run as an architecht, so it shouldn't bankrupt him if he ever feels the need to have it removed.

I like the old stuff a lot more. After "Master Of Puppets" and some songs of "... And Justice For All" it got completely rubbish. But that is just IMO.
miss_kitty @ 26:
Yeah, same here. Did you see when they won a Grammy for this? They played this song on teevee. I think the crowd(all stars of some kind) had no clue as to what they were about to witness. I sat at home and laughed my ass off. The look on their faces was priceless. slackjawed. utterly stunned. It looked like thier hair was permanently forced back by hurricane force winds.

Hey, muddy, don't know if you've been folling the EPL, but Hull City- in the top division for the first time in their 104 year history- got a 1-1 draw at Blackburn. Two games in and Hull City (the Tigers) have 4 points- and they were bookmakers' favorites to be relegated. I'm kinda pulling for these guys now!

Rangers just got US national Maurice Edu. He played well at center back in the Olympics, but he's a really good midfielder. Celtic play Rangers next Saturday (Edu probably won't play- he's just received his work permit).

No one should be allowed to get a tattoo until they're 69, or otherwise uninsurable. A tattoo is a deliberate decision to do something painful, that normally makes what you already have look worse, that costs actual money, and that you will always regret at some future date. 69 is the perfect age for getting a tattoo: it might actually make some body part more attractive, it's less expensive than your prescriptions, and you won't have to regret it very long.

Hmmm.
52 seconds of the Angry Samoans.
Seemed so much longer.
That amazing album cover! I'll never forget the disgusted look on the face of the record store clerk as I purchased "Back from Samoa" back in 1982. It's funny how I now get nostalgic for the snobby, holier than thou record clerks of days of yore, all of them probably failed or struggling musicians themselves. The days are now long gone when you had people at the store know anything about music at all (and it's yet another reason to shop online or buy digitally, or to seek out that out of the way inner city vinyl and used CD shop.)
You know, for over a quarter of a century this song has made me damn happy to be alive -- what a fantastic band they were (& VOM were no slouches either). Excellent choice!
