Late Night Music Club with The Staple Singers

So I'm drinking beer, listening to some dinky local band and shooting pool in a no-name suburban cinder-block bar at an age when I shouldn'ta been, when I started chatting with this old guy. Talking religion and women, which usually should be avoided in bars late at night, but we had a fine time backing and forthing between games.

Long story short, we ended up partying into the wee hours at his place with his gorgeous girl friend and some of their friends, where he proceeded to show me his collection of gold records because until then I hadn't the slightest clue he was that Perv Staples.

The Staple Singers -- "I'll Take You There"

So while hanging out in dodgy bars and leaving with strangers for parts unknown is not something I'd recommend unreservedly, it has always served me well.

Great sounds.

Nice tune, driftglass. Those happy faces on the album cover sum up my feelings exactly.

I'm still ecstatic today after all of that Denver magic last night. Great choice of music this evening!

Hep me, hep me now.
I've had this song bouncing around in my head for days now. I just couldn't remember who it was by.
Thanks driftglass.
awright now.......

I have always thought that Mavis Staple's voice is one of the sexiest ever..... Wonderful song...R&B as it was before disco came along and screwed it up.

Great groove! Always makes this moose happy! Especially appropriate on this day when we all have a lot to smile about. Thanks!

Oh yeah, and very cool story behind it!

Did his dad's involvement in the Talking Heads' movie True Stories ever come up?

A Change is Gonna come

Well blow me down! driftglass, that is one of the best drinking stories I have heard in ages, and I am so envious. I love, nay - OMFG I LOVE the Staples Singers.

You have the audacity, the unmitigated GALL to have been hanging out with POP STAPLES, Mr. Glass?!? Get outta here!

I've got to tell you I'm only Kelly green with envy. I was privileged to hear the Staples Singers open up one of those four- or five-act rock shows back in the Golden Age and can't for the life of me remember who else was on the bill...but Mavis was in magnificent voice and Pop looked just about proud as punch standing off to the side playing his axe. They did this song and "Respect Yourself" and several other killers, but wound up being the shortest set of the night.

Sure was the most intense, though...

Shout out to Mudshark! Sister Re has ALWAYS done me right, Citizen! My very most fave, though, is this one from "Lady Soul":

She sings, plays that low-down gospel piano and also co-wrote it with Ted White!
Hear me now...

Why Thank You Angel,
Here's a little more Aretha.

And thank YOU! That fine lady has been tearing me up for about 40 years now; definitely the Queel of Soul...

Well then, if you like dat. Try some o dis.
Yellow Moon, The Neville Brothers.

Keep it coming driftglass. How about some MIghty Hannibal???

oops. Sorry for the repeat. I'm on a lake and perhaps there is a problem with the slow connection factor.

cheers.

Us Stereolab fans are like so ignored.

Heh.

They are one of my touchstones of university life.
