Nice choice. Keep Me In Your Heart still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up in a good way.

I Miss Warren every day.

Caught Zevon's act many years ago, University of Florida Bandshell. An incredible show. RTHTG is one of my all-time favorite tunes.

From one fan to another.

TPRA

i have a feeling people will be using one of his lyrics in November

"send Lawyers ,guns , and Money. The shit has hit the fan".

I miss him, too.

"How much you're supposed to enjoy every sandwich."

Warren's answer to Dave's question on what his illness has taught him.

Given the date of the show (October, 2002) Dave's personal urging, and the lyrics, was Ol' Dave trying to issue a wakeup call back then?

time time time, for another peaceful war

I caught Jackson Browne in a solo acoustic show shortly after Mr. Bad Example's passing, and he played two of his songs that night, including "Carmelita." It was outstanding, topped only by the red-staters around us hissing at Browne to "just sing" (since they couldn't handle his commentary about the absurd outcome of the '04 election).

Still got Randy Newman . . .

check out my new video i made of Obama inspired folk art from around the net and tell me what you think.

RIP, Mr. Z...

I really miss Warren Zevon. I guess he's finally sleeping...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar_QsojM30k

Mr. Z. was the ENTIRE show on Letterman that night.

It's really quite something.

Just before Zevon starts singing the first time Dave almost breaks down.

All four parts of the show can be found in the side scroll if you expand the embedded clip.

.

RossK, that was indeed one hell of a show.

I miss Zevon, too. A friend of mine worked on that VH1 piece on him and his last year. I'm glad Zevon lived to see his grandkids born and acclaim for his last album.

Awesome fan-based video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5nEeHGWi6o - Ministry - Let's Go (warning, not for the faint of heart like dennis)

The McCain sleaze fest has me feeling like the guy in the video.

Ya Batocchio--

And the show where Mr. Z's son plays on Letterman was something too.

Now.....

If one wanted to go off on one kinghell tangent that is appropriate for our times in which we are now governed almost entirely by the new dumb, they just might want to watch Zevon when he is interviewed by Letterman for the first time wherein he (Zevon) starts babbling on about how he was once, briefly, the coroner of 'Pitkin County' Colorado because his friend, who was almost sheriff, asked him to do it......Dave bites on the coroner thing, but misses the reference to the good docktor.....errrrr.....sheriff entirely.

.

No doubt about it, Zevon was awesome. I think that I listen to his CD's more than any other that I own. R.I.P.

Wonderful song. So is "Sentimental Hygiene" and "Boom Boom Mancini", all from the same album.

I had the good fortune to see Warren three times. In Washington, DC (the tour when "Stand in the Fire" was recorded), Oslo, and Vancouver.

Just got home after being away from my beloved C&L all day and night. Warren Zevon, you are missed by so many of us. Thank you, driftglass.

RIP Warren, sadly missed.

I have a hunch both him and HST would have enjoyed 08 very much so.

thank you for this

i was lucky in that i got to see warren in concert in los angeles...totally brilliant

one of the most self aware artists ever

I love Warren Zevon. The album I play the most often is "Life'll Kill Ya."

"You can dream the American dream
But you sleep with the lights on
And wake up with a scream."

- from "Fistful of Rain"

And the song I want played at my funeral: "Don't Let Us Get Sick."

I went home with the waitress , the way i always do
How was i to know ? She was with Al Queda too.

"And if California sinks into the ocean, as the mystics and the statistics say it will...I predict this hotel will be standing by the time I pay my bill."

RIP

I know one thing, a razor sharp wit combined with real talent makes Zevon an artist to be treasured in memory.

How differently might we feel if we had Warren, Frank Zappa, and Jerry Garcia alive still today?

In some ways, they are the lucky ones...

RIP.

Great album. My kids know all the songs on this record; they especially love the title track. He was one of the greats, and I often think how my life would be slightly emptier without his music and words. RIP Warren. RIP HST. And, more recently, RIP Gregory McDonald.

I'm a huge Zevon fan. I saw him play a tiny club in Boston circa 1985, and it was fantastic.

Of his later records, I really like My Ride's Here, and especially the song Genius.

He thinks he'll be all right
But he doesn't know for sure
Just like every other un-indicted co-conspirator

Don't let us get sick
Don't let us get old
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice

I was fortunate enough to see Warren in a small venue in West Palm Beach in the late 90's.

I miss ya, man.

Lung cancer sucks. I know, I have it.

he was one of a kind - thanks for putting this up

One of about four songs in my life that I can still remember my first time hearing it, and never wanting it to end, is Mr. Bad Example. That transformed me from a Zevon fan to a fanatic.

Here's another Zevon line that's very applicable to the moment:

"It's the home of the brave and the land of the free...
where the less you know the better off you'll be."

-- Disorder in the House, from The Wind

Does anyone know if Stand in the Fire been rereleased as a CD yet?

Thanks.

I've lost a few people I really loved over the years, including Jim Croce. But none have I missed as much as Warren.

Way back when I was going through Infantry OSUT my brother sent me a letter which included the lyrics to RTHTG. After the line Roland raised his Thompson Gun, he didn't say a word Craig added a parenthetical note: "not surprising, given that the man has no head."

Zevon was amazing, and how he handled his illness was inspiring.

Just another thing that's great about this site, you can always count on discerning music listeners when you come here.

Stand in the Fire is arguably one of the best live rock and roll discs ever recorded, imho.

Not to sound like a shill, but it's available now on iTunes with a couple of extra tracks for 7.99.
It's been pulled a few times over the past couple of years, but well worth the purchase.

If Warren was still alive, he'd kick Kid Rock in the nuts for stealing the riff from Werewolves of London

Warren's version of "knocking on heavens door" is a tune that always brings a tear, what a wonderful song ,I miss him dearly.

*sigh*
Brings back a flood of memories....Mr. Zevon RIP...

I was in a bar when that Kid Rock song came on the 'box (again...). This rather redneck-looking younger guy in his 20s complained about hearing it again, talking about the stolen opening riff from Tom Jones! I corrected him, and he seemed genuinely interested in checking out Warren Zevon. Hope so.

Kinda OT...
I think back to the time of the late 60s and early 70s. A really heady time for those growing up during that period. Seems like things were going forward and there was no turning back. With Nixon, government was hardly transparent, yet was going to be held accountable with no official above the law. People were engaged. People saw the war in VietNam was wrong and protested - loudly and often. Rights to minorities could not be denied.

How did we arrive to today? How did our government allow itself to be hijacked? How did the populace allow this to happen? How has the bar become so low?

How and why have we become so gullible? I weep for our country. I know I won't live long enough to allow history to sort through and expose this latest chapter in US history. I can only hope that government for the people, by the people will once return. The next election is will be telling as to what direction it will take....

So nice to see not just this tribute to one of Americas greatest singer songwriters during his last performance on the Late Show with Dave Letterman, but also all the kind and well meaning responses from those who are fans and who his music inspired and touched.

Yes, Stand In The Fire has been issued as a CD, as has The Envoy. Mr. Bad Example was recently re-issued and is no longer out of print. Same with Hindu Love Gods.

Next up from Rhino Encore: the eponymous "blue" album, "Warren Zevon" - also to be issued on 180-Gram vinyl.

Don't be angry at Kid Rock. He asked for permission from the Zevon Estate, was given it and is paying royalties. He didn't "steal" it - it's a tribute.

Zevon/Browne a ticket for all times. if only only everyone knew-we got to get it together now

Thanks Lucy!

Watching this clip reminds me of the night Dave had Warren on brings back so many memories. If we miss him, can you imagine how much David Letterman misses him? He did everything he could to help Warren, both, personally and professionally--I am sure it was a profound loss for him.

As far as I am concerned, Letterman is the best--I hope he never retires. I've never met the guy, never been to a taping of his show, but he pulled me through some dark, dark times--when I suddenly lost my husband and my bout with cancer.

I miss Warren Zevon.

Funny, I just had to hear that song yesterday. :)

I think Kid rock should be ashamed of himself for using Warren's baseline rythum rift of wearwolves of london for his new song. I miss Zevon so much. His contribution to music both performing and producing will go down in history as one of the best. His music will be transcendent. Shame on you Kid Rock. You are a sell out.

Wow - I saw WZ on Letterman 20 years before this, in 1982 (NBC!), he did Werewolves. He didn't lose a beat in that 20 years, I miss him too.

WZ has been a favorite of mine since college at Michigan State in 1978. Saw him at the MSU Auditorium in 1980, during his Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School tour. His live rendition of "Jungle Work" was hilarious! (He kept sneaking up on David Landau during the song's extended end jam, and DL would "machine gun" him with his guitar whenever he got close.) A real wild man, and my all time favorite. I also remember him on Letterman in Fall 1990, stepping up to the guest mike and unexpectedly belting out "Raspberry Beret" (I ran right out and bought Hindu Love Gods!) For me, Zevon, more than anyone else, brings back that "music really matters" feeling you have when you're young enough to believe in such foolishness. Geez, life'll kill ya.

You're not paying attention, are you? There's no shame to be attached to what Kid Rock did. It's a tribute, an homage. HE'S PAYING ROYALTIES TO THE ZEVON ESTATE. He asked for permission and got it. Zevon is listed as one of the songwriters. What the hell else do you want? (OK, most of us would want WZ still alive, but that's beside the point.)

Stop bashing Kid Rock for being a stand-up guy.
