Havens at Woodstock!!! You just keep blowing me away, Mr. D. Glass, with the extent of your impeccable taste!
Richie was among the biggest inspirations for my brief-but-wonderful career as a folk musician many moons ago; his voice quite simply gives me goodbumps. I was fortunate enough to see him live at an intimate local venue and get his autograph on Mixed Bag, his very first LP...which contains the studio version of "Handsome Johnny." A splendid and humble gentleman who appreciated his fans as much as anyone I've EVER met.
surely not the GOP mr. potatohead impersonator w/ the grotesque, pus-filled jowels and the crap-filled poop sack that will embarrass america on the international stage even more so than poppy bush puking in japan..?
I was in Boulder Colo. years back walking down what used to be Pearl St.( until all traffic was ended on it for a few blocks of downtown to create the 'mall') and with street musicians, jugglers, magicians, even a tightrope act,.. name it along the strip I heard his voice, and Richie Havens' voice resonates so deeply I couldnt mistake another for his, so I found a small circle of people around him and what stood out so much for me was how totally humble he was, yes he was famous at the time but he pressed the 'street musicians' to play and was probably the loudest supporter, encouraging , clapping, and it was geniune..this guy loves people and sets himself above no one..I remain impressed..oh yeah, Richie Havens was the headliner for that weekend at the club ,Blue Note ( ?) directly behind where we were all gathered . He is PEOPLE....we need more like this soul.
Awesome. In one of the docs on the old scene, another singer said he never wanted to go on after Havens, because everyone would give him all their spare cash, and there'd be none left for later performers!

I'll never forget when I first saw this film. Blew my mind: Who was this guy? Why is his guitar so beat up? Why no back-up band? What's his foot doing?? Why does he play with his thumb over the top of the guitar neck? His voice, it just grabs you, that with the rhythm, but it's the spirit that just emanates from this guy. Amazing! No one else like him.
I saw Richie Havens and the Cream at the Shrine in Los Angeles somewhere around 67', 68. I was getting ready for the Nam and was dreaming of a time when there would be no more war. forty some years have gone by and my prayers have never been answered. Maybe Obama can make a difference.
I heard his voice recently doing a tv jingle.. (it's unmistakable.) I think it was for an insurance company. I can hear the melody but can't put the words in to remember what company he was singing for, but it's just an incredibly distinctive and beautiful voice.
I can't listen to Richie Havens because he always reminds me of Albert Brooks' bit about opening for Havens years ago. He does this chant "Richie! Richie! Richie!" which is what happened to him when he stepped on stage. Hilarious. Gotta see if I can find that.
I've always liked Richie Havens. His voice, it's like you can feel the emotion .
Here's Melissa Etheridge California.
This is for all those folks out in California. And for those who want to be here.

Many, many thanks for this...
Preview is your friend!
That's supposed to be "goosebumps," of course.
Preview is your friend...
I may have missed it, but I'd love to see some ELO. Maybe "Hold on Tight."
Or, perhaps even better, some DEVO -- say "Beautiful World."
Cheers!
One of my favs!

Richie Havens is a friend of mine,
I've known Richie Havens for over 38 years.
Gov. Palin, you're no Richie Havens
P.S.
Dear Driftglass,
Loved your Sept. 11, '08 post.
You rock.
I've loved him since seeing the film Woodstock. Along with the Beatles, Woodstock's music is MIA from iTunes.
This is the link to Driftgalass' Sept. 11, 2008 post.

Oh, yeah. Their entire catalog is incredible -- and thanks for reminding me of that gem. "Hold on" is just the song I had on my mind.
Not so much "musicians" as "multimedia artists," the spud-boys' (DEVO's) vid is...

We just interviewed Richie Havens yesterday for the purply grotto check it out: http://www.purplygrotto.com/html/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=...
A blessing if she wins. If McCain/Palin win we are cursed.
One of my absolute favorite protest songs. His album Cut To The Chase is awesome, as he does a version of Lives In The Balance.
Say, mudshark, that is a fine Etheridge ditty.
Yup, every so often I do a little California dreaming too :)
