Actually, Superbowl XLIII will be February 1, 2009 in Tampa Bay, not in January. Just a "small" mistake on bluegal's part.

To GOPh8r @ 3,

When the rumor first came up that Bruce and the E Streeters were going to play the Super Bowl my reaction was close to yours, but my brother had a different take on it. As he pointed out, the man is close to 60 years old, he still puts on the highest energy level concerts in the business, and gives it everything he's got every night. He no longer has anything to prove to anyone, so if he wants to play the Super Bowl, he should do it. If nothing else, half-time will be worth watching for once.

I grew up on Punk Rock and Bruce Springsteen. I was at least 19 before I was told there was a difference. I still don't buy it. This man is America cut to the bone.

off topic (ie, not springsteen, but incredibly hip), here's joan osborne & the funk bros. doing what becomes of the broken hearted at skippy.

the funk brothers were the house band of session musicians that were heard on most all of the early detroit motown records. this video, with the amazing joan osborne joining the band, is from the great documentary about the musicians who made up the funk brothers, called standing in the shadow of motown.

Phoenix Justice, maybe bluegal meant they would be playing an inaugural ball? :)

*February* The 2008-9 SuperBowl is on February 1st.

Bears vs. ??????

@djstn Right there with ya. I'm a Philly girl (living in Texas). Punk (like groove) is in the soul, and Bruce has it.

The best -- the BEST -- rock concert I ever attended was Springsteen, who projected energy into the upper reaches of the stadium. What a showman! He will be known as the best Super Bowl halftime show ever. And what a conscience. A h/t to The Smiths @ 4 for "Cone of Silence" with great but underrated Pittsburgh rocker Joe Grushecky.

Mick Jagger knew the score in 1974.

So Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones are lame too? PFFFTTTTHHHH.

"...baby there's no doubt, down here, we ain't gonna take what they're handing out. When I'm out on the street, I talk the way I wanna talk..."

I'm with ya there. Springsteen can still rock the house.

Go Nils.

How can you mend a broken heart?

Love that vintage Ric Nils is playing here. Hope he brings his trampoline to the Supe!

Springsteen singing Dylan - most appropriate for these days. Reminds us of all the freedoms we've lost during the past 8 years.

Re: GOPh8r @ 3

Ironically, so many of these entertainers cultivate this image of eschewing corporatism/commercialism, then hungrily feed at the trough right along with the rest of the pigs. Just as long as they make enough snarky comments about Bush/Republicans, their adoring fans don't seem to notice, mind or care.

Graham Nash recently showing up on American Idol is a prime example of such extreme hypocrisy. The incredible thing is there are still a few people gullible enough to actually fall for a phony anti-establishment shtick coming from multimillionaires.

peaceful easy feeling:

Springsteen walks it like he talks it. His respect for the working class and their struggles are reflected in his art, his words, and his actions. I haven't seen too many millionaires donating so heavily towards feeding the hungry in this country as Springsteen; google it. And it is not just $ or concert tickets, I have personally seen him and his kids work 8-10 hours packing and stacking boxes at a local food bank on numerous occassions. So how much time and money to you donate to providing a meal to children who would otherwise go hungry in the richest country in history of the world?

Ironically, if you don't know what you're talking about, just STFU.

Who cares if he endorses Obama, they're both overrated.

I was there for this show, amazing show, focused heavily on the River album!

Can't wait for Bruce to support his state's team at halftime, when the Giants repeat as champs.

Good christ that's awful. Just one more example of the fall of Western Civilization.

Hell Yeah! The Boss, The Super Bowl! Hell Yeah!

Re: t-bone @ 29

Springsteen may be volunteering some of his time, but I have found no evidence he's put up any serious amount of cash to establish any charitable foundations. Keep in mind these benefit concerts, etc. have a nice PR payback for the celebrities involved. If the man is making huge sacrifices, the evidence is just not there.

As for me? On top of 10 hours/week of volunteer work, there's a nice 5-figure sum per year going to the likes of World Vision and Feed the Children, amongst others.

And you?
