C&L's Late Night Music Club with Hall & Oates
This song, a blue-eyed soul slow jam, was released as the single off of Hall & Oates third lp, Abandoned Luncheonette in 1974 to little success...But after Tavares had at #1 hit with it on the soul charts in the same year (Lou Rawls also recorded it in '74), and the success of Hall & Oates Sara Smile in 1975, Atlantic Records re-released She's Gone in '76, seeing it hit #7 on the pop charts.
I'm not a big fan of Blondie & The 'Stache's pop-ier, chart-topping hits of the '80s, but this earlier work...Well, it keeps me from begrudging them the success they had later.

I love their music.
Thank you, Andy!
Yeah, I remember this song - it was during the great shirt button shortage of the early '70's.

Yet, no one has ever accused me of being obnoxious, it sort of comes naturally.

Tavares / It Only Takes a Minute Girl.. .like from Soul Train !? Nice.
'74 ... all of us kids were playing B-ball in our Chuck Taylors and listening the The Chi-Lites and The Spinners ...
Didnt even know they did Shes Gone .. a little Ernie Isley guitar going on ... but its funny, THIS is what I kind of thought this song should have sounded like all along. Hmmmm.
EDIT: Of course ... there is a clip from Soul Train

Hall & Oates were Philly guys- they met at Temple in the late '60s- so they were around that scene as Philly Soul was becoming popular. Doesn't surprise me at all that someone would have heard the song and suggested that Tavares cover it.

yep ...those early tunes were great.
And I was crazy about Gamble & Huff before I had ever actually heard the story of who they really were ( if someone hasnt made a documentary about them ... they should! )

great stuff! Smokey and Daryl Hall in the same week; fabulous songwriters.

Daryl and Smokey together.
. . . at my Red Line subway stop after work in Chicago; he went by the name of "Maverick." He was one of those performers who doesn't really know very many songs, but the ones that he did know he did really well. He got more than a few bucks of mine playing Sarah Smile once he found out that I enjoyed the way he did it.
I heard his voice in my head almost as soon as I read "Hall & Oates." Well, his was actually the second voice in my head. The first was my own saying: "Hall & Oates? Huh? Last night was Hendrix!"
But you're right, Andy. There was some good stuff early on.

And why couldn't I stop watching? Even when Sailing kicked in? It was like a slow motion train wreck.
I need an eraser. Bad.
I saw this guy at Britt Music Festival in Southern Oregon; after the show he hopped on a plane to play Obama's primary victory celebration in Denver. Those were some happy days.

I've linked it here quite a bit in the past, The guy who plays McDonald, J.D. Ryznar, also the writer and director of the "series", is my first cousin (his mom, Kitty, is John O'Toole's 12th child, my mom, Molly, is his 11th- of 16).
He did the Yacht Rock series for channel101.com , then joined some of the channel101ers to do the short-lived AcceptableTV on VH1 a few years ago (J.D. wrote and the directed Homeless James Bond there- sorry, no linky), and has been writing for Blue Mountain State on Spike for a while.

Man, I miss southern Oregon. This would have been even funnier there - especially around late October early November.

But I'll watch out for more . . . and I'm still not quite sure why :)
It's cool to know I've only got two degrees of separation from the work. Funny stuff.

...the channel101 universe:
House of Cosbys (episode 1)
That's from Justin Roiland, the guy who played Christopher Cross in Yacht Rock. Roiland has a terribly whacked out sense of humor, one not shared with the real Bill Cosby, who forced channel101 to yank the series. Roiland really does love Cosby. Too bad Dr, Huxtable just didn't get it.

I just didn't know about channel101. I guess I'm just not hip enough anymore, but I try to stay with it and keen. Twenty three skiddoo?
I love this planet. Something new every day - even if it's only new to me. Thanks.

Cheb Mami & K-Mel - Parisien Du Nord
(yes, I know Cheb Mami is in prison for a terrible act...if I could have found Generation Rap's version of the song, I would have posted it instead)

Duet with Elvis Costello - The Only Flame In Town
Until you respect the citizenship of those with which you disagree, you're not a true American.
I can't really hear him on that tune. Yeah, I hear him, but it doesn't seem like a duet. He seems more like a background singer.
Another band I didn't like when they came out but respect now. Plus what's his name had one helluva pornstache.
Generally speaking I don't trust anyone making over 150K a year.
Has anybody heard his 1977 solo album Sacred Songs? It was his first solo album, produced by the incomparable maestro Robert Fripp, and was so revolutionary that RCA Records refused to release it because the execs thought it would alienate Hall & Oates' more malleable audience. Hall and Fripp came very close to forming a regular act.
The back cover had a photo of a smiling Hall coming out of a vault with an armload of tapes.
Yes, I picked it up when it was first released on CD in the late 90's...great from start to finish.
I was & still is more of a King Crimson fan than a H&O fan, but I knew the combination of Hall's vocals & Fripp's guitar was something I had to listen to (even Fripp in the liner notes of the CD stated that Hall was the best singer/vocalist he had ever worked or played with).
Hall returned the favor and sang almost an albums's worth of vocals on Fripp's 'Exposure' solo album the next year. Unfortunately, Hall's record label & management freaked out & nixed the album, Fripp had to bring in different singers to recut the tracks (I think the last re-release of Exposure was an expanded version with both the Hall & non Hall tracks)
This is good. The '80's stuff was mostly horrible. I loved Hall's solo album Sacred Songs.
