Title: Pushin' Too Hard
Artist: The Seeds

Overlooked yesterday- due to the media coverage of the deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett- was the passing of Sky Saxon, the bassist and lead singer of the psychedelic garage rock icons The Seeds.. Not quite a one-hit-wonder (along with Pushin' Too Hard, the band also scored a minor hit with Can't Seem To Make You Mine), the band was once touted by American blues great Muddy Waters as, "America's own Rolling Stones." The original band fell apart shortly after their early successes, but Saxon continued fronting different incarnations of the band for revival tours into this decade. Godspeed to one of the great names in rock 'n' roll.

Dirty Water

For those of you wondering why the drummer is getting so much face-time in this vid, it's probably because he's Dick Dodd (not Cubby O'Brien), one of the original Mouseketeers.

Shades of my youth, Andy!

"What was I, an overfed, long-haired, leaping gnome, doing as the star of a Hollywood movie?"

That's just mean. We can't buy the stuff in Korea. Very very illegal!!! I always feel in need of some herb, but... It really sucks.

Them, Gloria.

Here comes the night.

at the end of the Seed’s organ player’s solo on this tune.
Here is the original Ajax laundry detergent ad – “Stronger than Dirt”.

Jerry Garcia and the boys also snuck this riff in once in a while.

In the early 80's my hard rock band (all women) did a cover of this song for a video, quite close if I do say so. I have to laugh because during the guitar solo the camera goes to the singer's bass picking on this clip. No cords/amps required.

I've not heard of him before, but he made great music.

My gosh, "Pushin' Too Hard" shoud be on every music aficianado's list. Absolutely ground-breaking rock song. I heard the Doors' "Break on Through" today and it occurrd to me that "Pushin' to Hard" predates it by at least a couple years. Very similar songs.

Sky

This is one of my favorite songs evah!!! I got to see Sky Saxon ROCK at a show in Vegas a few years back and, I must say it was awesome to hang out and party with a true-blue rock and roll legend. He was still a wacky 60s wild child, but I had the time of my life. NUTS.

I always get the Seeds mixed up with the Leaves, here performing 'Hey Joe'.

Must be something about those 60s drug bands.

Oh yeah! That is awesome! Thanks.

Wow,

Tell me the guitar part doesn't sound a bit like this:

MC5

I didn't know he'd been around all these years. Hope he had a good tour while he was here. RIP.

Some of us didn't.

He lived his life in the fast lane if somewhat slowly. I knew the man only a little but I loved his music to this day. I saw The Seeds as a 15 year-old in Montreal and they killed. I lived that first album and still do. It sounded to my teenaged ears like ti was recorded in some cave in some rocking heaven. It still does. The Seeds and Sky Saxon are the epitome of deranged, yet lovely music. Sky has not gone away, he still exists in that exclusive cave of rock and roll in my heart.

Kudos to Crooks and Liars for recognizing Sky. But where is Howie Klein? Did he deny Sky like the rest of the record industry?

BTW, Sky was not a bassist. That was only for photo ops. Carole Kaye and Harvey Sharpe of the so-called Wrecking Crew did the bass parts. Listen the fuzz bass on "Fallin' in Love" from the first album and be amazed.

Lost a 70s icon. Lost an 80s icon. Somehow Ed McMahon almost seemed more 50s in his style than 60s.

"Pushin' too Hard" was a distinctive and memorable American 60s hit.

I was there the last night he played 6/20/09 at Antones with shapes have fangs and have video of his final performance.
