Late Night Music Club with Eric B. and Rakim
By Andy K Monday Nov 10, 2008 8:00pmLost in the shuffle between New York's old school hip-hop artists and the new L.A. "Gangsta" scene, 1987 brought us this righteous rap of a man giving up the thug life to go legit. Rakim's rhymes are backed by one of the hardest beats imaginable, sprinkled with samples including Bogie, Don Pardo and Ofra Haza; it's a veritable smorgasbord of sound!
(Extra love from me if you can name all of the samples used on this track. Or even just one or two! )

hey you forgot Don Pardo, Metropolis and Bogart!!
Say, wasn't Don Pardo the SNL announcer guy? And what is a sample?
... questions, questions ...
awesome...
Eric B. is President...
Good one. That looks like some homework there.
The only one I was sure of was Dennis Edwards, although Salsoul sounds right.
Along with Erik B. and Rakim , there were others around the same era that changed my life:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGgPz_pag2o - EPMD - Crossover
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRrM6tfOHds - A Tribe Called Quest- Check the Rhyme
My favorite Erik B and Rakim quote is:
"It's not where you are from, it's where you are at."
My favorite Erik B and Rakim quote is:
"Take seven emcee's put 'em a line
and add seven more brothas who think they can rhyme
well it will take seven more before I go for mine
now that's twenty-one emcee's ate up at the same time"
and the best Rakim line ever:
She thought I was a doughnut and tried to glaze me!
It's the 80's all over again people for reasons like a recession and people standing up for social injustices. Hip-hop is one of several cultural things that has propelled an African-American into the White House. We still have a ways to go on permitting gay marriage, but there can be no doubt now that we will get there.
"It's not where you are from, it's where you are at."
That line is still so true today. Just think about Obama's life story.

That's some good stuff right there.
This is the Coldcut remix, but considered by almost everyone to be the best version of this song.
This song was given to the Coldcut guys because of the success of MARRS "Pump up the Volume" made that same year.
It is on record that Erik B & Rakim hated this mix.
probably because Coldcut removed most of the lyrics
I was always partial to SOM's No Man's Land

As well as Del's No Need for Alarm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke7hRdpYw1I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouULoYHqRk4&NR=1
And a little more of Rakim just for good measure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVCQZcgzp4E
...has to be on Soul Train, after they performed, Don Cornelius was interviewing Rakim, who was not smiling at all:
DC: Why so serious son?
R: Cuz I ain't no joke.
Classic stuff.
Hilarious
I was just watching Eric B. is President a few hours earlier tonight. Good choice. Eric B and Rakim are some of hip-hop's greatest veterans.
A site I've been working on at my full-time job during the past few months has gone live today: http://onefreedom.org/
because this is the Coldcut remix of "Paid in Full" (incidentally their first hit, back in '87), and the original, while still containing skillful rhymes (more than in this remix), had few samples.
Here are some more original highlights of Coldcut's career: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldcut
"Beats+Pieces" (1987): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG7e2HKRHL0
"Natural Rhythm" w/ Hexstatic (1996): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iEJhTrGCyw

"Revolution '08" (2008): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Lz264wOAg
This reminds me, if you haven't done a C&L Late Nite Music Club with Coldcut, you should do so just because of "Revolution '08"; I mean it's far from their best but it's more relevant to this blog: http://revolution08.us/
I hope C&L showcases more Ninja Tune talent; Amon Tobin anyone?

Everytime I think I'm lonely someone "cause" on me.
Excuse me while I kiss this guy! :-)
the last I heard you were *BANNED* from here. ;-)
I never thought it was permanent. :-)

It's Remembrance Day and the moon is almost full. Thanks for your great tunes this evening.
Good night and peace to all.
No prob., but I still wonder, are we still that different???? Do we really see things so different as our leaders would want us to???? -
http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/165203/
but no, we're not different people at all. We are all human beings who just want to be happy while we muddle through it all.
Though more than one person has tried to turn me onto Southpark, I'm saddened that I haven't been able to do the same 4 U, Calg., ...
Time for zeds now. Good night, Stanley, and sleep well :)
Great choice! Haven't heard this in years!
IMHO, the greatest rap song is "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me'! by Geto Boys.
Yo, Willie D!
I am white and I have never had so much hope for this country!
Thinkin' of a master plan!
But Ain't Got No Class by Da Lynch MOb is another kickass rap...though kinda obsure.
Speakin of obscure...any of you cats ever listen to The Goats?
I'll see if I can find somethin for yas...brb.
Not a track I'm familiar with...
And I got no speakers at work...so don't hate on me too bad if it sucks.

Corny but true! Ask Obama.
Even as Cujo, A true genre blender. I love old skool beats, because you could still sample like a madman back then, but the meter for the rapping was mostly square and stale. Tribe broke that up and changed things. Then everybody started getting sued over samples. Now we have Korg based bling rap. ugh.
I loves me some Eric B and Rakim!!!
Lyrics of Fury is one of the most BAD ASS raps ever!
All this talk about the old skool makes me wish DS would step up with another album. There is so much for him to talk about. I still listen to his last album regularly, and it never fails to please the ears.
So who says "goodnight kids" at the very end? Somebody from a crappy sitcom?
and the world famous supreme team
