C&L's Late Night Music Club with Beyoncé
By Howie Klein Sunday Nov 23, 2008 8:00pmDecember 5th is the release date for the film, Cadillac Records, the story of the most legendary of all American record labels, Chicago's Chess Records. Chess was founded in 1950 and it's address, 2120 So. Michigan Avenue, was immortalized by a Rolling Stones song of the same name. The label was the home of a breathtaking list of artists including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Memphis Slim, Jimmy Rogers, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, The Flamingos, Chuck Berry, the Moonglows, Bo Diddley, Etta James, The Dells, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Fontella Bass, Moms Mabley...
The film was written and directed by Darnnell Martin and stars Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess, Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, Mos Def as Chuck Berry, and Beyoncé as Etta James. The trailer is here.
And here's Beyoncé's cover of the classic Etta James song, "At Last," which will be released as the soundtrack's first single in two weeks.
Bonus question: why is the film called Cadillac Records?

What a beautiful voice Beyonce has and what a gorgeous song that is. Just lovely.
Thank you, Howie!
here's the original w/chuck berry doing rock n roll music @ skippy.
also, in honor of the am. music awards tonite, here's nominee alicia keys w/jack white (of the same color-stripes) doing the theme song from quantum of solace, another way to die.
That was fabulous, skippy!
I like Jack White, and I never cared much for Alicia Keys, but this is BY FAR the worst James Bond song in the history of the franchise- even worse than Rita Coolidge singing "All Time High" for Octopussy in 1983. "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell (from the last movie, "Casino Royale") is the best one ever, and this piece of tripe suffers abominably in comparison.
Alicia Keys is terrible, and in my opinion, always has been.
Jack White should have known better.
"live and let die" by wings?
or "casino royale" by herb alpert & the tiajuana brass?
You betta sang biotch!!!! LOL
I had the pleasure and privilege of working with Etta, live and in studio, for 25 years and was her music director for 2 years in the late '80s. She's one of the all-time greats.
Leonard Chess began his label by seeling records out of the back of his...Cadillac.
Because the Chess brothers started out selling records from the back of their Cadillac. I'm looking forward to this film!
At a guess I'd say because they used to sell their records out of the back of a Cadillac ?

Not a fan of Beyonce at all. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. And not a fan of this cover at all. I'm sure it will be all over the radio soon enough. Couldn't sit through the entire Dreamgirls movie. I hope this film is better.
Funny how this song reminds me of wedding receptions since it has become a staple at such events. It's a great song.

GNA!
Lennon must laugh his ass off in heaven. (Sorry.)
...and I do like Beyonce a lot (which surprises me but there ya' go) but I'm still an Etta fan at the end of the day.
Beyoncé?
What's next, a thread on the Pussycat Dolls?
Sorry to say, but this new generation of R&B singers simply suck. Emphasizing the shallow and the extremely artificial, this present day collection of "soul" singers(Beyonce, Alicia Keyes, etc.) are in desperate need of their own personalities(and more talent). These ladies couldn't bring a diet coke to Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Regina Belle, etc.
for stating that I looooooves me some Beyonce!
Also...almost every single James Bond song ever made is gawd-awful...
Even?

Chess buys them a Cadillac when they record their first hit record.
Muddy Waters
"Still a Fool"
Seems to have been prescient, considering the lyric "been Ayn Randed," which Americans were with Alan Greenspan's insane economics founded upon a NOVELIST'S WHACKO IDEAS; and the lyric about thinking the phone's been tapped. Paul Simon, you saw 40 years into the future, and it isn't pretty here.
leftandleft, I agree, with exeptions.
I call it the Tyranny of Rock and Roll. Artists, to be heard, have to play music a certain way, otherwise they'll never be "big." Alicia Keys and Beyonce came up in a era and genre where virtuosity took a backseat to image and the ability to rap. Alicia Keys may still be constrained that way.
Beyonce is one hell of a singer. But I can think of a couple of soul singers that stick to the proper form: Winehouse and Alele.

She has destroyed every cover she's done. Whoever gave her permission to screw up Rose Royce Wishing On a Star needs to have their ghetto pass revoked. She cannot dance or act. So why is she one of the richest entertainers around? Happened under GWB's watch, just like 9/11. Beyonce has no soul, it's empty, like her head. I'm insulted even looking at her.
So whatchoo think of this'un?
