Also fitting for an obit I think.

Ah Skynyrd and Kansas. Couple of my childhood favorites.

I took a wrong turn somewhere. Don't know what influenced me to come up with these songs.

Good man gone, all too soon.
Hard life for that band.

I loved and love them all.
Southern Rock, fine, fine stuff.

Namaste, Billy.

Someone at work mentioned to me yesterday that another member of this great band had passed. I guessed it was Billy Powell. I don't know why. Maybe because there are so few of the original band left. Maybe Gary Rosington is the only one now.

I was a freshman at UW Oshkosh when "Pronounced..." was released. my next door neighbor in our dorm was from Rockford, IL and he put this vinyl on the turntable and man did we rock for EVER. Smokin' dope, speeding through finals (remember white cross?), trying to make class, and trying even harder to get laid. We had Skynard, Allman Bros., Jeff Beck, James Gang, Deep Purple, ELP, and all in their prime. Shit those were magical times. They are a part of who I am. What happened to that band was tragic. The loss of Van Zant, Steve Gaines et al was just a crime. Those guys taught me that being a simple man was nothing to be ashamed of.

RIP Billy. You put out some excellent licks on the keyboards. You will live on in the memories of all those who rocked to your work.

Somehow fitting, I guess...

Drummer and plane crash survivor/hero Artimus Pyle is also still alive. RIP Billy; play it pretty for wherever you are now.

... another Old Hippie Night at the LNMC!

Well, geez, I was there when Skynard was new, so how can I not? And I've played so many of their songs thousands of times in bar bands, but none more than this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMTn0_PL6d8

Nice post lafin. Hillman's son is one of my best friends and a damn fine musician as well.

more respectability to the Union Jack than the KKK or any southern hick could ever dream of. It is americans like these for which the south may claim some semblance of traditional US values.

Rock on.

As I southerner, I have to correct you.

The Union Jack is the British flag. The Conferate Flag is known as "The Stars and Bars"

Not that I condone a lot of what the flag has come to mean, but I do have some blood that died under it...so...you know...As you said, Rock ON.

Danny's song by Loggins and Messina

I loved Loggins & Messina. I used to have that album and when it got stolen along with a stack of other great LPs that I owned, I was heartbroken. Listening to those songs sure brings back memories.

Lynyrd Skynyrd music got played lots too. I am sad to hear of Billy Powell's death. RIP.

I got to meet Billy when my cousin played drums with them in the 90's.
Billy was one of the nicest people I have met and a great keyboard player. It is a sad day for us,.... but perhaps a happy one for Ronnie and the rest who have left this world.

Lord, I love Skynyrd. Always have, always will. They are truly one of the great Rock and Roll Bands of all time and they should have been in the HoF long before they finally got in.

Billy just smoked on the piano and with Stevie Gaines, they were totally rejuvenated. Another great singer/songwriter/guitar player to compliment Ronnie and mesh with Allen and Gary. The guitar parts on "That Smell" are brilliant.

That said, they've gotta call it a day now. Let it Be. Don't beat it into the ground.

Thank you, Dread Pirate.

I can't recall ever hearing him sing before. I liked that.

Keith ought to do an album of standards - some country, some old jazz tunes. I bet he'd do a great job singing some Kurt Weill songs.

thx for the link, blue gal.

for my tribute i posted a live version (oakland, july 4, 1977) of freebird w/a great solo by billy @ about 3 minutes in.

Another member of Lynyrd Skynyrd passed.

I don't care who ya are, if you are over ten years old, you have have heard Billy Powell play the piano and he was a master.

Thanks fer the Hat Tip BG.
Another great soul has left a mark.

Free Bird, Fly Again.

Busted

but this band didn't need any more tributes. As the video shows, they can't play and they can't play together. RIP, no disrespect, but jeez.

The band may not have been the best around at the time, but I did get the chance to meet and play a bit of music with this guy, quaff a few beers. Him on piano, me on Hammond, it was fun. It was only once.

This guy knew barrelhouse piano stuff and played it well, a right jolly bloke, and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Respects.
