Title: Plush [plugged and unplugged]
Plugged:

Unplugged:

In this instance, I actually like the plugged version of "Plush" better.

Which songs sound better to you unplugged, or plugged, and why?

It's a music-only open thread.

PS Massive Attack fans, don't miss the concert from last Thursday (two hours of free music!) at our sister site, Newstalgia. [Massive Attack recorded the theme music for House, MD, by the way.]

Yes

Both are great, but I prefer the unplugged version.

Plugged always, there is no kick in unplugged, too many unplugged songs become a touchy feely guitar strumming thing.

There's no Duane Allman on the unplugged version. It's not even close to the same song, because the arrangement is all different. I like the piano "coda" in the original.

As far as Plush goes, I like it both ways. I'm not a big STP fan, but I like that song by them.

Until you respect the citizenship of those with which you disagree, you're not a true American.

Unplugged version should burn in commercial hell along with that cashing-in geezer.

As instrumentalists, they were all fair-to-middlin'. Yeah, even Brian, who's a genius as a song writer, arranger and producer, but not necessarily a virtuoso musician.

I'm not quite sure at what point in their history it began, but other than Brian, most of the Beach Boys were on the road as the instrumental tracks were being recorded. It was definitely in full effect by the time the Pet Sounds sessions began. Brian had already started experiencing panic attacks, so he was off the road while Murray Wilson kept the rest of the Boys on the road (and the money rolling in). They'd be out for a few weeks as Brian laid down tracks with studio musicians (the credits read like a Who's Who of the Wrecking Crew), then they'd come home, learn the vocal arrangements, lay down the vocal tracks and hit the road again.

layla plugged
Layla - Live 1984 - Derek And The Dominos

layla unplugged

Eric Clapton Layla Original

layla unplugged is a terminally putrid ball-less travisty of a cover that needs to die. the song is supposed to be a fusion of clapton's own desperate longing to get into the pants of the then wife of beatle george harrison and an ancient iranian love tragedy about a girl named layla. the unplugged cover expressed none of the anguish, or longing, instead it's a puerile, mewling gutted fish.

real_earl's picture

thank you.

hated been bored with "Layla" (boredom is worse than hatred, of course...). I never really cared much for Clapton, to be honest, 'till I saw him come out and guest with Little Feat (!!) in Costa Mesa (CA) about 12 or so years ago.

lenny bruce pretty much hit the nail on the head with his oft repeated jibe at clapton that he'd been "de-balled" in his playing and his performing had muddied it's fire by his being seduced by acoustic and "fusion" interests, rather than concentrating on what bruce thought were his strengths, his rock roots.

fastfeat's picture

Lowell George--YES (sadly...)

Eric Clapton--not so much...

I'm not a huge Clapton fan either but I love the Layla album. The combination of Clapton and Allman was an amazing collaboration.

Drowned (from Quadrophenia)

I prefer the unplugged version. Conveys the sense of isolation, which is sorta the theme of the song in the first place.

I remember this performance back when MTV played actual music. Stone Temple Boneheads at the top of their game. From that era I still prefer Nirvana's performance the best. All the performances were spot on especially with the Meat Puppets' covers. All three versions better than the originals.
