i just think thier theme song from the movie the black dalia was worth the money ,

One of my favorite books, completely ruined.

To be fair, Ellroy wrote the book to be unfilmable, and he says that DePalma's original edit of the film was really good. But that's not the cut I bought two tickets for.

Lola Getz's picture

Loved the book, loathed the film. In fact, I didn't even make it all the way through the movie, but I'd happily read the book again.

Cool For Cats.
Hey, miss_kitty, are you listening?

Hamilton...wow....

Two questions:

1). Is that Stacy Peralta narrating?

2). Is Curren really that old? I mean, he looks like he's probably in great shape, but I didn't realize he was that...well, you know...

mudshark's picture

Pat. He was one of the pioneers of the North Shore.
I don't know if it's Peralta. I ran across him when I was around 15. He was a dick then, ended up in prison and I think it screwed up his head. But I hear he's doing ok now. well, when this came out at least. He did do some surf flick work though.

But are you confusing Peralta with one of the other Z-Boys? Peralta always gets tagged as the sane one of those guys. He had his shit together and started Powell-Peralta when he was, like, 20. Jay Adams has been in a whole lotta trouble, and Alva wasn't perfect.

But if you say so....

mudshark's picture

They were a group of guys back then.
Peralta was the hottest of them all.
Alva wasn't too bad. He ripped as well.
But Peralta was the first to do the huge half pipes. Actually, they were giant pipes for storm drainage. Probably over 15ft high.
I fergit. It was a long time ago.

But back then, we were all dicks.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Andy K's picture

He was the one to first start pulling air in the pools they were skating. Not saying Peralta was bad...The things that group was doing had never been done before...But it was Alva who was paid to endorse skate equipment before the rest of 'em, with good reason. Shit, Alva was still the real deal in the mid-'80's as a skater, long after Peralta started making and selling decks.

mudshark's picture

But those giant pipes were another.
I broke my tailbone doing airs in a pool. I forgot I was in a pool.ouch. .
But those giant pipes were intimidating.
And Peralta went way above and beyond.
Skating was alot of fun. But when you got hurt, you couldn't surf. After that, I used it as a mode of transportation.
And then, after a long period of time, came Hawk. That guy was/is something else.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Andy K's picture

...in that they are the guys who are just so far out there beyond anyone else who does what they do. Cobb and Ruth were great at their game, but they had contemporaries who could best them in a given year. Ditto Jim Brown.

IMO, anyway.

Tubes - No Way Out

Wanted no mercy, but no joy on that front :(

grs's picture

Especially for what was already brewing and yet to come in the 90's. They never really tossed anything out that spoke to me.

Andy K's picture

I never thought they were as good as the professional critics said they were. Take Me I'm Yours, Tempted and Black Coffee In Bed are all really good pop songs, imo, but other than that...Meh.

Lola Getz's picture

To this day I can't go past Clapham Junction railway station without having the words "Clapham" and "junction" start running through my head, all because of that song. Doesn't matter that the song itself isn't about trains, it's just seeing those two words together and then, boom, I'm humming "Up the Junction." Funny how the mind works.

Great song though.

J.D. Ryznar wrote, directed and starred (as Michael McDonald)in that "series" from channel101.com.

Here's J.D. as Homeless James Bond, when the channel101 people got their own show on VH1 a few years ago- Acceptable.tv.
