C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Fishbone
"Party at Ground Zero" is probably the single best party song ever written.
I met these guys when they came on tour through Missoula, Montana, back in 1986. That was fairly early in their careers and they were young and incredibly agile onstage; it was, in fact, one of the most wildly entertaining shows I could remember seeing. Of course, we didn't exactly get top-tier acts in Missoula, but I've seen a lot of shows since then, and it was great. They were also very approachable, unlike a lot of musicians. They were huge Frank Zappa fans, it seems -- and it shows up in their musicianship.

That's the kind of bass-playing I like to do. Never heard of this band before; what a blast!

i wish these guys would play the innaugeration....if obama is a fan (and he should be as he is my age) i will love him forever
Agreed. I just posted several songs from them about a week ago on the LNMC.
Classic stuff.
But they're so addicting it's great to introduce them to people who haven't heard.
There are some people who might say that Lyin' Ass Bitch isnt the greatest song of all-time...but they would be wrong...and should die....peace out
That was fun.

Apparantly The Residents are so mysterious no one really knows who any of them are.

Snakefinger used to play with them, but he's dead now. I think my friend Ken knew him.

I always have to many tabs open. I tried to edit my post but it said "access denied" for some reason. I meant to post the wiki def of these guys:

Very cool that you knew someone who played with them. Holy shit.
He grew up in London, and music clubbing and shmoozing the acts was/is the thing he loves most, along with the music. He has an amazing music collection and has loads of great stories. At one point, he was managing Elvis Costello, back in the way back, when his band was a pub band.
I met Ken and Mary in the 90s and their daughter was 5. She's just finished up her course at York and moved on to City College in London to do her masters degree. She writes music reviews. She told Mary "I just want to do what we did when I was little. Go to clubs and hang out with the bands afterward."

Amazing. I happen to know another C&Ler who had a hand in managing Elvis Costello. Wonder if you ever crossed paths.
She told Mary "I just want to do what we did when I was little. Go to clubs and hang out with the bands afterward."
Wow. Myself, I wouldn't have minded that kind of upbringing but that is through the eyes of a grown up. ;)
But I'll stick with PFunk.
I first heard them in the John Cusack and Tim Robbins movie, "Tapeheads".
Loved them ever since.
Another thought on Fishbone (since I can still edit): they always reminded me of Madness for their mix of Ska into other elements, for their use of brass within the group, and for their excellence as musicians. Their senses of humor were also very similar.

Truly sad. One of the most underrated and influential bands out there. Fishbone was like manna from heaven for many a young black punk such as I was. I remember the 'Monsters of Funk' tour where they performed with a little known act named the Red Hot Chili Peppers, some of you may have heard of them. Alas the Chili Peppers went on to superstardom and Fishbone faded into obscurity, except to those in the know. Next time I have a drink I will make libations to Fishbone, the band that spawned hope in many an angry young negro. Do the rock star!
i was there...i saw it happen
and i think fishbone faded as they lost their funk roots
I lived in Hollywood from 88-90 and it was common to run into them and the Peppers on weeknights at the Cat and Fiddle and other joints. They are extraordinary musicians and performers.
A band I was in back in the early 90's called Retarted (intentionally misspelled) Elf got to play with them a couple of times in Texas and Angelo was cool enough to sit in with our horns (on a massive bass sax) on one of the gigs.
must be cool.
I don't post here often, but I am consistently impressed by the breadth and depth and quality of the music featured. And Fishbone is a great example. I first saw them in Boulder in '87 with some friends who had never seen a punk show, let alone the overdrive power ska these guys put out. Halfway through the show, I hoisted my best friend, Johnny Rev, onto the packed, moshing crowd in front of us and he was gone. For the rest of the song and into the next he surfed his way in a big arc to the front of the stage, politely excused himself as he walked from stage right to stage left, fell back onto the hands of the crowd and eventually was deposited where he started. He was a changed man.
These guys have it all. It's too bad they didn't make it bigger; they deserve the rewards.
with such rich description. Love it.
(ps, love the name Jimbodacious - freaking awesome)
I was going through my music today and was stunned to see that the South African reggae icon, Lucky Dube, had been murdered in October in an apparant carjacking somewhere in the out-of-control suburbs of Johannesburg. He was such a hero to so many. The indifference of it all is amazing. Poverty is violence.

All, right! I loved that song, back in the 80's. And quite curiously, despite that time having been the heyday of music videos and all, I never saw this one. Thanks so much for sharing!! (I cranked up the volume so much that my cat, warming herself next to my computer, scooted out of the room - heh).
Cheers!

I'm so sorry I missed it. I just posted you back about the rude posters. Don't worry! :)
Here we have the super blimped-out, sick and wrong ego of Michael Jackson taking a last shot of it in the U.K. where people still gave a shite in 1996 and look what happens. Not very well known here in the U.S. but an iconoclastic moment in the U.K.
Here you have M.J. totally out of touch, acting as if he is the fucking Messiah with little children and old people at his feet and hear comes Jarvis Cocker. I love it. Everytime.

I recently lived in a house with a former Fishbone member. I need to call him and schedule a jam.
as much as I wish I had the time 4.
But I have a few rough mixes ready of stuff I've been working on, and now have permission to post. I hope to post a couple of them tommorow ...
Fishbone, The Beastie Boys, and Murphy's Law were all on Madonna's tour in 1986. All but Madonna played at WWU in Bellingham, my freshman year there. It was the bestest thing ever ever ever. Of course, the next year a new crew took charge, and they picked Night Ranger. Wasn't quite as successful, somehow, and lost thousands. But Fishbone took me places I wouldn't have probably gone on my own, and they played with other bands that my ADHD, thrash addicted younger self can only appreciate decades later, like Thelonius Monster, RHCP, and several other SoCal bands that Fishbones played in. I think I saw them again in Seattle with Bad Brains and Living Color. Wowsers. My increasingly politically correct gf started hating them for being heterosexist, but they could sure play the hell out of anything.
One of the best bands EVA!. They pretty much invented ska-punk(some punk bands had dabbled in ska, and vice versa, but none had mixed the two so effectively), and they epitomized the once-proud "alternative" genre.
Most of the members had a unique and strong voice within the band, and this may have ultimately been their undoing. This is most evident on the underrated "Give A Monkey A Brain" album. The influences that each member brings to the table are obvious: Chris Dowd's soul, John Norwood Fisher's classic funk, Kendall Jones' political rock and ska, John Bigham's metal, and Angelo Moore's angry punk. It's a wonderfully chaotic album, and the versatility on display is awesome to behold.
Of course, back when the band was working in harmony, the result was even more astounding. "Truth and Soul" is one of the greatest albums ever made, and their live show was second to none. IMO, they lost their way when Chris Dowd left the band. He truly was the soul of Fishbone.
(no, this isn't what I'm planning on posting tommorow night)
The 2 Andys (no, not the Camel's two Andy's nor Wishbone Ash's 2 Andy's), but they are both from England ...

Probably all that's left of me in there is the strings MIDI ... I allowed the 2 Andy's to take over on this.
great song. it's a classic.
funny that their love of zappa is mentioned. i work at a night club that project object (who play all zappa music) played at recently. the lead singer is ike willis, who played with zappa for several years. after the set, he told us that his son was johnny fish from fishbone, and johnny and angelo from fishbone got their start opening for zappa as well as ike's other bands.

Happy Thanksgiving
Do I recognize that voice? ;)
Fishbone is da S**t! I had the great pleasure of opening for them during "Give a monkey a brain and he'll swear he's the center of the universe" Days. One show, we were the local support. To watch fish play drums is enough to make a fellow drummer want to hang it up. He likes to set up in profile to the crowd. Hi-Hat side. Great way to watch a great player. Great band, nice guys.
Servitude, Ma and Pa, Bonin in the Backyard, all of it great!
They did a track for the Sublime tribute. "Date Rape" Killer cover.
Haven't been around new music since we WERE new music in the late '80's in Phoenix, my two daughters, my husband and I in "Side Effects". Divorce broke up the band.
I've been missing plenty, but then I've done a lot of other things since then, such as starting college in '89 on a scholarship playing bass in jazz band... later was playing again while finishing up my undergrad thing. I'm on my second Master's now, in Creative Writing (my MA in Humanities didn't get me a job), and it is really having a positive effect on my creativity in general and my lyric-writing especially.
Always enjoy the discussions here.

Was this the tour they did with Red Hot Chili Peppers? I saw them both at the rainbow music hall in denver, late 86 if i remember correctly.
They did the encore together, but i can't remember which song.
U.G.L.Y was my fave from Fishbone around that time.
I went to the after party at their hotel. Anthony Kiedis took up a collection for beer, and they went to 7-11 and bought 3.2! I gues they didn't know about the 3.2 laws in Colorado at the time.
The Chilis were wearing socks on cocks at the party.
I didn't get laid that night. Sure should have.
and this is a great site too.
i saw them many times, but will never forget seeing them in a packed university club, right after "The reality of my surroundings" had dropped. They had killer production - the kick drum was my stomach and the snare was a knifepoint right through my throat - it blew my mind.
but the highlight really was when the crowd lifted up a guy in a wheelchair and surfed him to the front of the stage - even the band was blown away! the guy was maybe a little freaked - he was hanging onto the pipes in the ceiling just in case, but the crowd loved it, and i bet he did too.
fishbone forever.
I saw Fishbone in Bloomington Indiana in 1986 and they rocked the house. Wild horns, stage antics, monster riffs, butt shaking grooves, incredible drumming... never understood why the band didn't become wildly popular.
