C&L's Late Nite Music Club with James

Title: Heavens
Artist: James

James is one of my guilty pleasures. I think they were one of the real underrated bands of the '90s. This is from their best album, Seven. Unfortunately, they're better remembered for "Laid," which while fun, is a trifle of a little throwaway song, and wasn't even the best song on the album of the same title (that would be "One of Three," which doesn't seem to have a decent video available).

Yea, always loved James. Definitely underrated and I admit, while "Laid" is a damn fun song, it doesn't represent the best of the band.

Seriously, I love your psuedo. :-)

and why is that? seriously?

I think you should check out the Dutch band SuperSister. I think you would really dig them.

What I don't get is why you labeled James a "guilty pleasure." My understanding of that phrase is that it is something one enjoys, but doesn't always want to admit enjoying. I see nothing guilty about liking James. They were a very good band.

They're getting inside"

Sorry but I vote "Sometimes" as best song on the SEVEN album. It has that great, constant sound and progression you can just get lost in and put on repeat without ever getting tired of it. Great stuff all around - and yes, very underrated band indeed.

"sometimes" is definitely one of the better songs. I always loved "out to get you" - very quiet, but builds up... hell, the whole fucking album is good - one of those rare finds.

Had it right the first time - "Sometimes" is from the "Laid" album.

for posting exorbitantly last night, I got carried away with colors, so tonight I will try to contain my enthusiasm and limit my posts to just a few.

Kenny Rogers - The Gambler

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn481KcjvMo

On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces,
And knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
And if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice."

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

Great choice! James are one of my favourite bands. I would have to disagree about Seven being their best album, though. I think Laid is the best by rather a long way. Anyway, I don't know whether or not you are aware of this, but they reformed a year or so ago and put out an album that's really rather good. Here's the title track being performed on Jools Holland:

James - Hey Ma

It's also pretty obviously about the war, so I suppose it's somewhat appropriate for this blog.

I was under the weather and inside my bed all night. It looks like I'll have some fine tunes for my listening pleasure later!

I would agree with you about "Seven" being the best James album, but it is no longer true. James reformed this year, and they recorded a new album "Hey Ma." I kid you not, Hey Ma is EASILY THEIR STRONGEST, most mature album! If you're a James fan, you should race over to Amazon post-haste and preview it.

I only found about the album because James came over to the US two months ago for a brief tour. I saw them open for Squeeze in NYC, and their new material was so good I went to the Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ to see them the following night. The Stone Pony only holds 500 people, so you can imagine what an opportunity that was.
