C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Sam and Dave

I culled this from a great disc I happened upon titled Stax/Volt Revue: Live in Norway, which was taken from clean videotape of a performance in Oslo on April 7, 1967. The band is Booker T. and the MG's (Steve Cropper is young, slender, tall and clean shaven -- not the Steve Cropper we knew from later years) and Donald "Duck" Dunn looks rather different too. Sam and Dave really cut loose on this one.

Agnostic Front - Crucified
Sorry David, not a big fan of that kind of music ;)
...is the only word I can think of to describe that performance. Sam's preachin' up there! Damn!
@#1 - Punk is fine, but soul is one of the foundations of popular music. Don't have to like it, but respect it. (Bob Mould fan myself)
really? respect it? I didn't say jack shit about soul in the first place but now you want me to respect it?
Just no!
Hm. So... "Sorry David, not a big fan of that kind of music," following up a LNMC post of Sam & Dave doesn't mean you don't care for soul music?
What, exactly, were you talking about, then?
Perhaps you should try harder to be clear about what you're writing if you wish others to, you know, understand whatever you're driving at.
uhu, you can't tell me what to respect!
That is what i'm saying!
Clear?
Funky Broadway
Wicked, wicked....

So this band from Tooth and Nail Records, Anberlin, has a new song out that's getting some play on the modern rock charts. The song is Breaking. To me, it sounds an awful lot like Outfield's classic 80's hit Your Love. At times I wonder since Anberlin plays so terribly. Note to kiddies: distortion can't hide the bad.
And second, I've been hearing Muse's latest Uprising which sounds a hell of a lot like Blondie's Call me.
And in case you missed a few weeks back, I pegged David Gray's newest Fugitive as a rip of Saigon Kick's I Love You.
What say the LNMC junkies?
The Outfield was pretty much a straight up ripoff of The Police anyway ...
House On The Corner
An outstanding IMO cover of the song here by Guy Sebastian and Jimmy Barnes. Backed by Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn, so you know it's good.
Hold On, I'm Coming
that performing after Sam & Dave was like following 2 Jackie Wilsons (Wilson himself was of course a tremendous showman).

Va-va-voom!
;)
That was not Carla Thomas in that video.
:D
I love her dress!
;)
Truly, a blast from the past!
Soul Deep
you gotta gotta gotta. Really ties the music to the time and place. At one point they mention that the Stax musicians (black singers, black/white accompanists) liked to hang out at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis (because it was a fairly nice clean place in that segregated town that rented to black folks), and I'm thinking "oh shit, I can see where this is going".
It's great!
My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough.
I'll Take You There
Take Me In Your Arms
Please forgive the brief excursion away from Memphis.
As Long As I've Got You
Go Now
The original recording of the song, later a hit for The Moody Blues.
Betty Wright...?

Her version is the best, in my opinion. Thank you, Andy!
Moody Who...?
Their version of that song might be inferior to Ms. Banks' version, but they were pretty damned good at what they did later, imo.
I like The Moody Blues too!
:)
Question
didnt mean to offend the MB fans ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZbHagBNY98
I wasn't offended. I was just, uhmmm, sayin... :D
BTW, I saw This Is Spinal Tap in its original theatrical run, and I caught the Moody Blues vibe right away. Harry's moustaches and pipe, the Listen To The Flower People video...The Moody Blues look is awfully easy to laugh at.
no prob ...my older brother played WAY too much MB music when I was a litle kid ... so I loved ST when it came out ... always thought Nigel was a little too brutally close to Jeff Beck tho ...
oh man ...that has to be one of the funniest moments in satire ever ...
Thanks for the memories!
I like as well.
Some makes me close to tears tho :(

Leave me alone :p
If you're ever in Memphis, the Stax museum is definitely worth a trip.
To a little kid who grew up on transistor radio in the late 60's that would be a pilgrimage to Vatican City ...

...don't miss The Stooges Wax Museum, featuring lifelike replicas of the southeast Michigan proto-punks depicting them in different phases of their careers, as well as a fully functional 35' high wah-wah pedal- so bring your axe and plug in!
Ann
and from Detroit:

I think we're the only ones around here who remember Marshall.
Damn, I haven't posted anything as an LNMC feature for a while. I've gotta write up something Detroit-y soon.
pushing Marshall on people as the great Pop star who never was ... just 'lent' my Rhino CD to a soon 2 b ex gf --- uh oh ....apparently its hard to come by. Anyway he has a lot of fans up here in Canuckistan ...he just never seems to tour this far north ...
Crenshaw's, that is.
The early/mid '80s was all about synthesizers and/or glitzy, make-up wearin' metal bands. Had Crenshaw released his first LP in the late '70s or the early/mid '90s...He got a decent amount of airplay here in (west) Michigan, but never got a big following.
,
It's time for me to bid you adieu for the evening.
Thanks to everyone for the fine tunes tonight!
happy trails!

If I ever get around to returning to Bonnaroo, a detour to Memphis should definitely be on the itinerary.

I've been lately listening to Earth, Wind, and Fire. (September, Let's Groove, Boogie Wonderland)
And despite what the Sultans of Swing think, I like horn accompaniments.
Co-writer of "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs. Maybe the coolest song of all time:
