C&L's Late Night Music Club With Neil Young

Title: Thrasher
Artist: Neil Young

My love for Neil Young is certainly no secret, and this is one of my all time favorites of his. Not many people have been so powerful with just a guitar and a voice, but there are some who are right up there with him. What is your favorite performance with one person using one instrument?

And PS: Our sister site Newstalgia has for its mid-week anti-road rage concert, some lovely chamber music for you.

"Trouble" live in LA, '98. I was at this show and when Eddie played this you could have heard a pin drop. It was electrifying, one of the finest live moments I've seen.

This is the guy I'd most like to come over to my house with just his guitar someday. There's some great stuff of him solo on youtube. Here's one:

Drowned (from the Secret Policeman's Ball concert)

I love this. How amazing to see one of the great rock anthems of my youth turned into a street-corner ditty about a dedicated gamer.

That's my favorite Neil Young song. It reminds me of driving out to Colorado with a friend to experience the Bohemian lifestyle for 2 months sleeping in parking lots and camping out. Hanging out in Aspen,Manitou Springs,Estes Park, backpacking ,climbing, fishing. Wish that I had tried to stay there and make a go of it. Wound up joining the Army instead.
Good memories. :^)

Most folk (and Neil Young) are breaking the stated one person one instrument rule. If you make it simply one person then you have to compare performers to freaks like Hasil Adkins and Bob Log III.

The Paul Simon 9/11 reference is good. I'd add Bowie on the Omnichord playing "America" at the same event.

Why not consider something contemporary? This guy is extremely underrated:

A single man and guitar, Phil Ochs, sang this at the Chicago Democratic Convention 1968,
and inspired many in the audience to spontaneously burn their draft cards. Ochs in a
favorite of N. Young.

Check out the doc about Phil and those times.

Neil Young is one of my all-time favorites, probably have over forty CDs (not to mention all the vinyl in the garage...) of his and CSNY's music. Learned most of his songbook by heart on my old Alvarez.

Pete Townsend playing "Won't Get Fooled Again" at the Other Policeman's Ball is classic, too.

But anyone who saw Michael Hedges perform live left that show a different person. He was (as Will Ackermann said) "The guitarist from another planet!"

Sorry, I don't have time to look for a You Tube video, but my favorite performance for today (can't rule out so many Neil Young songs for more than 24 hours) is "Ambulance Blues," from On The Beach. There is some harmonica on the song as well.

If you sit Elton John down at a piano, he'll play and sing and it sounds like an album. He's got it all right in his fingers. I wish he'd do a whole "unplugged" album of his top hits. (I don't ask much!)

Did Paul McCartney play the piano for the 'naked' version of "The Long and Winding Road"? If so, that one.

Steve Winwood did a solo (shorter) version of "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys." If the sound wasn't so raw, it would have been great.

Jimmy Webb did a whole solo album of his own songs, just him and a piano, including MacArthur's Park and Wichita Lineman.

I'll think of more when I hit the "Remember" button. (aka "Send")
