C+L's 4th of July Late Nite Music Club
By MaxMarginal Friday Jul 03, 2009 7:00pmChristmas sure has a lot of songs, but 4th of July not so many. This one by Soundgarden is a fantastic slab of total sludge that's buried toward the end of their classic album Superunknown, and I always skip ahead to it.
"Fourth of July" by X is another great one.
What will you be spinning at your BBQs this weekend?

Good pick. I don't think I knew it before, but I like it.
Happy 4th of July everyone. And Happy July 1st for Canadians.
Cheers to all!
Thanks for posting a Soundgarden tune. Happy 4th to everyone.
Gee, if anyone's written a song call "Get the Hell Off My Lawn," that would be a great help!
:D
Paul Gilbert is primarily an instrumentalist, but the punchline comes at the end if you wait for it:

See if your rightwing neighbors and relatives are paying attention...
I've always loved the song Grandma's Hands. I've also always loved Bill Withers, but the song seemed even older him - maybe older than the hills. Anyway, it's been covered by a bunch of people, but I hadn't heard this one by Take 6 until just recently.
I likey!
About as punk rock as Green Day, or Garth Brooks. Or somewhere in between. And I mean the X version, simply awful.
I always go with Marvin:

And Jimi:

Marvin and Jimi were amazing. Thank you so much for those special treats!

is one of the best songs evah and this version of This Land is Your Land is a musical gem.
Thanks, dondiago ... very nice!
Salty,
X was as much punk as they were country. They were one of the originals. Long before Green Day or Garth Brooks, there was X. Go listen to Los Angeles or Wild Gift. They were "punk" because of their attitude, not their music. Far better musicians than most punk, and I like punk.
Is beyond punk, country, or any other name you could give it. It's truly one of the best sounds in this history of rock, even on their worst songs.
the night i put this on in a bar in omaha, nebraska.
truly goddamned priceless.
X's version is fine, but I always preferred Dave Alvin's original.
Then there's the other great song with 4th of July in the title: Sandy (Fourth of July, Asbury Park)
George M Cohan or a good Susa march.
I did sound support when I had my studio in Seattle in the 1980's. One of my biggest clients was LP Productions. We did a huge show for the 4th in 1991 at the county fairgrounds. I picked a lot of Cohan and other music for the show. The 4th is Cohan.
