We had a great discussion here last week about our favorite Beatles covers. What about Dylan covers? Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" might be Jimi's best known, but "Like a Rolling Stone" live at Monterey is my favorite Dylan cover, hands down.

What's yours?

My pick is Girl from the North Country by Ronnie Hawkins.

That was gorgeous.

And that people always confused it with Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Faire," which shares some of the lyrics but which I believe was recorded later, and I guess both songs came from a traditional English folk song. Anyway, I couldn't find any video or audio evidence of the Dead's version, but maybe someone with some recordings has one.

i really enjoyed his remake of the overture to how the west was won!

R.I.P. Redding composer Jack Lawrence dies at 96; wrote "Beyond the Sea".In addition to Clooney and Darin, Frank Sinatra had his first solo hit with "All or Nothing at All" and "If I Didn't Care" launched The Ink Spots.

In no particular order:

1. "It's All Over Now Baby Blue," Them
2. "Tomorrow Is A Long Time," Rod Stewart
3. "Tomorrow Is A Long Time," Elvis Presley
4. "The Mighty Quinn," Manfred Mann
5. "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," Bryan Ferry
6. "Visions of Johanna," Robyn Hitchcock
7. "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," Shawn Colvin
8. "Buckets of Rain," Neko Case
9. "I'll Keep It With Mine," Bettie Serveert
10. "I Wanna Be Your Lover," Yo La Tengo

Of course, I'll remember one or two more that really should be on here immediately after I post this...

I was going to mention Ferry's version of Hard Rain. What a great cover. Much better than anything on his recent Dylanesque cd. Lulu also did a great cover of Mighty Quinn although it was more a cover of the Manfred's version than the original.

The version from Live At The Cellar Door is better.

Simple Twist Of Fate is my all time favorite Dylan song. What a story!

Dang, a 16+min. "Simple Twist" vid I'd never seen.
Suh-weet! Thanks...

While working in a record store (ask your parents what that is) I came upon a disc called "Night of the Guitar" on which a version of "All Along the Watchtower" was performed or rather dueled by: Randy California, Pete Hancock, Steve Howe, Steve Hunter, Robby Krieger, Alvin Lee, Andy Powell, Ted Turner & Leslie West! What a wreck! Best rockin' cover ever heard by these ears.

Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs - 1977

its not a cover of a dylan song. Its a totally different song called Too Rollng Stoned probably inspired by Dylan but its a different song.

I know was just listening to it--lol sharing

John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards ~ 'Yer Blues'

Love Trower's guitar playing and Jimmy Dewar's voice. I've never really liked any other singer he's used but I still listen just to hear his guitar.

cover of Its All Over Now Baby Blue

why zack snyder thought this would be cool to run the credits of watchmen on is anyone's guess

It's funny that I put this very cover on the back end of a Dylan compilation I made myself yesterday! Great stuff indeed. My favorite Jimi covers though are his version of The Beatles "Day Tripper" and Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love."

The Solas version of "Dignity" is superb; it's on their recording: The Edge of Silence

Castles Made Of Sand. RHCP

Let Me Stand Next to your Fire. This is from thier old days.

But "Highway 61" by Johnny Winter was my favorite Dylan cover, followed by many Byrds' covers. Even though Leftover Salmon did a great job with a few whenever they played.

and the folks who set up the festival, put out those rickety old wooden chairs instead of just letting people sit on the ground. So when the Who did their thing killing their axes and drums, folks were on top of all the chairs to see it. Then the Dead came on so folks sat down nicely till Jimi came out and did the old lighter fluid on his ax, and then they went on top of the chairs again.

I don't rightly know what I was gonna say, after growing up in the 60s, being 61, having a stroke or two, I sometimes forget.

That counts. ALOT!
The Fairgrounds haven't changed much. Still in the same place.
Still no seating. Just grass.

and the Altamont Speedway Free Festival and Santa Clara Pop '69. I wish to this day I had made it to Woodstock!

I was 12. But I remember feeling that Woodstock was a big deal. And that I was missing something. Even at 12.

Most of the Time covered by Ani DiFranco

This one even brought me outta the woodwork.

I am a diehard Hendrix fan.

Thanks for posting that.

Nothing for Dylan.

But here's my favorite Hendrix clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL1o_pdz5uI

Heard that Masters of War last night. Killer.

Helped by the fact that despite the intensity of the lyrics, in Dylan's own version he sounds terminally bored.

I put my vote in for Neil Young's All Along The Watchtower from the 30th anniversary concert though.
