C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Bat for Lashes
By MaxMarginal Tuesday Nov 10, 2009 8:00pmDoes the world need a second coming of Kate Bush? I have no idea, but I'll take the second coming of anything if it can make a record as good as Bat for Lashes' Two Suns, which will close out the year on the top of my best of '09 list if some unseen masterpiece doesn't fly out of nowhere in the next seven weeks.
"Siren Song" (here's the studio version, which truth be told has an edge that's hard to capture playing live on the radio in Santa Monica at nine in the morning, as Bat for Lashes, nee Natasha Khan, does in this clip), is a subdued yet menacing terror with perfectly bare lyrics, and all without ever developing a steady beat. An artist this capable = someone we'll still be talking about ten years down the road.

of hardship that so many face...
Speaking of Kate Bush reminded me of one of my very favourite songs...'Don't Give Up'...performed by two incredibly talented people, whose voices are quite simply magic.

and they're so young. Stunning.
Erasure - Siren Song (Live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_hU0-1wYwQ
Song begins at 1:23
I'll pass.
It has a pretty stead beat to my ears, just in 9/8 time (triple-triple), but then I listen to a lot of odd time signatures.
Here's another odd one by my friends Fractal - Mantra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AAoPRncV3g
and another very good female singer/pianist - Rabbit Motaei - Disciple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMr7DTqKB9o
links are live gigs, both have studio tracks in iTunes.
enjoy...
But I'm with "vetinari"; that beat is rock steady, and I'm sure as a musician you hear it as well.
I've been a huge Kate Bush fan since 1978 and I've seen several artists compared to her over the years (Tori Amos, Jane Siberry) but Natasha Khan is the first where I really hear it. Saw Bat For Lashes live in Seattle a couple of months back with the ever cool & delicious Charlotte Hatherly on guitar(etc.) It was great although the sound in the venue sucked as did the opening act (Other Lives? Something like that.)
