C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Cheap Trick

Title: Surrender

Cheap Trick might not be the greatest band of all time, but they're definitely the least bad.

Arena rock without the overblown self-importance. Pure radio pop without the bubblegum. This song, about coming to terms with the fact that your parents are a little edgier than you might be comfortable with, has always been my favorite.

My friend and I make a lot of top ten lists about music, and Cheap Trick was #1 on our "least hated bands of all time" list along with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, X and Thin Lizzy. Who else can you think of that might not be everyone's favorite, but rarely inspires revulsion in anyone?

When I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch.
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling, got my Kiss records out.

The visual cracks me up.

Thanks.

great lyrics and the coolest drummer in the world

Now I had heard the WACs recruited old maids for the war.
But Mommy isn't one of those, I've known her all these years.

Does anyone else get the feeling that either a censor or record company made them change the lyrics from calling Mommy a whore?

Wow! Hadn't thought of this great song for a lonnnng time. Also Dave Edmunds I Won't Bail You Out and From Small Things Mama, Big Things Sometimes Come

Small Things contains the greatest line in any song.

When they caught her all she said was she couldn't stand the way he drove.

BLASPHEMER! I won't sit here and listen to such heresy! X = (Greatest + Band + Ever)

Got me through the '80s they did.

With that I will reveal the musical artist I absolutely love but who my admiration has remained hidden to all but a select few. Madonna.

... was one of the most lackluster performances of that concert series. There is much better material. Try this one:

Look Out

Low sound quality here but positively shredding guitar (both Rick and Robin), great melody, rhythm, soaring vocals. You know, the things you expect from Cheap Trick.

Better yet, go see or buy the whole 30-year commemorative DVD of the show. I caught it at my local art cinema house and I just saw it on Amazon as well.

But I like Thin Lizzy a little better.

How about Nick Gilder?

Hot Child In The City

Familiar with Lee Abrams, the radio programmer? Before that guy- and later, MTV- record companies would try to break different artists in different towns. We got this song in the late '70's, and Gary Myrick And The Figures in the early '80's. But I drop those names on people who lived in different markets and the reaction is usually, "Who?"

The Message

Nick Gilder was the lead singer of a Vancouver-based band called Sweeney Todd. There only real hit was a tune called "Roxy Roller". For a brief stint a very young Bryan Adams sang for this band.

I saw them play at a high school party at a roller rink back in '75 or so.

JIm Carroll Band was monster. I saw the original band in SF, Great American Music Hall, I THINK sometime in '81. I HATED what they called punk rock and such in those daze, but these guys (my roomie was from The Bronx, FORCED me to go) were awesome. After that, I learnt to like The Clash, The Tubes and caught up with half a decade of music I had shunned.

Basketball Dairies is a BRUTAL read. Everyone should read it, to KNOW what it's like in The Burroughs, to know the seedy side of The Big Apple and all the maggots.

I live in the Midwest and Boingo did not get a lot of radio play here. But I don't know anyone who doesn't love them.

They did play a lot on the college club circuit back in the day. DJ's and cover bands did a few their songs here and there, but a lot of people bought them for their cover art and then fell in love with the music.

I just introduced them to my 18 year old daughter about a year ago, and now I can never find my CDs.
