C&L's Late Nite Music Club - Covers Night with Oasis
By MaxMarginal Thursday Jul 23, 2009 7:00pmI'm a sucker for a great cover tune, and if you aren't then you're just too cool for school!
Quiet Riot's cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel the Noize" is better known than the original. This version by Oasis, apparently well known among more dedicated Oasis fans than this one, is absolutely addictive and has immediately shot deep into my top covers list, along with Jimi's "Like a Rolling Stone" and Jawbox's "Cornflake Girl".
What's on your list?

at all about them.
Search your feelings, you know this to be true.
I feel your feelings. And I acknowledge your dislike.
Oasis is a terrible band.
I can't believe they were comparing them to the Beatles when they came out.
Concur completely.
And I prefer Slade's original to Quite a Riot's too.
I've never liked this Beatle wannabe band.
Not at all a good cover. Slade's version, the original, is far superior. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLsw668PVyY
I like Oasis but you can't top the original. Noddy has one of the all time classic rock n roll voices. Slade roolz.
However, I really like his voice, a lot!
David Torn covering Jack Bruce's tune "The Rope Ladder to the Moon."
Lee Dorsey's "Workin in a Coal Mine" as covered by Devo
Camper van Beethoven's cover of "Interstellar Overdrive"
Charles Mingus' cover of Gershwin's "Summertime" WOW!
The Residents' "Third Reich and Roll" which covers and twists a few dozen late sixties psychedelic hits such as "Talk Talk.
I vote "Yes" for that Devo tune. A true 80's classic remake.
Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt". It absolutely blew me away when I first heard it (the video had something to do with that too). His broken, soulful rendition by a past-his-prime Cash has to be in the top 5 covers of all time. Cash forever owns that song.
I liked that song so much it made me hurt myself.
Today.
It is a masterpiece!
Only "The Man in Black" himself would have the balls to cover that song - and it's way better than the NIN original.
While we're talkin covers.
I STILL think Metallica's Garage Days Re-Revisited is one of the best cover albums of all time.
I love that cover.
Instead of Oasis doing a poor job of covering a Slade song, how about Ryan Adams doing a wonderful job covering an Oasis song.
Wonderwall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjZCO9vtjpY
I was absolutely blown away by that. First of all, the Johnny Cash had ever heard of NiN, and then that he'd do one of their songs. Being a fan of both, I was enthralled by Cash's version.
System of a Down covering Snowblind by Black Sabbath.
Tis a very effective pick-me-up.
Hey Jude by Wilson Pickett (with Duane Allman on guitar)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IFB9Q_3t_k
And Stevie Wonder's We Can Work it Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQoB3jtbjnI
Several covers come to mind:
Jools Holland Big Band w/Paul Weller "Will it Go Round in Circles"
Government Mule Live - "War Pigs" (yes, the Ozzie/Black Sabbath tune)
Patti Smith Group - "So You Want to be a rock and roll star"
The Band (from "The Last Waltz") - "Mystery Train"
Ah the video for Govt Mule "war pigs" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5M47DBu6nA
Megadeth - These Boots [are made for walking]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW3N2vOuniQ
Tesla's "Signs"
Scorpions' "Can't Explain"
Dream Theater's "Perfect Strangers"
Foo Fighters' "Baker Street"
Faith No More's "War Pigs"
There was a whole album of really good Zep covers called "Encomium" a while back, a lot of surprisingly refreshing takes on some classic stuff.
Van Halen practically survived on covers for a while; some were really top-notch. Their live disc had a really great take on "Won't Get Fooled Again."
Seriously, I could go on for hours.
FF's version is way revved up, and I love their replacing the word "booze" with "crack" in the line "give up the booze and the one night stands."
version of Route 66.
Johnny Winter doing a smokin' cover of Dylan's Highway 61:

Yesterday Once More
Redd Kross has recorded a lot of great covers over the years. Wish I could find their version of Citadel (Rolling Stones) or Blow You A Kiss In The Wind (Boyce & Hart) from their Teen Babes From Monsanto album.
Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White
Originally recorded by The Standells.
Whoa...haven't heard of those guys in eons!
Love's Alone Again Or
MC5's Looking At You
The live Damned album is quite good.
I really liked that song, Andy. Great video.
They don't really add anything to it. Kinda hard to top that original, IMHO.
Soundgarden did a cover of Stray Cat Blues on a limited available bonus disc from the BadMotorFinger cd. Also the previously mentioned Devo - Coal Mine, Faith no More - War Pigs covers.
Finally got Dream Theater's Change of Season's today. It's full of covers and I can't wait to crank it on the drive to work tomorrow.

Don't Forget Rusty Cage!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGBZf5oKspk
Foo Fighters: "Born on the Bayou"
CCR - Heard it Through the Grapevine
Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell On You
Tina Turner absolutely owns Proud Mary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54XRNQ2C2x0
.
Fishbone covers Sublime's Date Rape http://www.roxwel.com/player/fishbonedaterape.... Considering the subject matter, including the video's imagery, its odd that they bleeped out a couple of milder 'naughty' words...
That was wild! Thanks, oodaloop!
I was glad to do it
You are very sweet!
there!
One more Foo Fighters: Led Zep's "Rock N Roll" featuring a couple of guys you may recognize:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRBsgRYPR-4
I always preferred the live Michael "Kid Funkadelic" Hampton cover of Eddie Hazel's Maggot Brain (the live version is featured on One Nation Under a Groove). Does it count as a cover since it's all Funkadelic?
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds do a fantastic cover of Dylan's "Death Is Not The End"
Moog Cookbook doing Hotel California
http://www.myspace.com/moogcookbook
Devo: Satisfaction!
Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Siouxsie And The Banshees - You're Lost Little Girl
Nick Cave - Helpless....haven't heard it in a long time but remember it being really good!
Pixies - I Can't Forget
Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows
Sioxsie and the Banshees -- Dear Prudence (Beatles)
Camper Van Beethoven -- Pictures of Matchstick Men (The Status Quo)
Sonic Youth -- Superstar (The Carpenters)
Guadalcanal Diary -- And Your Bird Can Sing (Beatles)
Derek and the Dominoes -- Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)
Red Hot Chili Peppers -- Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)

Rage Against the Machine -- The Ghost of Tom Joad (Bruce Springsteen)
The Clash -- I Fought the Law (The Crickets)
The Who -- Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran)
Kula Shaker -- Hush (Deep Purple)
That's probably enough for one comment
Summertime Blues
I love The Who, and I love Eddie C's original of the song, but, imo, Blue Cheer absolutely pwned it.
Luther Vandross - Superstar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCtouIZwooo
Love the Clash's version of "I Fought the "Law".
And "Brand New Cadillac". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2WXlaWv2u0
Speaking of Siouxsie and the Banshees there cover of Helter Skelter was great.
Concrete Blond Little Wing
of that song. Even Sting can't ruin it.
Or ego strokes...

I love them! Saw them 2 years ago here in Chi. I don't think they played that but what an awesome show. Good to know they have fans out there.
That's a great choice.
Pretenders - Room Full of Mirrors
Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child
Ike & Tina - Proud Mary
M. Ward - Let's Dance
Foo Fighters - Down in the Park
God, there are like five million more, surely.

Sid Vicious -- My Way (Frank Sinatra)
Grateful Dead -- Morning Dew (Bonnie Dobson) (Jeff Beck Group also has a decent version)
Jimi Hendrix -- Hey Joe (numerous)
Vanilla Fudge -- You Keep Me Hangin' On (Supremes)
Try A Little Tenderness
Yep, not an Otis original. Written in the early '30's. Bertie Wooster might have crooned this.
Minnie The Moocher
Bulletboys - For The Love Of Money http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk2zoEZuEPg. Sound quality of this vid isn't great on my compooter.
White Lion - Radar Love http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1758j_white...
Great White - Immigrant Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVYVtm3nXfg
Got it on CD somewhere, I think.

For another odd juxtaposition, REM used to cover Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue". It was either the Document or Green tour... just a few years after Gramm's version was all over FM radio.. At any rate They played it straight, and did a great job with it. I saw them do this several times, but just bothered to find one. Enjoy (If you can).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQbAizfsvrQ
Saw them at Hollywood Bowl, Irvine Meadows, and (???). Can't recall which tour though. Would have probably forgotten to the grave had you not mentioned it.
Thanks.
I read the comments on the YouTube page... it was the Work Tour in 1987. 10,000 Maniacs opened for them (at least on the east coast). Stipe had this music stand that he dragged out for dramatic effect. I saw them 3 times on that tour, and they did this song twice. I developed a grudging appreciation for the original after this version...
Jawbox covering "Cornflake Girl" is quite nice. But close to my fave cover is Tori Amos givin' the bidness to "Smells Like Teen Spirit"... creepy and wonderful. The Breeders doing "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is also near the top for me.
Great Jawbreaker cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lodfiomYpDc
Uncle Tupelo - Dead Flowers
Almost any Neil Young cover
Black Flag - Louie Louie (especially pre-Henry) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s_d2ku8VGs
In early '80 LA punk, the last band of the night played a punk encore of Louie Louie and had members of other bands join them on the stage, this always happened at Black Flag shows. Other cities had similar traditions - in DC, it was Stepping Stone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS1H9yifTBA
I don't know all the other cities', but it would be interesting to collect
Al Green's cover of Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8WSR7we2EI
The Derailers did a great cover of the Prince song Rasberry Beret. I love Buck Owens' cover of Save The Last Dance For Me. Lulu did an absolutely demented cover of Dream Lover early in her career but then most of her early songs were covers. More recently Wreckless Eric did a nice cover of Sweet Jane. I think it's still available from his website www.wrecklesseric.com. It's a 7" vinyl single. Very cool. The Donnas did a cover of the Kiss song Strutter for the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. That was pretty cool.
Cowboy Junkies--Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane"
U2's covers of Reed's "Satellite of Love" and Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot."
cover of "Back in the High Life Again" (Stevie Winwood).
Alos I have to give a thumbs up to the folks who mentioned Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt", "Rusty Cage" and (I didn't see this one mentioned) "Personal Jesus."
Husker Du's cover of the Byrd's "Eight Miles High".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBKyBlJ_JN8
Bob Mould takes the song to total emotional annihilation.
How many threads now on oasis and green day now?
Max, great idea--Oasis is a great way to end a work day.
Two covers, both older, come to mind: Animals on Ike and Tina's River Deep, Mountain High--from Monterey 1967
and Roberta Flack's Over the Rainbow, from Montreux
Anything which covers Tori Amos is a hit. She sounds like the high-school bitch who used that precise tone of voice to damn with fake praise, and no, I didn't mean faint.
Always wanted to hit her upside the head with a cinderblock and drop her in the septic tank.
Machine Head - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnTXeXXLsOE
