I've always thought Cohen's Democracy was the perfect American song--patriotic but still horribly honest. I love the thought that we will find our way not in spite of our issues, but because of them. It makes all this suffering more tolerable, and gives me hope.
it's funding his retirement. It's actually re-funding his retirement. His manager ripped him off for millions and he had to leave the Greek Islands he so richly deserved and return to the smoke and cacophony one more time. His loss, our gain.
who can provide the template, the raw material, for another artist to take to even greater heights.
While his "Hallelujah" is indeed sublime, Jeff Buckley's is revelatory. A naked vocal & guitar, you are forced to hear the song in its purest sense. Fucking magic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLYHvMTpcrE
First of all, who ever said it was prose? Cohen was a very well regarded poet before becoming a very well-regarded songwriter. What prose?
He uses a lot of allegory (not more than Dylan, but sometimes arguably better)and his imagery is melancholy, sexual, ironic etc.
I'm not fond of all of his verses, but many are great.
Haven't read his novels--there is at least one. That would be the place to scrutinize his prose.
I saw LC in concert in Sydney twice in January. It was the most inspiring, brilliant, polished, amazing concert I've ever seen. People were transfixed and after the show everyone was buzzing like we'd just had a huge banquet of something spiritual and fulfilling. Words can't describe it... I've spoken to scores of people who saw him and all said it was the BEST thing they'd been to in their entire loves. I still get chills thinking about it. What a master!
and there are some truly great names playing at Coachella. It's sure to be a blast ... how I'd love to be there.
Thank you, Max!
The Jeff Healey Band ~ "Stuck In The Middle with You"
Kinda fits nicely!
With all due respect to Stealers Wheel, Healey's version is much better.
I enjoyed that, Acting Patriotic!
..is a gift from god.
I saw him in Princeton in the early '70s. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Glad he's still around.
... then we take Berlin.
Who is with me?!

Will his hearing still work after that event?
It was outrageously inspiring and great!
If you have a chance to see this true Master at work do NOT miss the opportunity. Seriously.

I'm not going to get the chance to see him, but if I did this is the song I'd want Leonard Cohen to play: Tower of Song
If It be your will and everybody knows are his 2 best song in my opinion

I love him like a brother. But I think this tour is funding his retirement. I can't afford a ticket.

Jeff Buckley's version makes my skin crawl. It's hard to explain... but I know I'm in a small minority there, Steve!
Party of two please, Buckley skin-crawling party.
I think it's the weird vibrato. Not sure.
It's the song, not Buckley.
Different strokes and all.
that you've never heard Ari Heist sing it.

Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" truthfully outs Bush and his groupies perfectly!

Leonard Cohen, the King of Purple Prose. What the hell do people see in that guy's stuff?

I absolutely hate this song. I cannot understand why so many people love it.
