C&L's Late Nite Music Club with U2

Title: Breathe

I'm a sucker for the world's biggest band when they aren't. That's why it was so refreshing to see them scale it back to the "four guys in a room with amps" format here on Letterman two nights ago with "Breathe". This song is buried tenth out of eleven on No Line On the Horizon, a spot where biggest and brightest are usually at their least self-aware, and therefore their best.

If you're picking up said album, do it at Starbucks and a buck will go towards providing medicine for people with AIDS in Africa via (RED).

I have really like this band for a long time, but after the Pop record I just haven't been able to get into them. I like the music to this song, but the melody and Bono's lyrics are rather weak, in my opinion, and considering how great some of their work has been I guess it's understandable they have lost "it" as far as I am concerned. Actually I am looking forward to the next batch of remastered reissues of their back catalog with all the b-sides, especially The Unforgettable Fire (my favorite of their 80s records) and Achtung Baby.

They are BOTH PHENOMENAL CD's, practically from start to finish.

Ireland used to be where English rockers would hang their hats to avoid taxes. Now the shoe's on the other foot.

...I think they're hype completely overshadows the true measure of their music. There's plenty of bands that have written fantastic accessible, exciting original music that don't get nearly the press this band gets. I'm not a hater, I just think they're a good band who's importance is overblown. That said I'm impressed with the new album. This song and "Get on your boots" are both very good tunes. The most original sounding stuff since Zooropa.

Meh

More garbage from U2. Their best music was in the 80s before Saint Bono began his world pompous ass tour. The band itself should have hung up the instruments years ago, but like the Rolling Stones are addicted to the cashola, so produce 1 hit on each crappy album they spew out.

This album is VERY good at least - I'll let you know if it's even better than that after I listen some more.

Here's a couple of FACTS:

This song "Breathe" rocks - it's EXCELLENT.

Unknown Caller, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Stand Up Comedy, Fez - Being Born and Cedars of Lebanon are EXCELLENT songs. That's 7 out of 11 EXCELLENT songs. How many bands are putting out albums in which there are more great songs than shitty songs on it? 30 years later?

The album BEFORE this was AMAZING.

The one before that was EXCELLENT.

I'd say they put out EXTREMELY high quality music for a band that has been doing it for 30 years.

Don't compare them to the Rolling Stones - there is NO comparison - the Rolling Stones HAVE sucked for a long time - it just makes you look like an ass.

That song rocked! Luv the Edge's guitar work. Gonna have to check this album out. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna listen again.:)

I went to church 2-3 times a week for 18 years. Then went off to that liberal bed of hedonism known as college. Went to see U2 on their "Joshua Tree" tour. Totally supplanted whatever my leading religious experience was up to that point. Like some, haven't cared for all their material since, but still get chills every time I see them live. Looking forward to checking out the new album.

I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

Would some one PLEASE teach these losers a few new licks on their instruments. That effing edge knows about 2 tricks.

Generally speaking I don't trust anyone making over 150K a year.

Thank you.

Assembling every few years for a record and world tour doesn't do a lot for ones musicianship. These guys are so inbred and self-referential it's become a little tedious. They might take a cue from their producer Daniel Lanois. Mix it up a bit. I saw Lanois some years ago in a trio with the marvelous jazz drummer Brian Blade and Darryl Jones on bass. It was great. They made some real music. These guys are in grave danger of turning into something out of Madam Tusseauds. And I totally agree about 'The Edge'. Not much going on there.

The final album production is crap. WAY too compressed and loud, which I know is nothing new, but come on. How about some highs and lows for crissakes!!
The new album by Derek Trucks on the other hand is produced excellent.
