C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Daniel Powter
A dubious honor for any songwriter/performer:
Canadian singer Daniel Powter has been voted the decade's one-hit wonder by Billboard magazine.
The singer's track Bad Day stayed at the top of the Billboard chart for five weeks in 2006 and the song also did well across Europe.
The magazine is describing a one-hit wonder as an act whose second single did not make it into the top 25.
The vote included acts from 2000 to 2007 as some who released a song last year could just be taking a break this year.
The track Terror Squad for Lean Back came in second place and Crazy Town with Butterfly came third.
Actually, I'd argue the point at which Alvin and the Chipmunks cover your song is when you know you've jumped the shark (hear that, Beyonce?).
Any other honorable mentions for one hit wonder status?

I've always liked that song.
C&L informs and entertains! Thanks, Nicole :)
I was just signing in to say the exact same thing!!
(another Canuck here) :)
I hope you are having a wonderful evening :)
would have to be,
Los Del Rio - Macarena
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN62PAKoBfE
that or,
Aqua - Barbie Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y24EKmzgYGU
I'm breaking out into hives just listening to the second song... :S
I've never seen change without a fire
Drives me up the flippin' wall, which only makes them sing it more. *sigh*
Imagine my surprise when I heard Mattel using a version of it for their ads. They HATED it when it came out and tried to sue Aqua, IIRC.
have to listen to it that much.
It's a surprise to me too that Mattel used the song... Not sure what brought about that turn of events.
I've never seen change without a fire
as a pretty brilliant piece of satire ....maybe I read too much into it .. ?

Not if you're wearing your campy filter.

Yes, I am aware of that. I do agree with you about the satire bit, and then added some more of my own. I wouldn't say I'm campy, but... oh, nevermind.

I was re to the comment above yours, tongue in cheek as usual
but it doesnt translate so well on the Intergoogler ...
Its nice that someone else picked up on the satirical aspect of that song ...I really think its a brilliant critique of American culture ... I mean, in the video he is waving a dolls arm around while he is singing ....Yikes! ...

No need to apologize. It's a common problem of the tubes. It's hard to articulate things well, and even follow along sometimes.
I know we're all brilliant and gifted in person. :)

I like the Barbie song. Maybe it's a gay thing. It was popular in the clubs. I agree with real_earl; great satire. "Life is plastic, it's fantastic... you can undress me anywhere... touch me anywhere..."
Maybe cuz we boys all wanted Barbies under the Xmas tree and got rotten old footballs.

it was hilarious when it ummm, came out ... catchy, and apparently subversive ... wow ...who knew?

that sounds exactly like "Come on Barbie let's go party" in that Aqua track. Hate both.
...we had comprehensive nation-wide discussion on the whole Powter thing last week, and the consensus was, well ... what the hell, if ya only have one song in ya anyway, why not make it really catchy, make a ton $$$ and disappear forever? ...well thats what all 33 million of us up here decided ;)
Dubious? I dunno. Why not give him a call ...? He's probly on the Island he bought, (if hes anyway smrt)

It's perfection. Make a quick few million and then disappear forever, right off the radar-- completely. My dream.

i think the best one-hit wonder of all time is "my sharona" by the knack (tho technically, i'm unsure if "baby talks dirty," their follow-up, cracked the top 25 or not).
How's it going?
I'd love to hear Baby Talks Dirty! Gotta link?
;)
I think the other single after "My Sharona" was "Good Girls Don't". I think that song charted.
If a drone kills a child in Kandahar, do the crying parents make a sound?
Nick Guilder might be another with his song, "Hot Child in the City". It took forever to reach number one.
This one is pretty good too, if I may use the way-back machine.

These are the kind of one-hit wonders I see/hear in Korea. Just so you know what kinda stuff I live with here. Samsung used it for a TV ad that was on 24/7, and then some. And I teach teenagers, so...

Bad Day always makes me teary and I can listen to it over and over again. I should be embarassed.
Funny a couple of 5th grade girls sung this as a duet at my son's 5th grade graduation a few years ago, with one of the girls playing accompaniment on electric guitar. It was beautiful...
I feel the same way about this song. I think it's more about how he says the lyrics than the lyrics themselves.

your name's Lebowski, Lebowski... and your wife is Bunny
or devolution, as it were, but what's with all the little clickable boxes in the video that lead me to Lady Gaga and Britney Spears videos? Why can't I watch anything any more without little notes popping up all the time?
I know, that's two different questions.
New Radicals - You Get What You Give {GreenPeace mix}
Jesus Jones - Right Here Right Now
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - Juvenal
Considering there is an ENTIRE ALBUM of the Chipmunks covering the Beatles, I don't think your jump the shark test works too well :P
They've got more hits than 99.9999 of the people on the planet. I don't know why they get no respect. The odds against getting one hit are great, those of having a lasting career, like the Stones, are astronomical.
I would guess Mr. Powter hoped, may still hope, to have other songs be as successful. Still, a large majority of artists achieve local or regional success at best. The entertainment value of these folks who never have a hit is profound. Mr. Powter did well with a pleasant pop song he wrote, and I congratulate him. Does it serve some positive purpose to have snide snarky categories like "One Hit Wonders?"
"Butterfly" by Crazy Town is a note for note rip-off of "Pretty Little Ditty" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.I have never heard a more obvious case of plagiarism.
has to be 4 non-blondes "What's Up". The song alone sold 5 million copies of their album.
