C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Duffy

Title: Mercy
Artist: Duffy

From the album Rockferry

I heard this song on my radio and I thought it was a great modern update to the female R&B singers stylings of the 60s. Imagine my surprise to find this Welsh woman in her early 20s who looks like she'd be more likely to be Disney's latest pop star, than a R&B songwriter.

Duffy rocks!

Hi Nicole,

I was ready to dislike this song very much, just from your description. Then I listened to it. And again. And loved it. Then I listened to it a third time, watching the video more closely, and then I sent it to three close friends. Wonderful!

Duffy, don't change.

When I create my time machine and drop 30 years and 50 pounds, I'm coming back to offer you a little bit of mercy... but not enough to satisfy. ;)

If you like this, you really must go to http://www.iheartmusic.com/cc-common/ondemand..., and listen to her performances in the Stripped Music section. She really works it!
(I hate going to a ClearChannel website, but some of the stripped performances are really great).

Northern soul dancing is so coooool KTF

I heard 'Mercy" a couple of months ago and went looking for more right away; my favourite is this live studio cut of "Syrup and Honey", just one guitar and that amazing voice...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fawOrelje7k

(The sound quality isn't the best, but this is a really cool video...)

Didn't Amy WInehouse bring back this sound?

Yep.

I loved the "Warlock mount hooves" effect on the dancers near the end!

Great tune and a great voice. Thanks Nicole!!

Proof that you don't have to show skin to be S-E-X-Y!!!

The lady has Soul, Soul, Soul. Thanks for clueing me into this. Obama brought me hope for America. Duffy gives me hope for music.

Am I the only one who wonders why these great videos are not complied and sold as DVDs? They just disappear, and that's a waste of incredible stuff.

The rest of the album's pretty good, too. There are quite a few good retro soul singers out there (Sharon Jones, Nikka Costa), and Wales has a great singing tradition.

i am proud to say that before i ever heard of duffy on the radio, on tv, on any other blog, or anywhere else for that matter, i discovered her on youtube and featured her on skippy's late nite music club w/this video.

there's a great resurgence of 60's soul-type sound coming out of britain these days, including duffy, as well as james hunter, adele, and i would grudginly add amy crackhouse.

You may have to watch a 30 second Saab ad, but it's well worth it.

Duffy "Mercy" acoustique

Good song, but Duffy better enjoy her 15 minutes. There's no real soul or authenticity there, just an attempt to fill a commercial void left by Amy Winehouse's self-destruction.

No offense Nicole Belle but where have you been the last year? DUFFY is huge in the UK and Europe.

[We're all here in the US. Where she hasn't been huge for the past year-Sitemonitor]

We have been jazzercising to this song since this past summer. GREAT SONG! (and BTW if you like to dance and want to find a new exercise plan jazzercise is a blast!)

I don't agree with J.C. I can't even sit still with this song on. Yah, yah, yah. Oh well. we all are entitled to our tastes and our opinions.

I said it's a good song, right? The first two words of my post are "good song." I'm just saying there's nothing very special about Duffy and she doesn't have much chance of having any kind of career longevity, partly because NOBODY has a career anymore, but also because she's riding a fad (60's neo-girl-group-soul or whatever it's being called) that will flame out by Wednesday.

By the way, what is "new" about Jazzercise? Do you not know it's been around since the 1970's, well before anyone had even termed it "aerobics"?

Cat Power - Cross Bone Style

I'm almost 60. I heard this song months ago. I searched all over. All I knew was Mercy and Duffy. My Grand kids couldn't help me. Then I found her on google. Then Walmart finally got the cd.But when I saw her on SNL, she blew me away. What a beautiful girl. No Fake crap.Just a stunning girl with a beautiful voice.I remeber looking like her in the 60's. Oh to be young again.

Feist - My Moon My Man

I love it when C&L goes global on the LNMC. It is quite true that Duffy has been a phenom for atleast a year. But in the U.S., not so much. It's always interesting to see the difference in the chart toppers across the pond. A few years ago, this severely talented UK rapper, Lady Sovereign, was on every single "one to watch" list out there. Watching her, you might have to ignore the fact that she looks like she's ten and listen to her sorta mind-blowing talent. Eminem needs a showdown with this chick. Notice how many hits this video has gotten.

And in case the title doesn't give it away, not safe for work, around kids, or the easily offended.

I'm a tiny bit addicted to Lykke Li, the child of Swedish avant-garde
globe trotters. She's been on the one to watch list for two years in Rolling Stone, among a lot of other publications.

At first take she will look and sound like typical pop, but it's not. She rocks. I want her shoes in the second video.

Some of the best lyrics per usual from this amazing artist:

Ram Jam "Black Betty"

Leadbelly "Black Betty"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REHxlwqeIKc

If you listen to Leadbelly's version, it's very reminiscent of Moby's sampling.

The song itself is controversial due to the title itself seeming racist but the wikipedia's iformation is extremely differing.

Shakira is pretty darn close tho.

Remember Youtube has shitty audio on its videos, they do some horrible watermarking which guts the audio of its quality.

I got this debut album almost a year ago. She's still in my CD changer. Also check out her newest song "Rain on your parade" (which does not feature on the album).

Imagine my surprise to find out it wasn't Amy Winehouse, who got there a couple years before her.

Of all the British new wave of blue-eyed soul singers, my favorite is Alice Russell
