Title: Hell No

Ever watch a movie and go "Meh" but absolutely fell in love with the soundtrack?

I happened to catch the Steve Carell vehicle "Dan in Real Life" last week on cable. When I'm working, I tend to keep the TV on as background noise (occupational hazard of being from a big family and having kids--silence is distracting). Normally, I tune it out, but I found myself completely entranced by Sondre Lerche's music. It was quirky, charming and really deserved a much better movie than the one in which it was featured.

Wish I could recommend the movie, but I do strongly recommend the soundtrack.

Any other movie soundtrack knock you out?

Yeah, a lot of movies scored by the late Jerry Goldsmith were like that.

Titan AE killed Fox's animation biz and spawned a killer CD. Unfortunately the propaganda operation was spared...

Killed Fox's animation biz? o_O

Their Sunday night lineup has had animation for about 20 years, and has been all (or almost all) animation for about 12, between the Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, The Critic, The Cleveland Show, The Tick, Batman: TAS, King of the Hill, and that one horrible show about teachers that had a bunch of big name voices in it.

They mean the Fox Animation Studios which was done through the movie studio.

Akira Kurasawa's movies make you go 'meh'? o_O

anyway, O Brother Where Art Thou was good, but its soundtrack was wonderful, and Singles seemed like a ripoff of Reality Bites, but the soundtrack was outstanding.

oodaloop's picture

Yep. Just as some of the comments above reveal an ambivalence towards Gene Kelly & Eartha Kitt, I just don't get the fuss over Kurasawa. The artfully sculpted imagery, moral complexity, cross-cultural appeal, and talented character actors all just leaves me flat. Give me a Pauly Shore flick that was filmed over a weekend. Now that's fine cinema. Someday, the world will appreciate Bio-Dome as the apex of film-making...

I loved the authenticity of the soundtrack. Samuel Jackson learn to play guitar for the role and wrote a song or two himself that was used in the movie. Son House was also in it, via some archival footage. This isn't from the movie, but it is Son House, magical performer that he was.

When I think of movie soundtracks, a lot come to mind.

The Crow has some amazing music on it...some original songs from The Cure, Henry Rollins and Violent Femmes.

The Graduate. Simon and Garfunkel wrote that shit for a movie...awesome.

Tangerine Dream's score for the film, The Keep, was great. Lousy movie.

Valley Girl is a virtual, who's who of 80's music.

Purple Rain, Saturday Night Fever, Repo Man, and O Brother, Where Art Thou are solid.

This could get out of hand...

Have to end it with Peter Gabriel's "Passion" from Passion of the Christ, and Ennio Morricone's The Mission.

Loved the movie too. But the soundtrack had a bunch of English ska bands like the (English) Beat. Great stuff.

didn't exactly make me go "meh," but the soundtrack is cool.

soundtracks that made me want to listen to them again,

the shipping news (kevin spacey, julianne moore)
last of the mohicans (daniel day lewis, madeleine stowe)
wilby wonderful (quirky little canadian film w/ rebecca jenkins, ellen page)
amelie (audrey tautou)

I had the same experience recently while watching Sam Mendes' most recent flick, Away We Go. The music was terrific, and was from someone that I'd never heard of- Alexi Murdoch. I'm now a big fan of his!

I absolutely love the soundtrack from Twin Peaks. It's still one of my favorite CDs.

"Better." It's what we should ask of ourselves and of our leaders.

Soundtrack to "Monster's Ball" by A&S was very emotional and powerful.

In a similar style was the soundtrack to "Traffic", although it also mixed in some nice latin pieces as well.

With Jay Ungar, Bobby Horton, Peter Ostroushko, Jaqueline Schwab, and others.
Probably my favorite disk.

Another mediocre movie with a great soundtrack. It was done by the late Michael Kamen, who also did the "Band of Brothers" series. In his youger days, Kamen played a mean oboe for the New York Rock Ensemble.

Would be the soundtracks from:

Goodfellas
O' Brother Where Art Thou
The Big Lebowski

Same thing with Notting Hill.

Sondre Lerche is quite a talent, check out Faces Down, a great record. Some people have described as Burt Bacharach with an electric guitar.
