C&L's Late Night Music Club with Romeo Void
By Stella Barkwell Sunday Mar 29, 2009 7:00pmFrom 1982. I had the vinyl and nearly wore it out. This was a San Francisco band, fronted by the Rubenesque Debora Iyall, born in Soap Lake WA and raised in Fresno CA. Her style is more of a spoken word throughout the verses and when she goes to the chorus and bridge, it’s more of a song. Some free form squawky sax in the background.

The song hasn't started yet, but is this that "I might like you better if we slept together" song?!? Frikkin' classic. I think we had just gotten cable when this came out....
That was yummy.
Takes me back to when the Earth was much younger, and so was I... dancing my nights away!!
Great sounds, great song. I haven't seen the video before like the homage to Jean-Luc's Breathless at the end, nice.
I know the song, but never saw the video.
Thank you, Stella Barkwell!
I love this song.
loved this band live ... SFAI. I think I saw them open for U2 at a club in the Embarcadero Ctr billions and trillions of light yrs ago in a far off galaxy. Could that be possible? Anywhoo, they were a great live band and Debora Iyall's impeccable poems perfectly matched to that sax. Limp white sweater and a fresh shag cuz a grrl in trouble is a temporary thing y'all. I believe this recorded version was produced by Ric Ocasek. How bout some flipper and some mutants too...these are the new dark ages afterall.
They opened for Translator who opened for REM at a little place on 4th street in Austin called Club Foot...Lot's of good memories...
It was used in the school dance scene in the movie "Reckless" in 1984 with Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah.
That movie had some other great music clips from INXS and Kim Wilde.
My tape copy of Never Say Never got worn out and confused my TOP 40 friends for a long time.
great great song that will always remind me of my younger days. Another great song from that same period of my life:
Delta 5 - "Mind your own business"

Frank Zincavage, the bass player is also a master carpenter. I had some great conversations with him on some projects we worked on together.
He still sits in on session work here in the Bay Area.

very excellent cover
I saw them play at the Western Washington University way back in the dark ages. I was hanging out with a friend who was into being stylishly late and then late on top of that, so we got there just in time for the last 3 songs.
Facebook, I think? Seemed like she was in a happy place when I checked a year ago and that's always nice.
This one never got as much airplay as it deserved. Then again, maybe that's why it seems so fresh today, because we didn't get burned out on it! Excelelnt selection C&L!
Maybe the video, but I'm pretty sure the song came out a few years before that. And as far as airplay, at least here in the Los Angeles area, it was in heavy rotation on KROQ and some of the college stations.
when they came to Eureka, Ca in 1985. I remember all the fliers around town had Deborah Iyall standing behind the rest of the band in an obvious attempt to hide her size.
Personally, I couldn't have cared less about her weight. I was just glad to have someone I'd heard of actually come to Eureka.
X headlined, Romeo Void in the center slot and a good band out of, I think, Seattle called the Enemy opened. Late October, 1982, Eugene, OR. I think I still have the poster around somewhere. I had the It's A Condition vinyl out on 415 Records, good stuff.
I remember this show well. Free tickets, gig upstairs at San Jose State. The floor was a basketball court (not nailed to the subfloor). The Pogo was done. The floor started bouncing wildly. I remember it took teams of roadies to keep the speaker stacks from falling over.
U2 ran out of material and had to repeat some songs. The San Francisco show is streamable at Wolfgang's Vault.
A large woman who seemed to actually enjoy sex. I learned something new!
