Late Night Music Club: 'Beat It,' by Pomplamoose

Pomplamoose (it means "grapefruit" in French) is a Bay Area indie jazz-pop band and is compromised made up of Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn, who do what they call VideoSongs.

For those who don't know, a VideoSong is a new medium with (as Jack puts it) two rules:

1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).

2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).

The unsigned band is fast picking up steam through social media. This is only one of their many interesting covers, but they have lots of cool, original music, too. (Oh, and they do a cover of a Gordon's Jewelers ad, which is amazing because in so many ways, they remind me of the late, lamented Huffamoose - whose name also ends in "moose" and had their song "I Want To Buy You A Ring" used in a jewelry commercial!) Like, synchronicity, man.

"Comprised of" is just wrong, wrong, wrong. "Composed of" is what you want. "Pomplamoose comprises Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn" is where you want to be. You're a writer now, Susie. Don't make freshman mistakes.

Yes, I know, I'm a grammar nazi and I'm going to hell. Carry on.

They can go to college.

Oh, wait...

the text up there says "compromised" - so, you're wrong, too!!

Heh

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. I think Susie has had a few cocktails tonight.

they were "compromised"!

was the word she was looking for.

Ya think so?

God save us from idiots.

I automatically insert the lyrics to "Eat It" instead. Works for me. So this is a hilarious, innovative cover of a great Wierd Al tune.

Very different

...is the shiz.

it was great until dude started playing the Strat. He is not ready for the Strat. Step away from the Strat.

a refreshing love of jeux de mots (word games)... and it could be interpreted as either a moose named pomp, or pumping the moose, or the ostentatious moose, or maybe even shoes made of moose hide (pompe being slang for shoes)...

I knew of Jack, but not this.

Wow. 'just went through their whole YouTube catalog. 'listened until the very end of every song. Nice. Thanks.

<1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).

so this isn't Britney Spears then

-- and a lot of fun. The chances are pretty good that I'll have this stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

How about Pretentiousmoose? Or Pompousmoose? I thought that flat singing and self-conscious, lo-fi noodling "crafted" by mooney-eyed trust funders went out of fashion in the late 90s.

Everything's funny . . even a hopeless cynic with oneupman complex.

Ginzberg, you must be part hammer, because you hit that nail squarely upon its pointy little head. Feh! on this band.

Wow, lovely and fun. Thanks for the turn-on.

video song: so simple it's brilliant. great performance really comes to life!

The group has evidently chosen to spell the word in a way that would cause English speakers to pronounce the word correctly in French; the correct spelling of "grapefruit" in French, however, is "pamplemousse". Just another bit of evidence of the dumbing-down of America; English-speakers are too dumb to be able to prounounce French words correctly when spelled as the French spell them.

I made it to about 1:32 before I had to turn this off. Every 14 year old kid with a garage band has NOTHING to worry about from these guys. Jeezuz, what a load of crap. So what if they can play a tune? So what if someone can edit a video in a snazzy way? The end audio product is amateurish at best, and the vocals are painfully weak and to me, unlistenable.

I have to say, this is the second worst piece of music I have heard this week, the number one spot goes to Yoko Ono singing "Waiting for the "D" Train" while her son Sean played (horribly) with a new incarnation of the Plastic Ono Band on Jimmy Fallon's show the other night. Rolling Stone gives Yoko four out of five stars for her new record, and those accolades are just as ridiculous as the ones given "Pamplamoose."

thanks for the video. loved it. went to the youtube and saw their other stuff. they do a version of earth wind and fires september that is simply grand, and the guys grandma does a great dance.
