Late Night Music Club: Essra Mohawk, Songwriter
By Susie Madrak Saturday Jun 27, 2009 7:00pmDid you know this Cyndi Lauper hit was written by Philly native Essra Mohawk? Now you can listen to her version. Essra has released 10 highly acclaimed albums including "Primordial Lovers" that Rolling Stone called "one of the 25 best of all time." Essra's songs have also been covered by The Shangri-Las, Vanilla Fudge, McFadden & Whitehead, Keb Mo', Bob Weir, Rita Coolidge, Eria Fachin, Lorrie Morgan and Annie Haslam.

Ms Mohawk has a powerful, lovely voice. She will go far in the music biz.
Philadelphians must be very proud of her!
She's gone far enough.
Hey, 61 ain't old!
:)
is the new 40!
Just ask Keith Richards (only 65!).
and life really begins at 50!
;)
A bunch of 60 year olds came up with that B.S.
Her voice comes across as the old lady next door who has good pitch but has an unpleasant voice and can't really sing. I can't say if she is better or worse than Brittany Spears but they are both in the same league.
I don't demand someone who has the chops to sing opera or belt out show-tunes. But you can find hundreds of self performers on YouTube who have a more attractive voice.
Is Brittany known primarily for her songwritng chops? Did she have her songs covered by Cyndi Lauper, The Shangri-Las, Vanilla Fudge, McFadden & Whitehead, Keb Mo', Bob Weir, Rita Coolidge, Eria Fachin, Lorrie Morgan and Annie Haslam? Will Brittany still be in the music business in her 60s? You can find thousands of self performers on youtube who have better voices than Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, J.J.Cale, Randy Newman or dozens of other fantastically gifted singer/songwriters. You obviously don't get it, but then you are also clearly no judge of musical talent.
how dare you have dissenting opinion about this woman! Ohh, that makes me soooo mad!
What is this, American Idol? Who the fuck is monkeyboy to think he knows what "league" she is in? I don't care that he has a dissenting opinion, I am merely pointing out that it means absolutely nothing to anyone but him, and apparently, you.
the Essra Mohawk fanclub? I agree, I think she's great, but she's not for everyone and everyone does happen to include monkeyboy. Deal with it and grow up.
double concerto pour basson en la "m' bada"
Thanks, MM. I really liked that!
what's next - the macarena on a sackbut?
She's even done vocals on Schoolhouse Rock!
I confess ... I watched the clip without reading your accompaning blurb ... sincere apologies to you and Essra ...
Hey, I needed some tunes stat tonight! Who cares about silly reading?
:)
...with Essra Mohawk around 1973, when a friend played her first album for me. Her voice was beautiful and so was she.
Not mentioned here in the summary of her career is the fact that when Essra was 19 or 20, Frank Zappa saw her perform and invited her to join the Mothers of Invention. And she accepted.
great stuff .
Has any one heard of Karen Lawernce and blue by nature ? , there is only one vid ( on youtube ) yet I have 4 of her cds , she and the band rocks ( oh wait im over 60 what the hell do i know ) , really rocks .
And how about a little Jane Monheit ( the next Ella ) , or " My last regret " Robert Cray , or , or to many to list . Wish I knew how to do the link thingy , old age is old age .

but I can see why others make her songs popular, her voice is n'tgoing to make the hits. I'm not saying she is a bad singer, just that her voice isn't top 40 voice. I think I'd be happy if I could write others hits myself.
