Late Nite Music Club with Dar Williams

Title: The Christians and the Pagans

So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table

Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able

And where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning

Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans

Only pumpkin pies are burning.

The delightful Dar Williams wrote this instant holiday classic for her 1996 album, "Mortal City." How can you not love the story of lesbian pagans having Christmas dinner with Christian relatives? (There's an implied subtext that Amber is estranged from her family, which is why she's visiting her uncle instead of her father.)

Dar was raised in Chappaqua, NY, and spent 10 years living in Northampton, MA, where she began to make the rounds of the coffeehouse circuit. Joan Baez was an early fan. She took Dar on tour with her and recorded several of her songs.

This is one of the Best Holiday Songs Ever. It actually makes me cry if I hear it in a tender mood.

Many thanks for this great tune. I have some pagan and christian friends that are going to love it as well.

I am pretty sure it was Dar Williams (just confirmed it online) that I saw in concert with my wife a couple of years ago and to be really honest, it was very painful, after about five songs I couldn't take anymore and went out into the lobby. I found her songs to be really mediocre and average at best and this video just reinforced that memory. It is really hard to get up onstage with just an acoustic guitar and your voice with your original songs and hold an audience. For me, she just didn't do it at all.

If you don't like someone singing with just an acoustic guitar, chances are you aren't going to like Dar or any folk singer much. I saw her live and it was one of the best concerts ever. For one thing its nice to hear someone who can actually sing, hit notes in tune, but besides the basics I really love her songs.

...so appropriate for the holidays, given all the Pagan symbolism that makes up most people's Christmas traditions.

Susie, why do you think Amber and Jane are lesbians? There's nothing in the lyrics to suggest that, and Dar has said she's straight, so I'm wondering why you think so.
