C&L's Late Nite Music Club with REM and friends

Bertis Downs is an old friend of mine; he's also R.E.M.'s manager and a Crooks and Liars LNMC fan. He sent me a cool, FUN video last week. The backstory is here. And the contest is for an autographed copy of Peter Clothier's fantastic new book, The Real Bush Diaries. I'll give 3 books away for the best list of R.E.M. covers-- in other words, your favorite R.E.M. songs performed by other artists. Entries to downwithtyranny@aol.com

Late Night Music Club with John Wesley Harding

When I was general manager of Sire Records, Seymour Stein used to sign most of the acts. He's such a crazy and eclectic kind of guy that he almost always brought in unique and interesting artists. Although some were or became huge stars-- Madonna, Depeche Mode, Barenaked Ladies, Brian Wilson, Lou Reed, The Ramones-- others didn't achieve stardom but were just as likely to create fascinating songs. One singer-songwriter who I always championed was U.K. folksinger John Wesley Harding. I was always trying to think of ways to break him to a larger audience. (Nothing worked.) Once I came up with the idea of putting out a special Christmas EP, God Made Me Do It with a couple of songs from his debut album plus an interview and 2 exclusive songs, a Christmas tune, "Talking Christmas Goodwill Blues" and a cover of the then-mega-hit Madonna song "Like A Prayer." At the same time Wes came out with a folk version of Madonna's song, Bi-God 20, our industrial German band did their own, much darker version of the song. I'm happy to report that Wes, long gone from Sire, is still putting out brilliant records, still performing live, writing books and blogging.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Mussorgsky

One of my favorite writers of all times is Dostoevsky and everyone always used to tell me that to love Dostoevsky's books automatically meant I would love Mussorgsky's music as well. It took me a long time but I eventually at least understood what they meant. They are both Russian nationalists whose work examines-- brilliantly examines-- people who might be termed "roadkill" in contemporary art. Mussorgsky died at 42 years old (in 1881), the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition being one of his last great works-- and his most famous. It is literally a "Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann," a celebration in 10 piano pieces of his friend's paintings, Hartmann having died the year before it was composed, 1873. This is the last of the ten pieces, "The Great Gate of Kiev."

Political Science from 1972. What was so snarky then seems prescient now.
