Radiohead Drummer to Release Solo Effort

Title: 7 Worlds Collide

Like many drummers before him (Don Heneley, Phil Collins, Peter Criss), Radiohead drummer Phil Selway is releasing a solo album.

NME:

Selway, who sings on the album, is currently in the process of recording the as-yet untitled record in his band's Oxfordshire studio.

He enlisted the services of Wilco members Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone to play on the project, and multi-instrumentalist solo artist Lisa Germano and bass player Sebastian Steinberg have also contributed.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has a single coming out on limited 12" vinyl later this month.

Kerouac-Inspired Songs from Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar

There's been a dearth of good book-inspired rock of late, other than Mastodon's Leviathan which was back in 2004. Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt) and Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service) hope to change that with a Jack Kerouac-inspired collaboration.

Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Son Volt's Jay Farrar are collaborating on a side-project inspired by '50s Beat writer Jack Kerouac.

The pair met while recording songs for an upcoming Kerouac documentary, One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur, which examines the writer's life in the years after he published On the Road, the dizzying, drug-fueled novel that announced him as the voice of a generation.

I'm still holding out for an Uncle Tupelo reunion, but given the animosity between Farrar and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, I'm not holding my breath. I'll pretend a collaboration with Gibbard about a writer I never really got into will suffice!

I was listening to Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot a lot during the late summer of 2001. What songs got you through that terrible time?

And while times are tough, we sure do appreciate the support you give this blog. Please consider a five dollar or more (if you have it) contribution to Crooks and Liars during our Fall Fundraiser. And thank you.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Wilco

(guest blogged by Howie Klein) John asked me to review SKY BLUE SKY, the just-released Wilco album, before I shuffle off to DC in the morning. I've been listening to it non-stop all day. [Disclaimer: I'm a huge Wilco fan and their songs dominate my iPod, right up there with Dylan, Neil Young, Green Day, Doves, Tim Buckley, Joni Mitchell and Steve Earle.] Oh, man... do I love this album! It's not a raucous and rocked out party album. It's introspective and it's power is in Jeff Tweedy's intensely personal song-writing. It takes more than one listen to really get it but once you do... you have a genyuine long-lasting treasure. Here's "What Light" from the album.

We have an ad on the site for Wilco's new record...
