C&L's Late Night Music Club with Phillip Morris

Title: Mr. Morris

Phillip Morris is another talented Chicago rapper who is on the verge of becoming ridiculously successful.

Take a few minutes, give him a listen, and tell your friends one day: "Morris? Sheee. I knew him back in the 'Instrumentality' days. Dude still owes me money." (h/t Matthew Filipowicz for passing me the Phillip Morris digit.)

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Ryan Shaw

(Guest blogged by SteveAudio)

Working in and around recording studios has some advantages. I often get to hear exciting new music long before it hits the streets. Such was the case when the last studio at which I was on staff was finishing the cd that became "The Love Below".

But my latest new discovery happened the old fashioned way: I heard what sounded like some fine old-school soul music on the radio, reminiscent of Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, and even Marvin Gaye. And then I found out it was this young man, Ryan Shaw:

This 26-year-old singer/songwriter from Decatur, Georgia is out to revive the passion and soul of the Golden Age of Rhythm & Blues (1960-1972) for a new generation. His One Haven/Columbia debut album, This Is Ryan Shaw, combines a powerfully expressive voice with a clutch of great songs both classic and new—and a state-of-the-art, in-your-face sound that makes it impossible to sit still.

Lots to see and hear at his website, go check him out. Here's his Electronic Press Kit and a live camcorder video of Over and Done:

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Amy Winehouse

As requested by C&Ler Miss Kitty, Amy Winehouse won Best Female Solo Artist this week at the Brit Awards.

Rehab

Between this request and Nonny's post last week, I realized just how much new music I don't hear on the radio any more. Your challenge tonight--if you choose to accept it--is to post links to the best new artists and songs that you don't think enough people have heard of.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with MC-5

Kick Out The Jams!

Wikie: MC5 was a protopunk band that came out of Detroit, USA in 1964, and was an important precursor of and influence on punk rock (see protopunk and List of forerunners of punk music). It featured Wayne Kramer (guitar), Michael Davis (bass), Rob Tyner (vocals), Dennis Thompson (drums) and Fred "Sonic" Smith (guitar). The MC5 described their music as "New Music" and cited the Yardbirds and The Who as the leaders of the New Sound...read on

I've jammed with Wayne Kramer (guitar) and he's a terrific musician.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Bismillah Khan

(guest blogged by Howie Klein)

Bismillah Khan is the world's greatest shenai player. I've loved his classical Indian music since someone turned me on to him when I was a student in the 60's. Later, when I was a radio dj, I tried turning a mass audience on to his music; it didn't work. Most people found it too... foreign. All the pieces I have by him are over 10 minutes long but today I found a 3 minute extract from "Rag Multani" that I hope opens up a new musical vista for someone in the Music Club.

We don't have any Bismillah Khan CDs to give away as prizes tonight but I remember whenever I used to play his music on KSAN people used to call up and request ELO songs. So tonight's C&L Late Night Music Club prize are 3 copies of the new expanded version of ELO II (so not just "Roll Over Beethoven" and the classics but also 4 new bonus tracks to boot). Just put together a playlist of the 10 best late night listening songs you know and the 3 coolest get the ELO. Send 'em to downwithtyranny@aol.com.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Hubert Laws

Laws is possibly the finest jazz flute player of all time. I know that's a very subjective opinion, but listen to "Moment's Notice" and tell me what you think.

I met him at the '03 National Flute Association's Convention and saw him play live for a mostly classical crowd filled with the best of the best. He left them all shaking their heads in admiration.

Here's his website. There's some new music available.

Amazon has all his records.
